Bear emission analyzer help identify

Hi i have this analyzer that i brought, cant seem to find much about it, it does have leads, and ive powered it on but i think its missing a keyboard as it says to press enter and it also says thatcalibration is due itseem to have rpm,engine temp,, does anyone have copies of the manual, or software i think the model number is 50-01x it also says sales numbe a50-201, any clues. i would like to get it going.

i Have tried the Teambearusa.com and they dont know anything about this model, so iam asking anyone got any ideas , even if they might know someone who had one these units, anything at all ,kind regards

It looks to be from the early-mid 90's. The serial number tag should have a date code. Sorry, I don't have info on this model.

It may be an add-on for a larger engine analyzer, not a stand alone unit. I had a sun analyzer with several add-on pieces like that which I figured were useful but turned out they aren't able to run without the main unit...

Bear equipment is really tough to figure out, very little info out there I have a bear lift, and a bear tire balancer I never got to work, they seemed to rebadge a lot of stuff making it difficult to decipher the actual maker or find any manuals...now I steer clear of that brand when I see used equipment.

With a picture tube, it would likely be a stand-alone unit, but I'm not familiar with that one. They sometimes made stuff for state emissions programs.

I have 2 file cabinets of info on Bear equipment from the 80's. They aren't as popular as Sun, so very little has been scanned and put online. I you need anything let me know, but no guarantees I have what you need.

Their heyday was in the 60's until the early 90's.

I just happened to see this question during a google search about a different piece of equipment. I joined this group so I could reply. Hopefully you are still interested in the answer.
I designed the electronics for this unit in the early 90's. I also wrote most of the core (drivers) software for this unit.

This unit was called an "EGA" or European Gas Analyzer. It was first sold in Germany then later sold in other countries in Europe and elsewhere. The high level software would have been tailored to a particular regions emissions testing program.
I originally designed it to use a standard PC XT keyboard. I understand that a few years later they added an adapter board inside that allowed it to work with a standard PC AT keyboard.

If there is anything else you would like to know, particularly any technical details, I may be able to help you.

This particular unit, the "EGA", was branded as "Bear" but it was really made by engineers (including me) that were from a company called "Allen Test Products".

Allen Test was located in Kalamazoo MI. SPX corporation purchased Bear (located in Wisconsin) sometime in the late 80's or early 90's. Later around 1993, SPX purchased Allen Test and merged the two companies. Moving many of the the Bear Engineers to Kalamazoo.

Around 1999 SPX sold or licensed their alignment business (Bear Brand) and turned over support for their older Engine analyzer / Gas Analyzer business to Cartek International.

When I was working on the EGA part of the design requirements driven by various emissions programs, was that the unit must have a floppy drive. This was usually so that the state or local government in charge could get an update of the data stored by stopping by and exchanging a floppy.

Because of the requirement for a floppy, most of our competitors decided to make their respective units PC based. I had some experience with floppy drive control and offered to make a non-PC based system that would still have floppy support. This allowed us to be able to guarantee that we could build product for a long time without worrying that a PC motherboard (or mini tower) would be obsoleted in a short time. This in fact had bitten a lot of manufacturers that had gone the PC route as sometimes it was hard to get the same motherboard for more than 6 months. Some of our engineering managers wanted to hedge their bet with the EGA so they made the case big enough to accept a PC if we weren't able to get the custom board up and running in time. This is why you see so much space inside the unit. It could enclose a mini tower.

It ended up having several advantages and a few firsts.

It was less expensive to manufacture than a PC based system. There was no significant waiting for bootup. The system proved to be very reliable as compared to some of those that were PC based.

This unit made use of a new, at the time, type of memory called FLASH. Prior to this most manufacturers used EPROM memory for the main program in many type of test equipment. These were the type of memory chip that had a little glass window, usually covered by a label indicating the version number or part number. These chips retained the memory after power was removed. At the factory these chips could be erased by removing them and placing them under ultraviolet light for about a half hour. Chips could them be reprogrammed a placed into boards. Some may remember servicing these type of units. Updates were provided by the factory as a set of chips which a technician had to swap out. Old chips were usually sent back to the factory as a core.

As you can imagine this method for updating was not ideal. When this new type of memory, FLASH, became availible it allowed easier updates in the field. Could even be done by the end user. This type of early FLASH could be completely erased in circuit. It then could be programmed byte by byte. I combined this with the older type of EPROM so that the EPROM would be able to asct kind of like a BIOS and fail safe in case the Flash was erased and power went out. Then I wrote routines that would allow you to simply turn on the unit with an update disk in place and the unit would update the FLASH memory and start the program.

As I remember, I had codes on the floppy disk so we could also make a disk that would run a program but not update the FLASH. This was with the idea that diagnostics etc. could be made availible without having to change the program in FLASH.

It may seem obvious in this day but back then this was new turf. I remember telling the VP of engineering that we wouldn't ever have to send out EPROM updates for this machine. His response was "I've heard that before!". I had to explain the concept because at that time it was not obvious. Once understood he definetely liked the idea.

Good memories thinking about this. A different time. Memory was much more expensive than now. The whole system had about 128K (thousand, not Meg or Gig) of non-volotile memory and 128K of RAM.


Hope some are interested in at least some of this. There are some other neat things about this unit if anybody is interested. Might be fun to write some custom code for this to make it a stand alone gas analyzer without the emissions testing part.

I remember Allen. I have my dads Allen scope from the 60s. It was one of the things that got me interested in scopes and auto repair.

WOW!! Brought back memories. Last Bear I used was in 1998 when I left the industry. I forgot about Allen. Rare to hear from someone involved in the development of a product. Great beginning posts.

Long shot here since I have a Sun you don't have any knowledge about them or know someone that does by any chance??

Very cool indeed Ben K! We used to have an Allen Smart Scope in the 90's. Tape drive unit. It was quite advanced when it was new. Don't know if you knew Jim Linder, but I know he worked there at Allen for quite a while too. Did his Guru School about 12 years ago, great guy.

We certainly had multiple items that were PC based and became obsolete very quickly. Of note was an otherwise very nice Hunter alignment machine that used an obsolete pc control which we could no longer find components for. Sad, it was a good machine till then.

OBD had not yet come out yet, and car manufacturers had their own proprietary plug-in diagnostic connector. This required annual updates for Chrysler, CCC, EEC-IV, etc. Ford was innovative with the OASIS system where you use a modem to dial in for service info.

What engineers went from New Berlin to Kalamazoo? I knew many of them. It must have been a shock to give people a choice of leaving or moving. I know one guy who left and went to Snap On Diagnostics in Lincolnshire. As an aside, when Sun moved from Harlem & Avondale to Crystal Lake they lost a lot of their good engineers.

I don't know Jim Linder. I think the guy that ran the school when I was there was Frank Newton. I know what you mean about the PC's unfortunately a lot of PC based equipment became un-repairable way quicker than units that had dedicated controllers.

Thanks! As far as Sun I don't have any direct experience but it seems we were all using very similar design techniques. Probably because of what components and technologies were available at the time. If schematics were available, I could probably help diagnose problems. Might be kind of fun. I don't really know anybody that has experience with them but I could check around.

Yes, I worked on some of those early pre-OBD systems that read a data stream from the vehicle. That brings back a lot of memories.

I know the company spent a lot of time trying to decide whether to consolidate the engineering in Kalamazoo or New Berlin. I'm not sure how the decision was made but I'm pretty sure they wanted to keep Bears VP of engineering regardless. I agree, it must have been a tough situation and a hard decision. I don't remember it being such a shock because seemed like we were unsure for several months which group would be given the option to move to the other. Also, any of us were uncertain if we would be given an offer to transfer. One engineer that I had met was the head of their alignment. I don't remember his name but he was really smart and I wished he would have come but he didn't want to make the move. I'm sure they lost some good talent.

Steve Sparacino, John Woolley, Mike Kling (as VP of engineering), Mike Alusic (a manager). I'm sure there are more but that's all I can think of now. I had most engineering interface with Steve and John and they were both great guys and interesting people.

Just bought me an old Allen EGA type 50-01Y for testing my classic cars exhaust gasses.
I understand they are sturdy equipment and awaiting my keyboard to arrive hoping it will kick alive.
It shows that the clock battery is empty so i want to renew it, are they available?

It works, needs yearly calibration.
One question about the Ignition timing possibility settings it shows.
How do these work ? there is Magnetic timing and ? timing.
would like to have them running too.
Is there a possibility to overrule the passwords/codes and have it reset to factory mode ?
Manuals would be appreciated.

I must have missed your reply. Yes, I worked for them but on the training side up until 1989. I knew John Woolley, Mike Kling, Mike Alusick (I corrected the spelling) . Worked with Mike Alusick quite a bit. He was a hilarious guy to hang out with, always cracking everybody up. Just googled his name and sadly he passed from Covid in December 2020. :cry:

We head near clones of both those units in school in '93. As i recall the Allen was pretty new (paid for by Sears to auto tech programs for corporate malfeasance in selling customers unneeded parts) and the service guy was there almost every week trying to get allthe features to work at once.

some cars of the era had a magnet in the balancer with a holder of a mag probe on the timing cover for timing/rpm info.

I think the bear was an IR 2 gas analyser.

Looking for information about this analyzer I came across the conversation in this forum. I have one in my possession since it was included free of charge to a batch of machine that I bought (a small workshop that closed a few years ago). I would like to know if there is any user or operation manual since I have intentions to make it work again. Today I connected it and it turned on but the following problem pointed out to me: "low clock battery. call the technical service to carry out a repair".
