todays haul... a machinist vice!

I was out huntin and pickin and I found this machinist vice that is 3.6415" wide

I don't know anything about it, but it's got two axis adjustment in 0.01" increments.

The only thing bad about it is it's missing the axis control knobs and one of the axises only works in one direction. the vice moves freely in that direction, but the control screws only effect it in one direction.

I was wondering if any of you had any info on it, and an appraisal of some sort would be helpful. I'm just starting to get into the tool pickin hobby and I have a lot to learn. I hope this was a good one!

That is a machinist's vise in name only. Yours looks one notch better than the one I had for a short time. It made me mad every time I tried to use it, so down the road it went.

It's a not-too-uncommon Chinese-manufactured cross slide drill press vise - they're sold by various importers and tool dealers under a variety of names. You can generally find them new for $50 - $60 if you shop around.

Yep. Harbor freight special. Better than nothing if you have a cheap drill press... but not by much.

not a machinist vise
its an X-Y cross slide vise
it is intended for use on a drill press so you can clamp something in and center onto the point you want to drill the hole
it is not meant for milling operations (not heavy enough) but could be used for very light milling if you are carefull

My crappy POS vise ... uh, I mean, my excellent machinist's vise, was also missing one handle. Go to Rockler hardware, buy one of their wooden wheels (for making toys) and epoxy it in place. A fix that's appropriate to the quality of the vise.

Kidding aside, it actually works fine for engine turning. You know what engine turning is? AKA Jeweling, Damascening, Krayling, Snailing, or Guilloche?

But follow rsanter's advice, do NOT use on a milling machine!

Got one too. I keep it wing nutted to my drill press table. Worth its weight when needing to quickly get a drill on a mark. Not a bad find. Not a "you ****" find though.

I got it for $10 so I don't feel like I got screwed on it.

Maybe I'll attach it to my drill press just for shits and giggles.

Good rule of thumb, if it says made in China on it then it is probably not the greatest Still if you did not pay much for it then use it and enjoy.

Yeah. A $10 mistake that still isn't even that much of a mistake. It's a neat little unit for my shop!
