Caution: Old Chemicals

I spent half of today cleaning up after an old fire extinguisher blew up coating my garage in foam. In addition, it was sitting next to my nastiest, liquid, graphite-embedded grease which went everywhere as well. To make matters worse it happened while I was sleeping so everything dried up before I found out about it. So this is a just a friendly reminder to go through your chemical stash and safely dispose of old questionable ones.

My worst one was when a spray can of rubberized undercoating sprung a leak in the side seam. It glued everything around to the shelf and sprayed droplets of that nasty stuff everywhere.

A few months ago I inspected this little ranch style home, the access for the attic was just a storm window on one of the gable ends. I found this just inside the window. There was also a box of mail from the late 50s. Compared to the other electrical problems in the house, it made this like finding some old bottles of Coca-Cola.

I don't even want to think about that... There is an older can of undercoating on that shelving unit, I may want to dump it. I might build some basic doors for it too if I keep the shelving unit, I don't want this to happen again.

How did we ever live through the 50s haha. That looks like some nasty stuff.

I had a powdered one go big... popped the safety and filled my car. Spent two hours cleaning... first tim I stared the AC... had to do it all over again.

Looks like there is no winning here.... :(

Old glass containers may be fragile, but at least they hold up over time.
Last heat wave we had I granned a plastic jug of mineral spirits... my finger went through the side of the jug... Great...
I have had various aerosol cans and plastic containers leak their contents over the years. Currently looking for some sort of containers to transfer things like mineral spirits and acetone into so I can ditch the plastic they get sold in.
