Ideas for my shop build

After many years of dreaming about building a shop and snooping around GJ, the time is getting very close. I have just started to get my plans drawn up and am calling on my fellow GJ members to put their two cents in. The plan is to be able to park up to a 40’ diesel pusher in the middle bay, storage/workshop in the right bay, and an indoor/outdoor living area that feeds into my backyard in the left bay. The large door on the left will be a full-view glass roll up door that will face my backyard that we are also in the process of finishing with a pool, etc.

Any ideas before I tell the drafter I’m good with the plans would be appreciated. The bathroom is going to have a full length stall shower not a tub shower that is in the plans. I’m hoping to break ground in September/October.

Edit: I have gotten a lot of feedback about the RV being in the middle. The placement of that was decided because it will be my parents RV who will be staying inside the shop a few months out of the year while they are in state. So, it wouldn’t be in there full time and while they are staying in it they will have a nice indoor/outdoor living area with natural light and a pool just outside their RV. The RV will he backed in.

Also, the right side and back side of the shop will just have orchards surrounding it.

Maybe you have a specific motorhome in mind and know the dimensions, but a 12' door sounds really tight to me and 44' could make it tough to get from one side to the other.

My only other thought is to make sure you plumb for a wet bar to go with that pool!

Depending on your use case for the right bay, and what's outside, consider adding windows to make the outside wall on that side a.little more visually appealing.

This was my thought also, the bus is like a wall down the center of the building with no door in it. It wouldn't work for me.

I would suggest that you consider a shower head on the outside of the building for pool users.

I appreciate the desire for Symmetry but I would take the tall bay (and associated gables) and shift to the far side. It still would be a very nice looking building and far more functional inside.

+1 on outdoor bar and shower plumbing

I'm in agreement that the center bay, while a nice architectural element it will make you have to walk around the building to get to the other side. Just to tight. Also, on your pool I would suggest that you run piping in the concrete skirt to act as a radiant heater for the pool. Yes, it heats the pool, but also cools the walkway allowing you to walk on the concrete without burning your feet. You are in the Central Valley!

This is a beautiful building. The RV being in the middle bay will "split" things, but it does keep the symmetry.

There are no "drive through" options in this building. I don't know the property, but making one of these "drive through" may or may not be useful.

Any chance of a shed roof out back or on sides? These are relatively cheap and it's a ton of usable space.

I'd have a drain in that building, you could wash vehicles in it.

RV should have a 3" sewer pipe at the back.

I'd also run 1"-2" conduit under the slab front to back and left to right, at least 4 of them - the "future use" cases are numerous. 1" conduit will take 3/4" PEX (just barely). Going under is much better on a big tall building like this than it is going over...

Beautiful setup. When can I move in?

Bus in the middle is certain to be a PITA after a while.
I would plan for the bus stall at the far right of the plan, raise the roof, whatever it takes. walking around the bus will get old fast.

Edit: according to your plan, nothing about the roof needs to change. Only the door locations and possibly a wall portion

If you do move the bus to the right side, and you intend to drive the bus in forward, consider placing a man door in the right wall located adjacent to the bus' exit door. This will let you easily access the coach without having to pass through the entire building, switching on all the lights, etc.

Ok, in regards to the center bay. I agree it will be in the way to walk around. I kept the first post short, I should’ve explained the design further. My parents will be parking their motorhome there a few months out of the year when they are in state and they want to be able to be close to the large full view door and indoor/outdoor living area and pool.

The right side and back side of the shop face acres of cherry trees so no reason for a drive through option and no one will be looking at the right side that is just a large blank wall.

I will put a sewage drain for the RV.

I’ll definitely look into shed roof ideas.

I do plan on putting a sewer pipe in, maybe it could double as a car washing drain.

I love future proofing so I will do the conduit runs under the slab.

Thanks

Love this idea, I have never heard of it used in this manner. We were going to do solar heating on the roof of the shop for the pool but this sounds much cleaner and functional. I’ll have a discussion with my pool guy.
