Anyone have a suggestion for a 100 foot retractable garden hose reel ...
of decent quality and will actually work?

I see a few on Amazon but I’m not sure which one to choose ...

That's a long way for a retractor and they use 1/2 hose instead of 5/8. As soon as that hose expands a little it might be a problem. I like 100 on a 150 reel, 75 on 100 and if it's down at working height a manual is fine by me. I put a Liberty steel manual on one end of my shop, mine was great, worked dandy, another guy here just bought one said his had a problem.
I looked at the first one, it's priced decent, not terrible expensive. I have 2 of the black legacy in one of the pics for air, not for cold weather, the hose cracked. They worked well other than that, had them a long time and they were about 50$ at the time.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing about the hundred foot reach

I think that’s asking a lot from a retractable reel

I should probably go with my gut
And just stick with a manual reel

This stainless job from liberty looks pretty nice.

I got it in painted at about 85$ as I recall. There is another thread here somewhere on it. Seems I recommended it and the one he got didn't show up right. I cant remember the poster. I was impressed with the one I got, not fancy but has a pretty decent swivel. The swivel doesnt go thru the drum but it was ok. I made some minor change to it but don't recall why.

Not sure if this is a Canadian only brand or not, but I have a couple Gardena auto retracting hose reels that I really like. They're all plastic, but surprisingly robust.

I have auto retracting reels for my air hoses, and extension cord, but the Gardena water hose feels the most solid. Never locks up or releases when I don't want it to.

Comes in 50 ft and 115 ft versions I believe.

I have the 90' Giraffe model out by the pool. I rarely extend it further than around 70' and have not had a problem with it so far.

I think those Gardenias are German made

This reminds me, I thought they were Swedish, but my Gardena says Husqvarna AB on the back of it. So must be owned by them.

They make quality stuff and it seems like that quality had trickled down to the Gardena brand as well.

Cox and reelcraft are quality no doubt.

But I don’t think I would want that mounted outdoors on the back patio.

Yeah
The giraffe looks nice. Very similar to the gardena but substantially cheaper.

I’m wondering how much of a difference it really makes between 1/2” and 5/8” hose....

Im on well water and basically dragging out to the garden & patio plants ....
Im thinkin 1/2” would be sufficient.

I haven’t measured my current hoses
I’m assuming they mean 1/2” ID

I'll let you know how it works out. I wanted 5/8 retractable, but they are very tough to find, primarily because the weight probably becomes a problem for a retractable mechanism. I just need for car washing, watering plants and occasional basic pressure washing for the home. Crossing my fingers that 1/2 is fine (my biggest concern is pressure washing). I think I get the Cox reel tomorrow.

I just measured the hose I use by the garage for power washing and its somewhere between 5/8 & 1/2
More like 9/16 or more than likely some thing metric. 15mm maybe?

Anyway it feeds the power washer just fine.

Start bu getting a 100 ft roll of 3/4 black poly and put it just underground on a summer circuit. This eliminates the near 100 ft before you even start. Never got to fuss with it again and its under 20$. I might even t a hydrant about at the pool along the way. I did 3 already this year. Get potable water, garden hoses need to be flushed every use for drinking. 19$ a roll plus tax at Menards. 20 cents a food, cheaper than a 5/8 garden hose and 2x as good.

There is a lot to a well. Depending on condition, size etc and demand there are advantages to size the pipe and attatchments correctly. If you are irrigating and have enough it matters then ideal is to run continuous vs cycling and a 130 ft 1/2 hose might not work. It will work to hand water plants, just like wire, sometimes we suggest upsize, sometimes the load is so low its irrelevant. General use.
If you want to utilize the well, fill the pool then it pays to do a bit of plant engineering especially on a well with broad pressure range and equipment starts.

I had two of the Eley reels at my house in WA ( should have pulled them when I moved) and they held up for years. Their hoses are nice too.

A long hose will work poorly at 30 may do well at 50. City water can be consistent but service limited to 3/4 but with modern fixtures could flow thru quite a bit and leave the house some. I just worked on a little residential, shallow and rated at 1/2, 12 gpm at 44# I think. It was better, I wasn't real accurate but figured 15 before I see the specs and 55#. The generic may have been a standard etc who knows but it was pretty good. The house had silcocks, no freeze and it took 2 of them to run enough to run it constant. it was a 45/65 at the well and took the 2 circuits to run it at 55 which is dandy for hoses.

I have two, Mom has two, Dad has two, and we all approve.

Only buy them on sale. They frequently go on sale.

https://www.frontgate.com/100-retra...MI0Pikiqme6gIVCorICh3WGQwGEAQYASABEgJCl_D_BwE

The plastic case isn’t very good in direct sunlight, they fade. But I have never coated them with anything.

Mom had one that stopped retracting and customer service took care of it under warranty, no problem.

I do find that shutting off the water and bleeding off the pressure helps the reel retract more quickly.

$70 at Menards. https://www.menards.com/main/outdoo...t-hose-reel/703-1/p-1444438057320-c-13104.htm

I've had it for two years now, I like it. I have a mod or two and I'll take pics tomorrow. I used to have 120' on it but now I have a good 100' 3/4" and it serves me well.

You can get the non-stainless steel version at Home Depot for about $ 90. I am very pleased with the one I bought a few months ago.

No rust issues?

Seems to be holding up pretty well. Good less expensive option.

I don't remember why but I put a piece of 3/4" length of PEX behind the handle for some reason. You can see it between the handle and main bracket. I also have a 45 degree goose neck adapter to make the hose transfer better to the real.

I use the heck out of it to water bushes and young trees as well as the lawn.

Eley gets my vote.

Mine, too. Easy manual rewind, and just overall very high quality. I bought the optional post mount kit for the wall mounted reel, and keep a 100 foot Goodyear rubber hose on it. Gone are the terrible kinks my wife can put in a coiled hose, :) and she loves it as well.

Solar light?

Got mine installed yesterday

Very pleased with it.
Excellent quality and winds up very easily.
Also very impressed with the Eley sprayer .... the watering head is great for plants.

The whole thing is built like a tank.

Aw heck, I have had an Eley since 2012, when they were called Rapid Reel. I just made the connection a few days ago. Love mine, both wall mounted, the 100' variety. I like the new gooseneck at the reel, asking them if I can retrofit that on to mine, reduce hose strain.

Mine needs a bit of cleanup, the aluminum block that holds the handle is getting a bit fuzzy with oxidation.

Nice to know I got in the cool kids club early for a change.
