Gregor, it wouldn't surprise me if your post is removed due to some kind of community guidelines, so before it does, I wanted to say that I appreciate you sharing your story and your thoughts. I've been engaged in some pretty serious debate with friends, family, and many of my coworkers--in a civil and, hopefully, constructive way--but I find I'm just gaining no traction. There is a lot of government, media and, as you correctly point out, algorithms working against the best interest of the country right now, and that's just hard to out-argue, even if the logic is sound.

Very well said.

Being Canadian it is easy to look south and think it is down in the USA, but it is here in Canada also.

I am committing now to stop being silent and speaking my truth to affect change. We all need change to have countries we can be proud to live in.

That was a beautiful post Gregor, thank you.

I'm french and seeing what's happening on the other side of the pond is infuriating and disheartening. Sorry, english ain't my native language, I might not have the right words...

Ready your post is reassuring in the fact that it's a reminder that at least a part of the US population doesn't support the actions of your president.

Thank you again, take care buddy.

I typed up a detailed reply, but I feel that getting too deep down this rabbit hole does a disservice to this great forum, so I will keep it brief.

I appreciate the civil nature of this conversation on what is a very divisive topic. Too often the news is driven by emotion rather than fact, and I think that is widely at play in this current state of affairs. Gregor, I respect your opinions but widely disagree. I think Mike's post was an excellent counterpoint.

The news media is pushing a narrative to obtain a goal (including Fox), and unfortunately we need to dig pretty deep to get actual facts and not just opinions (or a partial set of facts that leave out key points) in this day and age. Listening to both sides and looking at primary sources yourself is pretty critical in my opinion.

I support our leaders, our laws, and our great country. I do not support unequal application of the law to various groups - whether that be truly racist actions by police (when the facts support this conclusion), or violence, vandalism, and destruction of property by "mostly peaceful demonstrators". From what I've looked into there is a lot of garbage reporting going on to craft the current narrative and encourage lawlessness to the detriment of the communities they are purporting to support.

I do think police need to be held to a high standard given their position of authority. I worry that they will be unable to recruit and retain good officers if we continue to villify them as an organization in our society.

I think we all support the police, but we also flash our high beams at on coming cars to warn them when there is a cop hiding around the bend. These protesters (the peaceful ones) are flashing their high beams and we need to slow down and take a look.

Thanks for taking the risk Gregor. Despite being well thought out (per usual) I'm sure the thought, ... do I? or don't I?.. was going through your mind as your hand hovered above the enter key (more probably a finger over the left mouse button). I appreciate it.

Thanks for all of the recent posts with the differing points of view. Living in central Oregon it's a bit isolated from much of this "real world" drama, but that doesn't stop our thoughts and changes we should be making.

As far as the destruction goes, it bothers me to no end, but I also feel that much of that is by folks who do not want to be part of this discussion. Why is it now with a natural disaster or other event people feel the need to hit Best Buy and Nike outlets in the middle of the night for some free swag? It's like clockwork. Here in the PNW, there's groups of anarchists that wait and love this stuff. They come crawling out of the woodwork at any opportunity. This goes back to long before the WTO riots in Seattle. These days there's more folks doing this from all over due to the allowed "divide" being established to push their own extremes and hate.

Now let's get back to painting some machinery...

Thank you for sharing those thoughts Gregor. I started to formulate a reply, but it’s just too much. After pondering it for the last 24, I can’t shorten it, so I’ll just say thank you!

It can be difficult to translate thoughts into words, but you have a knack for it. Well done.

This is a topic that hits close to home (and I mean that literally, I'm only a few blocks from where the recent events all started.)

I appreciate the ability we all share to express our opinions. However, I think President Ronald Reagan said it best in a speech called “A Time for Choosing”.

"Well, the trouble with our liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so.”

Thanks to all for sharing your opinions in a civil discussion. We need the same in our
houses of government. We all need representation that isn’t owned by corporate interests.
Agreeing do disagree without rancor should be the basis of our interactions with others. Gregor I admire you immensely, your talent with all the tools you own, and your ability to state your position with the world we’re in. Thank you JT

As others have said thank you for posting this and if I am being honest as I was reading I was thinking you could not be more wrong. But sitting here reflecting it is your opinion it is not wrong but is yours. I am not going to dive into one camp or the other on this what happened to that man was wrong what has happened after that is wrong. Now how do we all move forward and effect positive change boy I am not sure our country is so polarized right now with every thing that happens getting 50% of the country outraged and the other 50% thinking nothing is wrong. But again wish I was as articulate as you in expressing my opinion but thank you for putting your thoughts out there.

Just to follow up, we do all have a right to our own opinions but not our own facts. I agree with much of what Gregor posted but we part company on the facts related to the things our president has said and stands for. We all do need to check our sources. I learned way back to listen to what was actually said and not reports of someone else’s take on what was said.

Much respect all around for this community.

Thanks. Just based on numbers probably a third of my subscribers will disagree with me. But based on community I think 100% of my subscribers would be great people to sit down with and have a beer. We could agree to disagree and we would not stop being friends and supporters.

So thanks!

My life is a series of breaking and rebuilding things so perhaps that's where our country is at. RINO's are cooler than Elephants or Asses. Cougars are better than all of them.

I fully agree. We are all trapped in our own echo chambers. Realizing that is the first step towards expanding our media sources. I was a pretty regular reader of the National Review in addition to the NYTimes and Washington Post. I am always much more interested in having a conversation with someone who might disagree with me. It's how we see other perspectives.

Thanks Sam. Consider this a standing offer to have a beer when this craziness is over. I'm sure we'd get along.

Self reflection is essential.

Also, getting away from the news is recommended. Sorry for the delay in responding here - we got out for the first time since the end of February. It was a much needed break.

Oregon has begun opening up little by little. Mostly the more rural areas and some but not all campgrounds. Oregonians suffer a rather dreary winter so when spring comes there are few populations more enthusiastic about getting out than ours. Typically this means all campgrounds are booked 6 months in advance which is the earliest you can book a campsite. It's sort of crazy but with all the reservations cancelled due to Covid it was a clean slate when the campgrounds opened.

i-Sv5QSJ5-X2.jpg

This place is called Laurence Lake or Kinnikinnick Campground. It's a small campground on a small lake just at the base of Mt. Hood and at the end of a tiny dirt road. Typically it's pretty full.

i-kLqmnLp-X2.jpg

Our friend Matt (who I've shot a few Rev'It! projects with) booked a site when it opened and last week mentioned it to us. It looked like we snagged the last camper site so we fully expected the place to be full.

It was completely empty. Not a soul was there. Just Matt and us - there wasn't even a camp host. It rained two out of the three days we were there but in a miraculous turn of events the camper stayed dry. I kept expecting some leak somewhere but no - it was finally sealed up and waterproof.

After replacing pretty much every single part of the furnace I was thrilled to the point of ecstatic when replacing the gas valve finally got the furnace working. It's been four years without reliable heat and when night fell and it got cold I was more than a little excited to turn on the heat. In fact I was told to turn it down more than once.

I thought that was the final piece of the puzzle - that last part to make the trailer reliable but somehow fixing the furnace upset the gods of the RV universe and the water heater broke on the trip. The relief valve seemed to leak and while the heater heated the water it also ended up puking the bulk of our fresh water into the dirt. We didn't notice because it was raining.

And I didn't care.

i-hCj3Mfn-X2.jpg

We were camped by a lake in the mountains and out of our house for the first time in three months. It was great.

i-GQbgFQd-X2.jpg

It's been a strange thing dealing with Covid. Everyone has their own level of seriousness and we've been pretty strict. It doesn't hurt that we both essentially work from home and with the kids home our isolation is pretty complete. I think the saddest thing was on the drive up to the campground when Lucas said, "You know what I'm most excited about on this camping trip? That I get to finally play with another kid!"

It has effected all of us and we don't quite realize how until we start to come back to normal.

Well stated. The civility of Garage Journal really appealed to me when I first followed you over here from ADVRider, and it's one of the reasons I've stuck around.

That looks like a great vacation spot! We're hoping to get out into the woods here in a couple weeks.

Glad to see you were able to get out and enjoy some time with the family and in nature Gregor.

Funny, there is a Kinnikinnick state park near me that we get to by boat out on the st. croix river.

You know, I keep talking about connections. We bought our 1st of FOUR Avions in about 1980. We dragged them across the country at least 6 times (Florida was base camp where we taught school). Towed with vans, Suburbans and pickups. Had the time of our lives. Came west so often we settled, at last, in Central Oregon.

Thanks Mike! You're so right. It was such a great chance to recharge and we're planning a long weekend with Ben and his family for fathers day and I'm really looking forward to that. Our pistol team suspended practice and with restaurants closed I've not seen Ben nearly enough.

I'm a fan of other forums, but this one had always been impressively civil.

Yeah, this is a good group here. Knowledgeable and civil.

I have to say that I really, really love the Avion. I love that my father did the research to learn that they were a better built version of the Airstreams and that he searched this one out. It is the most lasting thing that I have from him and also something that I can share with my kids which means a lot. Also, I know he would be over the moon at how I've restored his trailer. There's still plenty to do but it is really working now. When I wake up early and have coffee before everyone is up I think about how he used to stare out the windows and drink his coffee and read his books. It's a very nice full circle.

And of course you came to Oregon - it's the best!

Alright, today I try to fix the water heater and then the swingarm. One is distinctly more exciting than the other. I'll let you figure out which is which.

Gregor,

All of us have seen this and done nothing. And that's what's happened. Nothing.

This very thought -- even before I read this thread -- has been weighing heavily on me lately. I was raised by hippy parents too, and taught to treat all people with respect. I have strived my whole life to live up to the values that I was raised with, and yet... now I feel like I haven't done nearly enough. Clearly, with the world around me on fire, I have not made enough of an impact. I have not taken action, I have not shouted down the racists loud enough or long enough or painfully enough to make a difference.

I ask myself "what can I possibly do to make this better?" and though I struggle for an answer, I know that asking that question of myself is at least a step in the right direction. We must all ask ourselves that question every day, until the question no longer makes sense.

Peace.

Without wishing to distract from the heavier topics rightfully featured and discussed here, Gregor, Modern Jess and others, you might enjoy Laura Koln’s making and video work.

I’ve just found her channel and binged for the last hour or so. A bit of Jimmy Diresta meets the lady that built the Tesla pickup.

I’m a big fan of Laura’s. My foray into making videos has forced me to really pay attention to the meta aspects of other people’s maker videos: style, pacing, editing, color grading, lighting, and on and on. I have learned much from Laura’s videos, above and beyond the actual build topic. I also really dig Diresta and This Old Tony, and also Alex the French Cooking Guy.

Your vids are great! I’m going to build the crosscut sled ASAP.
You should put a link in your sig line, or at least tell folks the name of the channel. I had a relatively hard time finding you but, I did find a lot of women named Jess talking about makeup and home decor...

Makeup and home decor are big money on YouTube. Alas, not something I'm very good at.

Crosscut sled, huh? Those can be extremely lucrative. I built one out of a 4' x 4' sheet of 3/4" MDF, a 2x4, and a pair of cheap aluminum T-slot rails from Amazon. Maybe had $40 into it all-in. When the insurance adjuster was tallying up everything I lost in the shop fire, she asked me about the crosscut sled. I was pretty honest about everything and told her flat out what it was and what I paid to put it together, so I figured I'd get little if anything for it.

Edit: Weirdly, the second half of this post got cut off, so the rest of the story goes like this:

I ended up getting well over a thousand bucks for that sled because the adjuster couldn't find anything like it at the local hardware store, so she just started looking online for anything resembling what I described and came up with some German-made precision woodworking table or something.

So worked out for me!

I guess what I'm getting at is that a crosscut sled can be very valuable when it looks like the board standing on its side behind the table saw here:

Maybe think about if you want to be part of the "republican" community or the larger community that is this country.

Seems that your own advice about information sources is so ironic with that statement. You obviously have no idea what the collective republican community wants for this country if that's what you think. Remember the parts you said about media and information? I'd say you've had more of one side vs the other.

Keep watching your Democratic leaders try to tear the President down and tell me honestly that they aren't themselves adding to the divide in this country. The man in the White House can't say anything without it being taken out of context in an effort to make him look bad, and it's working as evidenced here.

Too much effort has been put into looking at skewed appearances instead of actual results.
