So it's a normal garage door with the track mounted on the outside? Is this just to have the extra ceiling room and lighting ability on the inside?

Yes, and the tracks fold in. The main reason is the lift. However it makes a great canopy for when shade is needed or to get out of the rain when the shop is full.

got any more info to share on these? cant find anything via google...

I've also gotten rid of all outward swinging doors. A workshop on one of my farms (built in 1920s in OH) originally had two sets of outward swinging doors. The were OK until you had a snowfall ... then when you tired to open the doors they "bulldozed" the snow in front of the doors and became a major pain to open.

Another door on another building had the same snow problem, but, in addition, it had very low ground clearance so even if there was no snow on the ground, in the dead of winter the ground would freeze and heave; thus, prohibiting the door from swinging open. When that happened, it was IMPOSSIBLE to open that door until spring.

Here are the "before" and "after" pics of the old workshop. I tried to select a single overhead door design that was as close as possible in appearance to the original double set of swinging doors ... sadly, not many options available.
