Trane Furnace Blower

Hi guys I am needing a little help with my home furnace. The blower motor has stopped working. The motor doesn't operate on either A/C or heat.

I called my usual HVAC guy who came out and said the unit is too complex and we should call a Trane dealer. I called a Trane dealer who came out to diagnose it and said we needed a blower motor control module. He would be willing to replace it for $1,874. With the bill being more than I was prepared to spend I payed the service call fee and I am trying to figure out what to do.

My usual guy says that he can replace the whole unit for a little over $3k but it would be a lower model than what I have.

I could order something from alpine air.

My preference would be to repair what I already have. Can you guys help me on the ordering the correct parts front?

I currently have a Trane XC95M. 120,000 BTU.

I remember the repair man saying something about it being a 1HP motor. I also imagine its in my skill set to replace the blower myself. I just need a little help sourcing the correct parts.

My Trane 11 year old unit is acting up right now, motor hasn't stopped, but it seems the output is lower. Talked to my Buddy, he said the module is typically the issue. He did indicate they are expensive, but his off the top of his head number was around $700. Maybe he was low, or maybe the guy you called is trying to take advantage of the situation.

Regardless, my Buddy will be here in the morning to work on mine, I will post what we find.

My Buddy did indicate he thought that Trane had a 10 year warranty on the module...

Start with........Google the Model number plus blower motor.

It’s variable speed ECM motor so as you already know $$$

Google will lead to...... EBay sales for parts, Amazon Parts, YouTube videos, some testing and troubleshooting info.

Google ECM motor repair.........there are some common failure points.

those trane motor controllers are always expensive. somewhere in the neighborhood of 600-1000 for just the part.

buy it online and install it yourself.

or try fixing it as Showkey says. worth a shot!

Searching online there aren't very many results based on plugging "m055pwcpe-0226" into google.

Ebay does show a used option for $250 but I would prefer new if possible.

Ideas on how to find the correct one if the sticker number doesn't yield very many results? OR Maybe there is an updated part?

Your "usual HVAC guy" should have an account with a HVAC supply company (like Johnstone or similar) that will sell the parts to him at wholesale rather than retail. See if he will let you buy the motor using his discount.

But as others have said do some research on how to troubleshoot these motors. You might need a control board. The Tecmate Pro is a $100 diagnostic tool. Hopefully the 2nd company did the right tests and isn't just throwing parts at the problem.

They are all expensive no matter the manufacture of the furnace. A lot of the time the price difference with or without the motor isn't much of a difference. Try buying just a PSC motor for a Lennox gas furnace some of those are just as costly...

The testing tool is cut and dry easy to diagnose with it. I would get the part number and do a search on ebay for it. Used parts are not a good idea or less you know the person personally. I doubt any HVAC company will let you just buy it at their cost, If they do pay in mind once you pick it up you bought it no mater what you do with it. Of course they will tell you that or should.

The used parts in the HVAC has become very popular as the parts prices climb.

Not all together different than the automotive parts from salvage/recycling Yard ( aka junk yard). HVAC companies have a junk yard “out back.” It’s become a secondary business that flows cash !

Turned out to be the control module, part was $780, 2 hours labor.

Thank you for the help guys. Using stonefans help finding the parts numbers on repair clinic I found the motor I needed on eBay. My preference would have been new but when new is almost $900 and I was able to make an offer that was accepted on a used one for $200 shipped it is hard not to buy used. If it had been my car I would’ve got used in that case. So I did the same on the furnace.

I got it installed today and we’re back in business.

That uses a ecm motor it has line voltage , and control voltage and signal voltage. This is control by a board. So there is a diagnosis procedure that has to be gone through before motor is condemned. Amazon has the motor $1200 plus might need a bracket. Trane dealer that has some one familiar with this furnace.

Wow I've heard those ecm motors can be expensive but 900, $1200? That's insane. I would be very tempted to mount a PSC motor in there if you can get a simple on/off signal to control it.
