Door Opener Reversing Sensor— Ideas for Protecting or Improving ?

I’m in the process of installing three Chamberlain RJ020 openers (about the same as Liftmaster 8500) and the included safety sensors are effective but they are really likely to get destroyed because of the mounting method and location.
I’m looking for ideas for a way to protect them OR to replace them with something more compact and/or less fragile. Are there other sensors that can be mounted say, through the wood framing, just outside the door,

rather than inside of the door rails? Less obtrusive is the goal. All ideas are welcome.

I have the same sensors on my garage door. With items that get stored alongside the rails, they can sometimes knock the sensor out of alignment.

My goal is to built some protection around them. Maybe a 12 inch length of 8 inch pipe sliced vertically and then with a foot of some sort welded on the base. This would then be secured to the floor.

But that has been my goal for two years now. I am just careful with moving the stuff now so I don’t knock it out of position.

I've had those sensors for maybe half a century, on one house or another, and although I have knocked one loose occasionally, their biggest enemy has been spiders. They put out webs, that catch little leaves and debris, that wave in front of the sensor, and then the door won't close.

My niece has 6 kids and when I put her door and opener on I knew the sensors had a 100% chance of continual whacks. Took my welder and gabbed up some brackets to surround them and bolted them to the wood frame of the door opening. Also painted them flouresent orange to make them noticeable

Interesting ideas and link(!).
I finally got all three door openers fully operational except that I’ve not yet tried to do anything with the networking devices. As soon as I take the time to run the cat5e out there to mount the access point, then I’ll set these up as well as my cameras etc.
right now I’m just thrilled to be able to push a local button, and enjoy not having to hoist up doors!

I'm pretty close to removing mine coiling up the wires, taping them together and then setting them on top of the motor. I've tried but I can not think of a single time in my entire life where I was relieved they stopped the door from closing on something. I can't do it, not one single time in my entire life has my reaction to them stopping a garage door been anything but annoyance and expletives.

I’ve shared the same thought process but toddlers.... either my own or, (now) theirs. That’s the reason I can’t

I did this years ago...no small dogs, nuns, babys or vehicles have been hurt since.
