Thanks for the addendum about metal pots. Sometime I’ll have to test how SG attacks aluminum. My crock pot has a glazed ceramic insert.

Has anybody seen a cleaner jaw face on a Craftsman 391.5180 ?

(Fresh out of the Simple Green hot bath)

This is the one that I picked up a few days ago with the Wilton copper jaw covers.

I asked my machine shop about hot tanking an aluminum oil pan, and he told me they use a separate tank with orange degreaser as its most neutral on the aluminum. The ZEP 'orange degreaser' stuff at the hardware store has been treating me well, and does work best warm-hot.

I use hot Simple Green
I picked up a used crock pot at the local re use area of our recycling center. They’re also commonly found in thrift stores for $5-10
Just put your part in the pot, pour in undiluted Simple Green and turn the switch to HIGH.
The time needed depends on the paint. Sometimes it’s loosened in a couple of hours, sometimes all day.
Those of you who live in hot climates can just get a dark colored metal pot and leave it out in the sun.
I then remove the part and hit it with my little electric pressure washer. Alternatively, you can rinse the loosened paint off under running water using a brass brush.

Make sure to dry your parts thoroughly to avoid surface rust. I use an old towel followed by a heat gun.

Shiftless, thanks for this, I will give it a try. Yes, those jaws are like new!

Do you have any experience with the ZEP orange cleaner removing paint?
Maybe it works as well or better than Simple Green???

I’m almost ready to take my nasty black well used and reused tank of simple green to the toxic waste dump station.

I just got this little old style vise for $40 because it has 2 1/2” jaws. I know Parker made this style back in the day but there isn’t a mark on it. Does anybody have any ideas who the maker was?75dc31a57bd938fecbb38a7f90704ad3.jpgfcdb32603d3538fcfbea129db5285f3b.jpg679e528fd0de3b93300bc0b1dfeae242.jpg

Hey I’ve got one that I believe is nearly identical I don’t have the vise in front of me currently and mine is also unmarked. The closet match I could find is the scan marked farmers oval slide vise. Note that it states the 2 1/2in model didn’t have pipe jaws and the jaw tops appear to have the scallop shape to them. Another possible match is ec sterns but note that this model does not show the scallops on top of the jaws.

Thanks for the input Rusty, The meatball looks identical to the Stearns illustration.

The "Oval Slide Vise" was a super common design mfg. by many vise companies for many years.

With that said, Smitty's vise looks very similar to a Clipper Tool Co. vise out of Buffalo, N.Y.

I didn't take a before pic but I can't believe the paint that was hiding on my C1.....should have cleaned it 15 years ago when I picked it up for $30. I always wanted to strip and paint it but I'm satisfied with the factory finish and some battle scars.

That one will clean up nicely.

Good call on that Wilton. Things like that are only original once.

Found this vise with a bench on my local craigslist, the guy said he’d separate them and I could take it for $50. Can’t find much info on it or any like it but it’s in good shape and has removable jaws. It’s gonna get a clean up. 5c5794385957fecd14080a96c90890ca.jpg

That is an unusual label but the general form is common. I’d bet it was cast in Taiwan. To my eye, it’s a copy of the made in England vises bearing Record or Paramo markings. That will make a fine user for you.

noix :
Wow, you spent a lot of time polishing that vise. Impressive. May I ask what steps you took and what tools you used? Started with what? Finished with what?

Here is my York 80 sitting on the shelf with its cousins (or would that be nephews or ???) the Wilton’s.

Here's the Wilton Cadet I picked up earlier this week. It's a Cadet 9140 with 4" jaws from the Chicago era. I haven't started working on it yet other than to ensure everything is there and in working order. The jaws are a little worn but other than a slight depression in the "anvil", it looks like it was well taken care of.

It seems to have been repainted a time or two. I'll have to see how much original paint is left before I decide whether to just clean it up or repaint.

I have a cadet as well. The original orange is pretty wild. I’m on the fence whether to paint it orange or go with another Wilton color like hammered blue or the old standby, Verde Green.

I saw a Cadet painted Chevy Engine Orange. Look at that color. It’s the one I’m considering for mine.

I think Chevy engines from around 1957 to the early 70’s were painted this color.

So you're saying the color peeking through that I thought was faded red is actually orange--and the original color?

Yes
I saw a fair amount of orange on mine before I stripped it.

Nothing says you have to repaint the factory color. If the orange doesn’t look good to you or you think clashes with some other equipment colors in your shop then go ahead and paint it any color you like.

Here are some pages I copied

I've been looking around and found this thread with a post by Kevin Scott (post#36) with a 1963 catalog page touting the Cadet's Brilliant Orange Enamel.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=353915 Sorry, I don't know how to link to a specific post.

Your Chevy Engine Orange is a little more subdued by comparison. I'll have to mull the two over, or as you suggest--paint it something else.

Just because I don't need it doesn't mean I don't *want* it...:)

Of course!
But you never know when you’ll “need” to clamp something like this in order to do some work on it.

No way my Wilton C1 could handle it. :)

Get out of my head, Shiftless!!! Haha. But one of those turned on its side would make a helluva vise stand...

Brought this one home this afternoon, even came with the workbench it was attached to. Very nice condition, the jaws had homemade copper covers on them.

Recently an older gentleman (well older than me and I am 62) named Rudy Pineau sent me a ton of information about Emmert Machinist vises. Here is the basic info about these guys:

#10 - 6" jaws 230 lbs
#4A - 4" Jaws 100 lbs
#6A - 3" Jaws 55 lbs
#5 - 2" jaws 12 lbs
#7 - 1.375" jaws

I am posting these just to clarify the models and their sizes.

I have had a number of #4 and #6. I just acquired a #5...Very cool vises

I picked up this old gal awhile back...but she's a different animal than the ones you have listed. I believe it's earlier than the models you listed Joe...

Mayer. No you have a #6 there but since yours was produced earlier it is a bolt thru the bench and not a bolt on the bench.

The #49 is a part # I believe

I finished up the "shipyard" Columbian 204-1/2. This was an interesting vise. It was stamped with a Navy contract number and "Pipe shop". The contract was for a shipyard in Tacoma, Wa. to build destroyers prior to WWII. Let me tell you this vise is one of the most abused examples I've worked on. The stud for the swivel lock was bent and the base was welded to the static jaw. There is not a square inch of this vise that wasn't covered in welding slag. The logo casting was very rough as well. I take it as a testament to the strength of Columbian vises.

I also finished this small red and white Craftsman 3". Nothing special but very nice and not abused.

New to the Vise world! Keep looking for local ones. Don't know if this is the place to ask the question but here goes. Local guy has this Columbian for $50. Is it worth it? I'm assuming I can get new jaws for it? Thanks
