I was pulling the tailpipe off my dodge today, and the clamp was really rusted up. well i was useing a 1/2" craftsman ratchet, and it let loose with a bunch of poping, like it was skiping.

I opened it up and fine. but i'm worried that i broke it. It still works but pops a bit while you ratchet it and befor it was nice and smooth.

I used a breaker bar to bust it loose but it was pretty tight still.

As tempted as I am to spew out my usual anti-Craftsman rhetoric, I can't because of that ankle monitoring bracelet I'm wearing. :D

Go to Sears to get it warrentied, wait until there's one person at the counter and see if they will let you pay the difference and upgrade to the better Pro grade ratchet. Much nicer action, no plastic parts.

I just cleaned up an old Craftsman that was doing the same thing, the cause was old grease someone used to lubricate it had hardened, I cleaned it up real well, lubed it and put it back together and it's working as good as new without skipping anymore.

i broke one a couple years ago, then i took it to the store and picked up a pro series chrome one off the shelf and told the girl at the counter that it was the closest they had to the one i had and she gave it to me... lol

Sounds like the same problem I have with the 1/4" Cman ratchets. Whenever you go to tighten or loosen something it just slips. Hopefully the 88 tooth Matco I ordered won't have any problems :)

Same here...though I picked up a Snap-On and haven't had that problem sense.

You distinctly implied that you had intentionally deceived the girl at the counter. Nice work.

I told her what was on the shelf... this is more customer service than theivery.. and customer service is what this thread is about. who knows this cat may get a better ratchet than he walked in with.

I would look a lot closer at the gears at a dead on view . . . You will either see wear in one or more teeth, or small pieces missing . . .

I had a Craftsman 1/2 ratchet that was doing the same thing. Mickey O is right, clean it, lube it and it will be as good or better than new.

the teeth may be worn all the way around and it just appears fine. best to take it in for a new one. then go buy a new snap on ratchet.... smooth smooth smooth

Well the same can be said about Sears. I had a fine tooth 1/4 ratchet older style with the thumb wheel on it and when it broke they said they didn't make a parts kit and then they tried to replace it with the regular tooth 1/4 ratchet without a thumbwheel. If I was a regular joe blow I'm sure they would have got away with that.
