Kennedy Toolbox find

Picked this up at the flea market today for $30. It's missing the top handle and has been repainted over the original krinkle finish. Otherwise all drawers open and close smoothly and felt liners are in nice shape. Where can I get a new handle?

The original handle on an old square top like that would probably be a leather wrapped handle. It's likely any replacement handle you get from Kennedy would be a newer plastic design.

The Kennedy I had like that had green felt in the drawers. I'm guessing yours has been redone.

I believe you must go through an authorized Kennedy dealer to obtain parts. MSC, Grainger, Enco, ect.

Thanks. I suspect that you are correct regarding the felt. The blue doesn't look original and is in too good of shape.

Thanks. I also like the blue even thought I don't think its original. Anyway now I have a proper place for the few machinists tools that I own.

They're a handle little box. I gave away the one I had like that to a friend and now he uses it for his gunsmithing and reloading tools.

That pull-out work area w/ the parts holder indentions is cool. Or at least that's what I'd use it for...

The pull out section folds back against the drawers and locks in place when you close the top lid so that the top and all the drawers are locked. At least that is how mine work.

don't quote me but i think a couple places out there that do wooden machinist chest restorations could help with a leather handle. i doubt that it is worth the cost so i would not worry about a kennedy replacement or even a hardware store version.

I don't think that I'll actively search for a handle. If I find one that fits somewhere then fine. I'll probably just place it on a shelf or another toolbox or something and use it that way.

Those are very nice boxes. I like how well made everything is on them. I bought the same box a couple of weeks ago and I am very impressed with it.

Is it also that nasty *** brown krinkle color? I generally like to keep my stuff authentic but I just don't like that color. Anyone here repaint these boxes?

As to refinishing it, it would look cool if you stripped it and had it chromed.....or you could go the cheap retro-70's route and cover it in wood grain vinyl.

I've always liked that color & finish on those boxes, especially with the green felt. I guess that's why they're making boxes in all different colors these days

Rust-Oleum Hammered finish would look period. I mix the gray and black evenly and come out with a darker gray, paint most of my shop equipt. that color.

Kennedy boxes were also available in a dark red so going red is not out of the question.

What was the finish on the red? Krinkle, satin, gloss? Does anyone have a pic of the red that Kennedy was using on these machinist boxes?

I picked up a Union tool box with that same exact drawer arrangement at the flea market the other day. As I was leaving I asked the guy what he wanted for it and he said "I am leaving and don't want to take it home so you can have it".

Yup.

I like it. It is not in great shape but it oozes coolness and I can not get myself to repaint it.
