Made a Zyklop palm ratchet today

I picked up a replacement 1/4" Zyklop ratchet head for ~20 bucks from KC Tool, 3d printed a prototype knob, and I've got a decent palm ratchet now. I need to iterate the design to include the angle adjustment, and it spins in place right now with not much torque. With the Zyklop at 80 dollars, this seems like a great deal. STL and SLDPRT files available if anyone is interested.

sincere apologies. i just realized that you did indeed share pics. i thought to try to check after i posted my last message.

i discovered that you did share pics by quoting the OP.

this revealed IMG tags attempting to embed images hosted on imgur.

unfortunately, imgur has configured their infrastructure to specifically target the garage journal so that images can't be hotlinked here.

if the images are already in your browser's cache (perhaps this is the case for caltemus), they will probably appear without issue.

here are links to his images:

i think that this is a big problem here at TGJ. many users are unaware of the issue. i wish the staff would address it somehow so that people don't keep trying to embed imgur images.

I've not had that issue on a vbulletin site before. I've updated the original post with images. I still need to iterate to include the pivot and locking mechanism from the stock zyklop. I've also got an idea to incorporate the gimball that's seen on the gearwrench 81027 and all it's clones. Long term this is really developing a pattern for something I can cast out of aluminium.

Take the "S" out of "https" your hyperlink.
Done. Most sites really should be https these days, but your browser will probably end up there anyway.

Neat. Just out of curiosity, how did you attach the ratchet to the 3D printed knob? Is it bolted together?

Right now it's just pressed into the void in the plastic I made for it. The ratchet head is spherical, so I had to press it in. The next step is to add bolt holes, but I wanted to print what I had designed to confirm its geometry before designing any more.

I hate to spring it on you - I love Zyklop ratchets, but - you just skipped the good part of a zyklop and kept the bad part...

The best part of the ratchet is the handle and rotating head features. In my opinion the selector switch looks nice but hard to use.

Jmonnty, that's hilarious! i'm a little surprised that works.
when you use http, the redirect process to https seems to break the referer, so imgur doesn't realize it's a link from (or a hotlink in) garage journal.

here's a demo of hotlinking from imgur:

Imgur doesn’t specifically target us. They don’t allow hot linking from any site with a classified section.

Made some more progress, vectorized a picture of the stock yoke from their marketing, and got that modeled.

Plenty of room in the body of the part for the angle locking mechanism. I've always been partial to the armstrong/matco style of flex lock lever, so I think I'll try and replicate/draw from that. Side note, as sad as it was to see armstrong go, I remember it taking me 3 tries to get a decent chrome finish on one of their 1/4" locking flex heads. American QC is not what it used to be.

Got the pivot screws modeled too, T15 with a major diameter of 6mm on the threads. I'll check em with a thread tester tomorrow. The rebuild kit came with conical springs to set the pivot preload/friction. Here's the counterbored holes added to the palm knob:

The printed yokes have a few dimensional issues, and I'm having a hard time determining the thread pitch if the screws. It's finer than M6x1 or M6x0.75, but too small to be 1/4-32. I'd guess M6x0.5 but I haven't seen that, and my metric thread checker does not include it.

Did some more work on the palm spinner today. Split it in half, added dowel pins and brass expanding thread inserts, and some features to index the ratchet head. I'm moving away from the factory screws without a way to cut the threads. It'll be held together by cyanoacrilate glue and M4 screws. I also cut the height down, as the boss surrounding the 1/4" square was leftover from my knob design that I started with.

It's a first draft so the edges don't all line up perfectly in the preview.

Basically done with the palm spinner part of this project. I refined the previous additions, and adjusted some things to print better and without as much support. I'm happy with the final tool. I went with only one tooth on each side, and I've omitted the dowels and glue as it's plenty sturdy without them. The ID might be a touch on the small side, hence the gap formed between the halves where the brass insert is visible.

I'll update this post with the .STL and McMaster part numbers for the hardware in the next few days. Gotta find a good way to upload an STL to this forum. I might make some plugs to hide the screws, but as it stands I already prefer it to my gearwrench 1/4" drive gimball ratchet.
