Wire stripping machines

Does anyone scrap their wire and strip it first. I have always scrapped my wire and for the big stuff, I will hand strip it. As far as romex, I will send it in unstripped. I have been looking at some stripping machines, EBAY is flooded with them, some of the prices seem to good to be true.

I defiantly want one with a motor instead of using a drill. I have read good reviews about the "Stripmiester" They are a lot more than the ones on ebay.

I was looking at the E250 it will strip 18 up to 250mcm and will also remove the outer jacket from romex. It has a 1/4 hp variable speed DC motor on it. And made in North America. The price is $ 449.00 though, plus another $ 36.00 for shipping. It will pay for it self after 2 or 3 times of me turning in scrap

Does anyone have any experience with any stripping machines

A couple of the big wire manufacturers, Encore and Southwire have scrap programs. They dont require it to be stripped at all because they've got huge machines that do it. Some electrical supply houses participate in these programs.
It's not a hugely successful program though. Supply houses dont want to be in the scrap business. In my area, the electricians sell their wire to the wire gypsys who are always lurking around.

We have a lot of scrap yards around that buy it. It is $ 1.00 or more per pound with it stripped

You can select edit, then go advanced and then edit the title. But it wont change on each subsequent comment.

For the other comments, you would have to ask each commentor or an admin to do it

I got a bud that does it. Not sure where he seems to get an endless supply but if he is standing around bulls hitting he is stripping with a common razor knife. I should look at the method, he is really zippy.

For the heavy cable I used to lay it out and run down the center of it with a circular saw. Then just peel off the casing. I've done smaller cable with a utility knife, but that takes a bit of feel because it's easy to dig into the copper. The technique is like pealing an apple or potato. Goes very quick once you get the hang of it.

Started saving scraps when copper spiked 10 or so years ago. I have a half full file sized box of clean and stripped. On a small scale, doesn't seem to be worth the time when you factor in peeling, stripping, and taking it in.

IMHO, The answer depends on how much wire do you want to strip and the price differential between stripped and unstripped wire.

I found with home THHN wire if you whack it with a hammer it will split the insulation and it comes right off. I imagine if you ran it through rollers with enough pressure, you could do the same thing.

I know someone who made a machine like that. Used the rotors from a couple scrap motors as the rollers. Not sure how or if it was powered. Adjustable gap between the rollers.
