In the summer of 2014 I replaced my existing House Garage Door Openers with Liftmaster 8500's. I have been extremely pleased with them.

This past week I was opening the Garage Door that probably gets used the most and heard a "Ping!" and the sound of something hitting the floor.

I climbed a ladder and had a look at the Motor. There was a Machine Screw missing (White Arrow) from the Collar. I later found the Machine Screw on the floor.

I did a search for the Collar and found that the original (Part # 41A6388) seems to have been replaced with Part # 041D8615.

I ordered that part and it arrived yesterday.

The manual that came with the opener when it was installed 6 years ago called for the Machine Screws in the original Collar to be torqued to 12-14 Ft-lbs. I'm guessing that most installers aren't aware of that specification and my Machine Screw was over-torqued a bit which may have resulted in this failure.

Anyway, the Collar was redesigned for some reason and it looks like over-torqueing the new bolts will be harder to do.

Anyone else experience a collar failure like this?

Probably would have been better with a through bolt anyways with that first design. Out of curiosity what size door do you have?

purediesel,

Assuming "side" was supposed to be "size"...

9-feet wide x 7-feet tall for the failed Collar's Door.

Two similar doors flank this door with the 8500's driving them as well.

I also have the same opener on my Shop Building's (Lone Beech Garage) 4 much larger garage doors.

Best regards,

Scott

Yup, fixed it. I got quoted this opener for a 16x14 and I think it's too small for it.

That new collar comes standard with the newer model (8500W) that was released in 2019. BTW, I don't know about the older 8500, but the 8500W instructions state there should be a minimum of 1/4" between the collar and the bearing/bracket.

Cheers,

purediesel,

I don't have anything that big but I have a couple in the Lone Beech Garage that are pretty good size. My 2 largest doors are 12' wide & 14' tall. I was startled when the Garage Door people specified the Liftmaster 8500 for those doors. When I questioned them about that they said they would work fine. They've been doing the job for 4 years.

Your results may vary.

Best regards,

Scott

Garry,

I'd have to look at the Owner's manual but I wouldn't be surprised if that specification wasn't the same . I didn't install them and I will be having that installer do the labor of swapping the collars next week.

Thanks for the head's up.

Best regards,

Scott
