Do These Craftsman Sockets Exist?

I’ve been on the hunt for some time now trying to “complete” my craftsman socket set. I don’t care if it’s new or old or a mix, as long as I have a craftsman set.

Here is my dilemma: I’ve never seen many size sockets from craftsman. Not sure they exist.

Example: 3/8 Drive standard/shallow 12-point 20 and 22mm. I’ve looked for a year. Never seen one. Were these made?

Same with 6 point 1/2 drive shallow standard 1 and 1/2 inch. I can find a 12 point but no 6 point.

🤷🏻****♂️

No.

Looking at one of my old Craftsman Tool catalogs:
3/8 drive 12 point shallow skipped 20 mm offered 21 mm (44314) but, didn't offer anything larger.

3/8 drive deep 12 point sockets ran 9-19 mm only.

1/2 drive shallow six point sockets ran 3/8 to 1 1/4. no 1 1/2 was offered in six point.

Welcome to the journal, hope this helps you.

Thanks. Is the same true for the larger 1/2 drive standard larger MM sizes in 6-point?

I can find all the way up to 36mm in 12-Point but not 6-point...

Also I’m assuming the 1/2 inch drive /32nds also dont exist in 6 point. I also have those in 12 point but 6 point no where to be seen

You are correct, no 32nds in 1/2 drive six point.

1/2 drive shallow chrome ran 9-19 mm and 22 mm in six point.

You can probably find those sizes in Armstrong sockets, which look similar to USA made Craftsman sockets but they would have the Armstrong name on them. I filled in some gaps in my older USA made Craftsman sockets with Armstrong.

I'd expect the other US- made Danaher brands would also be pretty darn close - Allen, KD, NAPA, maybe Master Mechanic, and maybe Easco (older, and might have a knurled nand, don't recall ofhand).

I'd swear I've got a Craftsman 21mm deep 12 pt in 3/8, and will check when I get home. I don't recall seeing 20mm or 22mm shollow on the pegs, but I also don't remember ever specifically looking for one.

Can you post pics of a few of those pages? I have a late 90s set that I’m trying to make sure is complete. Mostly 12pt sockets. Your info on no 12pt 3/8 20mm just relieved a lot of anxiety. Lol.

1/2” 12pt metric—was there any skips? 29mm, 31mm?

I have both 12 point deep 3/8 drive in 21mm and 22mm both made in the USA I don’t ever recall seeing a 20mm 3/8 deep

Hope this helps

I don’t know why everyone is saying they didn’t make a 3/8 20mm 6 point yes they did I own one I found at the pawn shop about a year ago it is date code series G1 if you are wondering. As for the 22mm I don’t think they did.

here are a couple of scanned pages from the Craftsman Power & Hand Tool Catalog 2008-2010 listing 3/8 and 1/2 drive open stock sockets.

If you remember in 2010 the Craftsman tool catalog stopped listing open stock items such as sockets. Also these are US made sockets. I don't have any craftsman catalogs after the line went Asian made.

Hope this helps you in your quest

I actually just used my Craftsman USA 6 point 20mm the other day on some Ford Bronco 2 suspension bolts it’s a 3/8 drive one I remember we had tons of the 6 point 3/8 drive 20mm in auto shop during high school all of them were the G1 series so it could of been a limited thing for that series only which Craftsman according to my research made the least number of sockets with that date code.

Same here, but the Armstrong brand no longer exists. The Armstrong web site refers you to GearWrench or Crescent.

Where do you find the catalogs I don’t recall my Sears ever giving out catalogs.

a long time ago, when Sears was where america shopped, they had them on display in the tool section and in the catalog section in the back of the store. They also had a great christmas tool catalog that featured many new tools coming out the next spring. I think the newest catalog I have is from 2012 or so. The catalogs went downhill starting around 2010. :(

Oh ok I see I missed that era of Sears stuff I rarely ever went there during that time because I didn’t have a whole lot of needs at that time and I think that’s when they started outsourcing.

Does anyone know how to post pictures from the mobile site? I want to post the pictures of the socket everyone was wondering about. I asked a former Sears employee that I knew and done some research and found the 20mm 6 point 3/8 drive were only sold in the large mechanics tool sets and not sold individually and since they rarely got warrantied since they are 20mm they were special order if they did have to be or if someone wanted to buy it individually new.

Thanks so much for posting. Is the consensus that the sockets are about the same quality from the 80s through the laser etched USA made?

I think so except for one thing. I'm not sure when they did it but, probably from the late 1990s or early 2000s, Craftsman chrome sockets switched from having a nice cut out on all four side of the square drive for the drive tool detent ball, to an abomination that was more of a double notch design. I hate it. It also appeared on Armstrong sockets at the same time. You can partially see it in the socket photo above.
Te only other thing that really changed was the size markings. They went from stamped sizes to laser etched only briefly, then to both laser etched & stamped.
You have to remember that craftsman sockets were basic, no frills get the job done, for pennies on the piece set pricing tools. You can't expect a lot but, there are probably of millions of sockets still in use today.

Yes the picture I posted is a double detent one both the ones I have are double detent but luckily not laser etched I hate the laser etched ones they seemed of lesser quality and the etching wore off eventually especially as a mechanic they didn’t last anytime

Looking at the 202.50 socket, you can see that the crazy numbers came in the last several seconds. I've seen this a number of times before. One of the bidders gets in his mind that he's going to snipe some crazy number that no one in their right mind would bid and therefore win the auction. The plan goes awry when another bidder gets the same idea. The first thought the crazy number was $200 even. The winner put in a higher crazy number.

Trouble is, neither one of these bidders had any any belief that the auction would actually go off that high, and never had any intention of paying that kind of money for the item. Chances are excellent that the winner will not pay, and the second place bidder will ghost when offered the second chance. Chances are good you'll see this item re-listed in a week or so.

What's the problem with the double detents? I've seen people complain about them before and I'm just curious what the problem is with them.

I know you didn’t ask me directly but I sorta know why. A lot of people say they fall off the ratchets easier but I haven’t had that problem so it maybe just on certain ratchets.
