Sandblaster metering valve adjustment

After owning the Harbor freight sand blast cabinet for 5 years, my daughter has motivated me to put it together with decent parts. So, I picked up the bottom feed metering valve for the sand feed. The simple one with a ****** on it for an air bleed (I bought mine on Ebay). I can't figure out the adjustment on it. No matter how I had the set screw threaded in didn't seem to effect the feed or lack of feed. I could try to start blasting, some sand come out, hold my hand against the nozzle and burp air thru the line, then back to blasting.

Try running it as lean as possible on the metering valve which is the screw all the way out or even completely removed. If it's the stock gun you will probably need around 60-80 psi for decent results. If it's working there adjust the screw in to make it more rich(more abrasive) until you find your happy medium. The problem seems to be mostly with the stock gun and lack of vacuum at lower pressures. Assuming you have a big enough compressor/dry air/clean media already.

Do you have another gun to recommend?

The only thing that is still harbor freight is the cabinet. I put a TP Tools gun and foot pedal, along with their **** dust collector. Compressor is an 80gal with a filter at the compressor and another at the cabinet. The only other thing I’m thinking about now is that I’ve only tried running it at 80psi.

I’ve been using a pot blaster at 80psi with decent results, which made me think it would be a good ballpark.

I run mine at 40 psi with very good results and the ability to dial in the metering valve.

One of the main benefits of the metering valves is the ability to run lower pressure with very little media actually in the blaster cabinet.

I used an old inch ball valve. Made all the stuff. I like it better than the ready made. I put 3 ft wand, made nozzles from 1/8 xxh pipe ******* and the fill plug is a Ford radius arm grommet.

I would try anywhere from 25-45psi to get your desired results using what I mentioned above starting with full lean. And like he said run your media skinny (1-4 cups of media) that way it's easy to screen it when it gets dirty/cheap to replace it once it's spent.
