I completely understand, I am also at the point that I want my DD to be quiet and comfortable. Hell, I have enough sound deadening in my Z28 to barely hear my exhaust with headers and a cat back system. Ha Ha

Yup the DD car needs to be as quiet as possible, it’s my stealthy little hot rod all blacked out with some Chrome and Aluminum.

NOW the toys and weekend truck? I could or have put Flowmasters on them with no fks given.

That's where I'm at, I don't mind hearing a faint exhaust note at cruise...and I mean FAINT...but under no circumstances can I handle drone!

Science wins!

I dug in the exhaust pipe stash, which is a giant tote full of bends and left over pieces from decades worth of projects. Currently running a Helmholtz Resonator(j-pipe) @ approximately 26.875" and the exhaust is 85% better...good enough I'm not really worried about it anymore.

So now I've got a spare muffler on the shelf. Let's be honest, I'll have it put on something else in 3-6mo. Glad I get to keep my straight through muffler @ zero loss CFM flow!

Black95Z28, thanks for the feedback!!!!

Please provide derivations of mathematical equations and relevant physics for the length and cross sectional area of the resonator chamber in relation to the rest of the exhaust system, thanks.

I lost my notes....my, uh, dog ate my homework?:headscrat

Totally cheated on this one, there are plenty of charts out there on the interwebs with the RPM drone value vs. length.

The center console in the 'Burb is fairly useless. I call it a torpedo. Considered using an 04-08 Ford F150 setup, but it was too wide and wedges between the seats. Ended up finding a nice GMT800 (99-06) setup. Cup holders are 100% better on this setup.

The other day it arrived and I blew it apart and started the cleanup process.

Spent a little time on the GMT800 console last night. Everything is painted/dyed to the correct interior color. Also finished the blank and installed the power ports and pigtails for the wiring.

I'm interested to see how you make this all work, if you don't mind posting some details I'd like to see it. I have my grandfathers 96 that lacks much usefulness in the console as well. I could convince myself to change it up if it was reversible.

Good idea, I plan to do similar to my 96 F150s Center console. Always nicer to have charging ports further back than just the darned cigarette lighter! Lol

Anything to help keep the kiddos happy and quiet on a long trip!

So after setting the console in, and modifying the mount bracket it came with, I wasn't happy with the fit, so I did some trimming on it and decided to make my own brackets and scrap "Plan A."

And JB, this is all reversible back to factory!

Also, once I had it in the 'burb, the color match was 1 shade too light. I ended up ordering some SEM Color Match in Medium Neutral, which should be the "Correct" color.

Paint comes in tomorrow, so I'll get it scuffed and resprayed and I'll snap some pics of it going back in. I still need to pull a fused power wire to the harness, I'll probably tie onto one that is only hot with ignition since the USB port has an LED light built in.

Also took an eraser wheel this weekend and knocked the black pinstripe off the side...just to put a red one back on. Red is more often than not the color I use, especially on white vehicles...and I'm a pinstripe guy, some hate them, but I think they dress up the body lines better.

I like it, good match on color as well. On the back brackets, do they bolt to the console, or just used to wedge it down?

Great job Marc. That turned out fantastic.

Thanks Mike

It's nice to have two functional cup holders in the console. The one's that come out of the dash are just begging for trouble!

It will also make longer trips with the kiddos easier when they need to charge a device.

Yes, you'll love those USB ports. I added a double USB port on the passenger side of my shifter console in the Jeep, right next to the wife's left leg area and we use it all the time even though there's a cigarette style port just above it.

I originally intended to use the USB port for my Samsung tablet that I mount on my dash with Back Country Navigator app for off-roading but my wife uses it much more than I do for her phone.

Great job on the console, making it much more functional. Did similar mods on my '89 Burb , only moved it forward to put a TV/VCR combo behind it for the boys to watch when we traveled back to Nebraska. Have you thought of spraying the inside with foam to turn it into a cooler for cold drinks on the road?

Thanks Ric. I have it packed full of all my necessary stuff, no room for drinks. We generally carry a cooler of water and stuff to snack on when we go.

But, that is a great idea!

Yeah, Just kidding. Trudi actually thought that one up when we bought the 'Burb. Mine has a fire extinguisher, multi-tool, safety tool, tow strap, trailer plug adapters, flashlight and batteries, TP, kleenex, fuses, spare bulbs, and still plenty of room for daily stuff; mainly stuff for hauling a car trailer and at a race track.

Hey mate just finished reading through the whole thread! took me 3 nights! =)

Love everything your doing. That shop truck is awesome. You really kicked it out the park and in record time too. I have always been a fan of a nicely patina'd original exterior but with a crisp fresh brand new interior and specifically engine bay.

My dream car (apart from finishing the zed one day) would be to import a 68-74 nova. Nice patina on the outside, fat Weld Draglite's or Centerline convo pro's on it. A mint interior and a show quality engine bay with tucked wire harness, engine bay repainted pristine in body colour.

So yeah, really digging the shop truck.

Actually i really liked that other GMC you had, said you bought it from a dealership, the GMC Sierra? You fixed a few things but then on sold it. That looked pretty sweet too!

Loving the workshop progress. great having a hoist in there finally right? I was planning on putting one in my shed at Dad's place before the wife and i bought our home, don't think that's gonna happen now though.

so what work is done to the Z28? you mentioned it was running around 500hp at the wheels? It kinda looked like you had a LS in there?

Rudi.

Rudi, I appreciate you stopping by to read through! Thanks for the kind words!

I also really like Nova's, I'd like a 68-70 built about the same...mine would have Chevy car rallies or plain steel wheels painted white with dog dish hubcaps.

The 49' GMC is a fun driver, draws attention wherever you drive it, and it has that perfect 60's hotrod/muscle car sound.

The hoist was a game changer for sure. It was a welcome addition to the shop even if it does eat up a lot of floor space.

The Z28 I've owned for 20 years. I did the LS swap about 9 years ago, at that time I swapped the gear box from a 700R4 auto to a T56 manual. It is actually 425rwhp, with a conservative drivetrain loss, probably around 515-525hp at the flywheel. But at around 3500lbs or so, it moves right along. Its a 6.0L (LQ9) based block with a 230/232 duration .585/.595 lift cam and the LS6 car intake filled with 41.5lb/hr injectors. The torque curve is awesome, nice and flat from around 2500rpm until about 5200 or so, rev limiter is set at 7000rpm, but I shift at 6500-6600. Its still on stock paint and interior, but is needing a repaint someday.

Thanks again for stopping by, I've enjoyed getting caught up on your Zed project!

So at around 500 hp, can the Z28 hook 1st or even 2nd gear? What tires do you run? What is rear gear ratio?
I found drag radials necessary around that power level.
Sounds like a really fun car, wish I could take it for a spin

Justin, it's still on stock size 245/50R16 tires. They are Kuhmo Ecsta's...nice soft compound and do well in the rain. 3.92 gears in the Dana 44 out back, 1st is worthless, 2nd is laughable, 3rd is when you start reeling them in. Hawk's Motorsports (formerly Hawks Thirdgen) is supposed to be releasing a 17x9 factory replica of my wheel, when that happens it will get reshod in a proper tire. Tire choices are very limited in the stock size, and even 255 plus sizing. I've always wanted to run a drag radial, but the amount of rain we get in this part of Kansas, make that a bit risky. :shocking:

It would be fun to have you over for a beer and tire bbq. Next time I visit my sister in Mesa, I need to stop by and meet a couple of you AZ fellas. My nephew is currently building an LS swapped YJ, I wish I was there to help.

Installed the new tuned ECU in the 'Burb last week. Then I headed up North to spend some time with my sisters. Took a 12' enclosed tandem axle trailer to bring some stuff home with me, and cart some things to Goodwill for the sister that lives up there. I'm pleased to report that on the way up there the Suburban made 10.898mpg running 71mph on I29. This is very close to my daily average since I picked it up, the tune has definitely unlocked some potential.

I've forgotten what it's like to tow with a big block, the 'burb didn't even know that trailer was back there, loaded or otherwise. Coming home I had a 30-40mph cross/headwind and it was 98* with tons of humidity. With the AC on, the engine never got over 204.8* and the ****** stayed at 185* or less. Pleased with this performance to say the least! (I haven't run the mpg #'s on the return trip yet, with the wind I expect single digits)

In the return trip, the trailer housed some stuff from mom's Oregon log cabin, that haven't been used since the cabin's sale 6-7 years ago. Most notably a free standing hammock and a Bombardier Traxter Max 4-wheeler. Neither sister has use for the 4-wheeler, so they suggested I bring it home for my crew.

With a new battery and some coaxing, I got it started and loaded. Once home, I drained the old fuel(about 4gal), put in some new plugs, washed it all down, and have prepared it for an oil change. I wasn't familiar with this type of 4-wheeler, only that they had purchased it because it was easy for my mother to get on and off of it with the pass through in the front. They are a love it or hate it design, but are basically a tractor as far as utility. I'll get some pics up in the next day or so.

In other news the blower fan for the outdoor unit on the HVAC decided to malfunction over the weekend. It must have got hot because it threw the breaker. After trying a few things to find an "issue" I gave up and just worked in the heat (1st world problems, right?). I've got power to the unit, and everything else works, just won't kick the fan on outside...SO I put in an SOS to the company that installed it(it's less than 3 years old, so maybe has some warranty left) and they are coming sometime Wednesday to hopefully diagnose or fix. Could be as simple as a capacitor, or perhaps the motor is shot.

Last but not least, I put a new ignition control module in daughter number 2's pickup. She had let someone else work on it without me knowing, and they had done the same job a week ago...forgot to cover the bottom of the ICM in heat sink paste, and left one of the screws loose....I wonder why it failed?!

Glad the trip was uneventful for you, that doesn't sound too bad at all for a loaded trip in a BB.

For the motor, mine went out last year and after bypassing the capacitor determined the motor was bad, luckily found a new one at the HVAC shop and was back in business for under $100.

AC is fixed, had some wires come loose in the outdoor unit and they shorted out. It's nice to have dry cool air again!

Changed the engine oil in the Suburban last night, I run full synthetic or semi-syn Castrol brand stuff in my vehicles. Keeps the engines lubricated and clean, and their oils are generally on the heavier side of the weight system. 6.5qts and a Wix filter on the 'burb. Took the opportunity while it was on the lift to fix small exhaust leak, and vacuumed out the interior for my sanity.

Checked the coolant in the Traxter, it tests out properly and looks to be fresh and clean. Must have been changed shortly before it was moth-balled. I plan to service the engine oil in it tonight, then it's ready to ride and work. Tires are looking thin, I may have to replace them sooner rather than later.

Glad you got the AC fixed and it wasn't anything too serious.

That's also a clean looking quad Marc.

As for mileage my BB Suburban was only getting about 10-11 empty. Loaded with my race trailer I was usually around 8-9 MPG. It was a square body though and lifted a few inches.

Yes, the AC is a must during our Eastern KS summers! I'll take 95 and arid over 90 and humid any day!

Thanks, the Traxter was cared for fairly well. It will serve utility purposes around here well. Now I just need an LS swapped Jeep to go with it!

Final numbers on the return trip with the high winds was 9.51mpg. I'm still pleased with that. I hope my wife doesn't let me sell this one if I ever get the itch...I've asked her to hold me to it! :lol_hitti

Popped the 2" spacers on the 'burb Friday night, probably could have gone another 1/2" on each side, but is far better than it was!

Had some time to build brackets for my fogs on the diesel bumper, and put everything on. I'm still waiting on some electrical parts to do the wiring, but all the hard parts are installed. Probably should have done the bumper with the impact strip, but the smoothie is growing on me.

Finished the oil change on the Traxter only to have the starter die on me. Did some troubleshooting, cleaned all the connections, pulled out the multi-meter, and banged on it with a BFH (only thing that partially worked). Easy enough to swap it out, just would have been better to do before the oil change I have a feeling.

Well Saturday I had it in my mind I was going to conquer the world, one project at a time.

- We all know how that goes!

Started out in the shop, and built the front half of my fog light harness. I'm disappointed I didn't get any pictures, it's one of the cleanest I've built! Went to start in on running wires from the dash to the relays under the hood, and realized all too late I didn't have the correct dash blank to add in both factory switches...and then my second hand soldering gun, that I've had for a very long time...died. It was free, and used, and was used for many projects...I think I got the goodie out of it.

So I licked my wounds, cleaned up my shop, reassembled the dash and went on to trimming trees. I had already knocked this out once this Spring, but after the leaves showed up, I had more branches hanging down and invading my personal space while mowing. Out came the chainsaw, I made noise, and wood chips, and 5 garden trailer loads of branches.

At this point I realized how humid it was, temps were more favorable in the low 80s, but the humidity from the previous day's rains was off the charts. Having leaked enough work/perspiration into my clothing, I chose a shady spot with some H20...which lead to me doing nothing the rest of the day and switching to ice cold beer at one point.

Yesterday was pretty laid back, wife and kids took me out for lunch, and made me a special meal last night. I even got a nap in the afternoon!
