I screwed up with my old Wayne air compressor

Hey all, I've been working on getting an old Wayne air compressor (model D15V) back up and running when I broke the top piston ring trying to get it off. Does anybody have recommendations on where to get another one or is there a way to fix this one? Never heard of anybody fixing a piston ring but I'm thinking this air compressor is 80ish years old and I'm sure parts are going to next to impossible to find. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

You have the model number so find a parts diagram for it and order new piston rings. However, I don't think D15V is a model number as it doesn't cross reference to anything. Get the correct numbers and google search the model number with the key words parts diagram and it should get you pointed in the right direct at least get you a part number to lookup in Ebay or Amazon, etc.

If you can do some accurate measuring that ring would not be difficult to make. I've made several for small IC engine models. The cast iron might be pricey. Try one of the company's that supply the hit and miss engine market they might be able to send you to their piston ring supplier.

"I don't think D15V is a model number"
Really?! That kind of makes sense as I cant find anything online. How would I even start to find a correct model number?

I might have to go this route if I cant get a correct model number. I dont know anything about the hit & miss engine market. Not to be spoon fed but what company would you recommend?

Thanks gentlemen, I really appreciate your help!

By the way, sense it appears that I have an incorrect model number, here is a picture of the air compressor after it shorted out and I start working on the motor. This is sitting on top of a vertical 30ish(?) gallon tank.

Something, somewhere has a ring the same size I'm betting. Get a Hastings catalog and some measurements and I can just about guarantee you will find something that will probably be a match or can be made to fit with a bit of end gap filing. I used rings from an Alfa Romeo 2L v-8 once to rebuild an obsolete machine. I know there are rings available from an Acura that drop right into an old XS650 Yamaha motorcycle.

I do have a ring for that size but don’t know where the smaller high pressure size is off

I love that people know this information that is useless to 99.99..% of the world. But the few people that need it love it.

If the ring is too fat, top to bottom, you can sand it on 220 WetOrDry a little bit, or chuck the piston up in a lathe, and take off a tiny bit of the land. If a little too large a diameter, you can grind on the end a little, so the ring will compress more. Keep looking, and you'll find a solution.

Piston O.D. = 2.241
Grove height = 0.123
Grove depth = 0.122
and some measurements that a youtube video mentioned..
Bore diameter = 2.241
Radial wall thickness (ring) = 0.103
Ring face width (ring) = 0.123

I dont know if this would help but a number that is cast into the side of the pump case is AC-4145

Thanks for all the help guys! Except for a wagon wheel, I'm pretty sure this is the oldest tool ive worked on. Ive been learning every step of the way.

That's pretty much a 57mm bore when converted to metric. I see lots of them available for
Chinese GY6 motors and Kawasaki KX125 MX bikes. It shouldn't be too hard to find something workable.

I see lots of them to but I dont see any mention of what the other measurements are. This will take some digging.

1.7465 in my small that I don’t know where it’s at
Can you explain this because I dont know what 1.7465 in my small means. Im not the sharpest tool in the shed. Sorry.

Sorry engineer2, I didn't see your reply. Ill take a look at those companies. Thank you.
I did want to post though that I ordered some from Deves.com. I started with Hastings and they couldnt help me but they suggested I call another company. Thats how it went until 4 or 5 companies later somebody suggested Deves. Im going to have to stack two rings together which I wasnt sure about. I thought about it though and figured I could put the gaps on opposite sides and basically have a gapless ring. we'll see how it goes.

I surf the Hobby-Machinist forum and saw a post in a miniature engine build where the guy is making piston rings and thought of your thread.

Here is a link to his post and his fabrication drawing he is starting from. Granted smaller scale than what you are doing but maybe doable if you have a lathe?

Start reading around Post 91:

It will work well. I did the same thing years ago when rebuilding a 4 cylinder Indian motorcycle.

Hmmm, I wonder why Im not getting emails when I get a reply? Sorry guys, will definitely check out that miniture engine thread! Sounds interesting! Good to know the stacked rings will work!

Looking for some guidance on a couple more things. Looks like I cant use gasket maker on this because im not getting clearance I need and the piston is hitting the head. So what kind of material do you guys use to make your gaskets?
Also, where is a good place to get a new belt? i wouldnt be surprised if this is the original belt. Its a B.F. Goodrich 4L4UO? Maybe 4L4U8?

Hudson Belting in Worcester Mass can get or make you pretty much any type of belt imaginable

Thanks guys for the information! Do you think that number 4L400? I think Ill get in touch with Hudson Belting. Im sure they can probably point me in the right direction. As far as the rings go, I ended up using rings that end up in Japanese motorcycles. So definitely small engines! Thanks!
