Does your eBay listing have a buy it now price? I think the rules are that you have to have a price.

They don't have a buy it now price, but none of this is specified in the rules.

the rules say you must have a price an auction is not a price you cannot buy an auction item straight up. if you posted a price on here you wanted to get and you would end the auction early if you got it then you would be fine. but posting up auction links is a no no

OK. How about a new rule.
No linking to a ebay auction. It's a classified section, not an ad site for your auctions.

I have to agree that if you want to sell here than try here first and then go to eBay.

I have not seen or deleted your posts, but what people have said here is true. The rules state you must have a price, and an auction does not have a price. If the auction has a BIN, then I leave the listing here alone.

Why not list here first, anyway? Saves you eBay fees at the least.

The classified rules state nothing as far as linking ebay listings.

I would love to think that Garage Journal means more to you than just a place to dump links to your ebay items, especially in the Classifieds section. Its becoming ever popular for New members to soley use this site for there own advertising of tools that are for sale on another venue. I sell alot of stuff via here and ebay and i almost always give GJ members first dibs and sometimes stuff sells and other times i close the classified and list with ebay. I do this because i dont feel its right to use GJ for my own personal listing agency, without benefiting fellow members. The rules might not specify exactly what is kosher with listing Ebay links but common sense should tell you that its wrong for you to park your car in your neighbors driveway with a forsale sign attached.

How about setting a postcount rule for the classified section - say anyone with under 25 posts isn't allowed to sell stuff. That way people don't join up just to post advertisements, AND you know you're dealing with a reputable member (or you know not to deal with the member judging by their post history). Not to say that Conrad is either honorable or dishonorable, but it would cut back on frivolous classified postings.

Good idea. In fact, it's common on many forums.

I mentioned this before. I'd make it higher than 25 posts though.

It seems like every two to three weeks someone just has to have a rule pertaining to post count or no linking. What the hell, let's do it but let's make it a minimum 1500 posts before one can sell on here, let's see how many members still support the minimum count idea.

I propose that you have to have a minimum post count before you can make a suggestion about having a minimum post count to sell in the classifieds.

The classifieds section here really does run smoothly as-is. I see no need for additional regulations at this time.

Wow, sorry for offending you - I thought it might possibly benefit the community seeing as how people were complaining about it. I didn't see anything in the rules about having a minimum post count for offering helpful suggestions :rolleyes2

As Bull said i dont believe there is a problem in the Classifieds other than the occasional vilolation of rules, It just so happens this normally happens with Newer members. Its really not that big of deal and normally it gets remedied fairly quickly.

I agree with that whole-heartedly, but I would put the minimum post count at around 250 or so.

Also, the rule should be that each and every item for sale has A PICTURE OF THE ACTUAL ITEM.

Hey if the current system works, it works! It was just a suggestion like all of the other suggestions in this thread - I'm not offended if it doesn't happen, I don't have anything for sale anyway.

So this thread exploded.

I appreciate all the comments.

I belong to the maxima.org forums. On that forum, you must have 15 posts before you can create ANY thread. They also have a buyer/seller feedback section in case anyone has gotten burned in the past they can post about it. The also have this itrader rating. People that sell lots of stuff have a higher rating. I have a 0 because I never sell anything on there. I linked to my ebay account because people aren't too sure about buying from new members. At least someone could see that I have been a member of ebay for 8 years and have a 100% feedback rating.

I propose modifying the rules to meet what has been discussed in this thread.

Thanks.

I propose you post your tools for sale here, first, to show the GJ community that you are one of them. :)

I second Bull's motion! If everybody who sells tools on ebay decided to join GJ just to post links to their auctions it would be a mess. The rules now are simple and work.If you want to link to your auctions they must have a buy it now, simple.

Well,

Before we became so established. I did post my ebay links in the Classifieds----

But I also offered Garage Journal Members a 10% discount off the final price.

I thought that offering a discount was a fair enough way to give back to the members of the board.

I'm a moderator on another forum. Whilst I can moderate across the board, I tend to focus on the Classifieds and general discussion areas.
The rules we have on classifieds are simple, no postings to auction links either for your own stuff or something that you think someone else might be interested in. Any that do are deleted in fairly swift order.

The significant difference is that it is a 'closed' forum and requires a membership fee to be paid to join. That usually puts off those who only join in order to post a classified ad.
Before anyone jumps down my throat, I am not advocating that GJ starts charging to join, I am merely pointing out a deterrent that seems to work.

Whist I would endorse the suggestion on of a number of posts before being granted thread rights to classifieds, this could be achieved quickly in a number of ways & the poster would not have contributed anything towards the forum. I do think this also puts alot more work on the moderators.

I would suggest a simple 'No links to auction sites or other classifieds sites' rule & enforcement of that irrespective of the number of posts.

I also endorse Bull's proposal that "you post your tools for sale here, first, to show the GJ community that you are one of them"

If the current moderators need a hand, I'm happy to volunter my services for the classifieds section. I've got a lot of information from this site for my build project and would like to give something back by way of my time.
