Rod, a visit from the Florida Chapter can be dangerous. One at a time and everything is fine. Soon as a second one shows up, chaos ensues. The plastic vomit/poop/oil spill is fine but earmuffs can lead to long nights of explanations and long days of shopping for expensive gifts.
.

Dang, sounds like we developed a reputation.LOL

Congratulations on the newest member of the clan.

Happy great grandpa day Bob. I don't think it will ever happen to me. She's a cutie and at first I was feeling sorry for her with grandpa like you. But really she's really a very lucky young lady.

Bob,

Congratulations on the addition to the family.

Glad the gloves worked out for you, or did they?

I could have sworn this tool was talked about on your thread before.

32065-01-1000.jpg

As far as the single gloves I feel your pain. I used to ski and it would kill me to buy pairs of gloves.

Edit it found it:
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=7727566&postcount=3781
John, thank you, we take healthy babies for granted. I have the first pair of gloves in the glove drawer in the garage. I'm going to put a second pair in the workshop. That panel lift works great on heavy panels but the 1/4" thick piece I was handling was light enough to manage with just a hand-hold. I did use one of my plastic panel handles to carry it down to the shop. My arm is long enough to reach the handle with the 4-by panel under my arm. I bought two of them when they were on clearance at Home Depot or Lowe's
attachment.php

I also get a little faint when I see a pair of gloves for $50+ and only need one. I'm fond of Nitrile gloves because they fit either hand poorly.

Congratulations Bob! She looks cute and healthy:thumbup:
Tapio, thank you! It's good that she takes after her mother's side of the family.
Congrats on the addition. I will say you can keep the Florida heat/humidity.
Kirk, the only thing that makes it OK is that here on the East Coast the Atlantic keeps the temperatures consistent. We don't get a 75*F day followed by a 110*F day. Every day from mid-June to mid-October it's a low of 82*F at night and a high of 91*F in the day.
Dang, sounds like we developed a reputation.LOL

Congratulations on the newest member of the clan.
Craig, the three (or is it five) Flamigos have a well-deserved reputation for harmless mischief. I'm honored to be a socially distant member.

Thanks for the congratulations. My grandfather got to see our two children reach 3 and 4 but my father only knew them to 5 and 6 and never met any of his great-grandchildren. I do feel blessed.

Congrats on the Great Grand Young'un... very cute!
Is it like everyone says? If you'd known how much fun Grand children are... you'd have had them first??

Enjoy!

...D
Thanks FourbyFord and you are right about the Grandchildren. My favorite thing is the revenge. All the stuff the Grandchildren do (and you get to encourage) that makes their parents crazy is the exact same things our children did to us. I feel such joy saying "Really, I can't believe they would do that!" every time it happens.
Congrats Graaaaandpa. Looks just like you. Hope things will calm down by the holidays.

Stewart, bite your tongue. She is pretty like her mother! I also hope we can get this thing under control soon but South Florida seems to have a new pandemic of incurable STUPID-20.
Congratulations on the new family member.
Thank you John!

Andrew, you never know. Someday a young person carrying a baby could knock on your door and say "You don't know me but my mother...."

Don't feel sorry for her. Her parents love her and are already giving excuses why we can't see her in person. I was glad they had a safe hospital ward to go to.

I managed to install one of the drawers under a workbench. It's the Mistake#1 drawer and it's the perfect size to fit under the newish rolling bench. I bought six pair of 22" full extension slides so I can make a cabinet full of drawers in the future. For now the one shallow (2-3/8") drawer will organize some of the measuring tools in the workshop. I need to find a decent piece of scrap wood to make a face for the drawer.
attachment.php

A lot of this stuff was just sitting on benches or scattered between multiple drawers. It will be nice to be able to open one drawer, knowing the speed squares are all there. The reason I have five speed squares was never being able to find any of the ones I already had and it was easier to buy another than put them all in one place.

So did you clear things out from below the drawer or did you screw in the support sides from the top?

You could have 20 speed squares in that drawer, they still won't be were you need it. I am like that too, can't find it, time for a new one. You will find the older ones when you go to put the new one away...

I mist say Bob, your drawer looks nice. :) I don't comment on another's man drawer, EVER.

Congrats on the new addition. Sorry to hear about your Rona scare. But now you have the storm to worry about. Charge up your batteries and open the hurricane cabinet. Good luck.

Nice Collection of squares Bob!
I probably only have 3 speed squares, but then there is the 4 t squares, 3 adjustable machinist's squares, and who knows how many tape measures. Probably 20 tape measures, and I can never find one. Does anyone know their favorite habitat to hide in?

John, all the stuff under the bench is on wheels so it got moved. The right side support is screwed into the 4"x4" legs and the left side support is screwed into the top diagonally. When I build the new bench that drill press will relocate so I may build a whole stack of drawers in that space.

I bought two new framing squares last year. One is steel and I bought it because the markings on my old one were hard to read (rusty) and then came across an aluminum one on sale. The big adjustable T-square is also aluminum. My storage space should be more than adequate but there's a mentally challenged old man who keeps buying stuff.

I'm kinda proud of my drawer but it's embarrassing how shallow it is.
Congratulations, Bob!
Thank you Tim!

Craig, I do all my surfing from an adjustable office chair wearing very unattractive outfits. Absolutely no one wants to see those pictures.

LOL... We've all been there with some tool/item, unfortunately.

Mark, thanks for the kind words. I feel like this 12-step program rarely gets past step 2:

  1. Admit we are powerless...
  2. Believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity...
  3. Decide to turn our will and our lives over to...
That third one sounds like someone is coming for my stuff and I quit the program.

Hey, I think one of those is my missing speed square !
John, I don't see your name on it. I also don't see my name on any of them so you could be right. I'd send it back to you but when I opened the drawer they were all gone again.
Congrats on the new addition. Sorry to hear about your Rona scare. But now you have the storm to worry about. Charge up your batteries and open the hurricane cabinet. Good luck.
Hi Jim, good to see you here again. I still haven't gotten results from last Sunday's test but I feel fine. Palm Beach County is finally taking this pandemic seriously. We received a weird, thick envelope in the mail yesterday. It had no name in the address area but it was from the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners. Enclosed were four masks and a "Stronger Together" note.

As usual, I'm watching the storm closely. As you know, we get tropical storm force winds from normal Florida thunderstorms so I don't do a lot until there is a good chance for hurricane force winds. The map, as of 8:00 this morning shows Boca Raton right on the southern edge of the Hurricane Warning.
attachment.php

I've been watching the National Hurricane Center to see what Isaiais is doing. The site has links to NOAA satellite images. One of them is a loop from GOES-East - Sector view: Caribbean - Sandwich. The 120 hour loop shows the storm breaking up and reforming but it seems to be heading north, although the NHC is predicting a northwest track.

Thanks for coming back Ronjon1190! I forgot about my adjustable squares. Now I wonder where they are. It is also quite possible I have had 20 tape measures but many of them seem to have gone to that farm upstate where my childhood pets went. I caught myself telling my wife the thing she lost was where she used it last so that's probably where some of my tape measures are hanging out. Trying to remember where that habitat is located is giving me a little headacche. Where did all those bottles of aspirin go?

Jim, I don't post on many threads. It takes a memory flashback that reminds me of a solution or just something I found too funny to pass up. I really do appreciate you stopping by.
Wow “free” masks, nice. Keep us posted if they send out extra ballots. lol

Stewart, pretty sure they bought those masks with my money. Not a great return on my investment. They do send two ballots to our house, one for me and one for SWMBO. I always mail back extra copies in case one or two get lost.

I am usually very cautious about hurricanes and err on the side of more is better. After putting most potential missiles away, I went back in the house Saturday to see what the storm was doing. To me it looked like it was breaking up and had deteriorated to a tropical storm. In this part of Florida that's a normal string of afternoon thunderstorms that last a little longer than usual.

Went to bed without disassembling the carport or putting up shutters. Went outside around midnight and it was just a breezy and warm night. Woke up Sunday morning and walked around the yard. The carport hadn't budged (I did tie it down a little).
attachment.php

I found a piece of palm frond that had broken off and fallen and it looks like a dead one is about to fall as well.
attachment.php

Then I found the carnage in the dog yard. A bush blew over!
attachment.php

My camera lens is fogging up because it is 89*F and 125% humidity. When I looked at the other side of the bush I found the problem. The notched fence board I was using to hold the bush up fell down when the bush waved in the breeze. The two main roots were preventing the bush from falling toward the fence but there were no roots to keep it from going the other way.
attachment.php

Spent an hour or two cutting the bush up and taking three wagon-loads across the street for the yard waste pickup today. I have slapped up some plywood from the shed along the bottom of the fence to keep the Bird Dog of Alcatraz from escaping but obviously I have another big fence job in my future.

Glad you didn't get the "bad stuff." A frond or two and a bush seems to be a better rate than what I've seen on the television in the past!

After 6.25" of rain last week we were greeted with temps in the mid 70s this weekend and today/tomorrow. Unseasonably cool for August in Kansas, and is keeping the humidity we've had for the last month tolerable!

Hey Bob,

Glad to hear there was only a minor rearrangement of a couple things in your yard. Could've been worse...

I certainly don't envy you having to deal with that humidity. We're more humid in Idaho than here in Wyoming... that said, if it's warm and sunny and we're approaching 50% (or higher... God forbid) I'm looking for relief... lol

Good thinking on mailing the extra copies. It would be a shame if any would be misplaced. Never can be too careful!

As they say in Chicago... Vote early, vote often!

Always a good thing, no damage or minimal disturbances

Steel guy was here earlier to measure up for my carport roof steels.

Seems he was happy with cubic meter foundations on the free standing posts.

Still wants to add more steel though.

Congratulations to the growing family! And good thing that the hurricane lost it strength.

I am happy I am in the cold North. We will get about 25-27°C (78-81°F) for some days. That is to hot for me, at least we don't have that humidity so i will be able to work outside when the sun is away.

Marc, we've been lucky for 15 years. Having concrete roof tiles,100 feet of shadowbox fencing and an aluminum screen enclosure blown up was bad but we still had a house and its contents.

It has been raining almost every day here for weeks. It rained more after the storm passed than it did before and during the storm itself. I had hoped the temperature would drop with the tropical storm but it was just hot and windy all night. Got up yesterday to all the windows in the house wet on the outside. I took this photo a little after 11:00 yesterday morning. The sun came up around 7:00 and beat on the sliding glass doors for four hours. Still didn't get rid of the condensation on the side protected by a screen. The house is 76*F so the dewpoint outside had to be in the 80s and staying there through the morning. My T-shirt was soaked just looking outside.

Fourbyford, I'll be thrilled if all the storms do what this one did.

I've seen 50% humidity a few times. Usually after a long drought in the winter.

This is Florida. We are famous for our election process. We don't worry about fraud but incompetence ensures something will go wrong. Hanging Chads anyone?

Stewart, Jasmine is probably part Rat and part Meerkat. She can slip through a really tiny opening and spends a lot of time digging new Manors.

Rian, thanks for the encouragement. I'm not real lazy but I do enjoy a break from disaster recovery every once in a while.

Steel guys think about steel like surgeons think about surgery. Like hammers think about everything else -- whatever it is, the solution is to hit it and hit it hard.
Bob, Glad to hear that you weathered it with little damage.
Thanks John, I'm glad too. I know Liane was thinking that bush could use a pruning. Removing it was a better solution for me.

Patrik, thank you and thank you for stopping by.

Like you, I was always happy in the cold North. My 43% Swedish DNA is not happy in the heat but my 43% arthritic joints are less miserable. I was happy to fall asleep in the snow in my youth but now I don't even put ice in my drinks.

We took a Dragon Fruit cutting from a neighbor's palm tree more than 10 years ago and have been getting more and more fruit every year. It starts as a beautiful flower and grows into the red fruit.
attachment.php

I cut them in half and spoon out the meat. Lots of tiny seeds and a sem--sweet flesh. Liane panicked a little when she found out about the storm so we have a lot of Dragon Fruit to eat.

Dragon Fruit.

Got introduced to it in 2005 in Thailand on an incentive trip I had won.

Never stopped liking them for their quirkiness and taste.

I think you are very privileged and had I come to visit you guys, it would have blown my mind if you picked and served it at breakfast.

Rian, it's a very different fruit. So mild it's almost tasteless but a pleasant level of sweetness. I'll do my best to have a few ready for your breakfast when you come. In your shoes I would be at or near Dennis's place or Andy's Old Iron Farm. Or Don's Big Party Garage.

I have made the journey through all 262 pages of your experiences and contributions to date. First, I have to say that you are the man! For many, many reasons. Your outlook, tenacity and work ethic are epic! I presumed that I would skip through pages here and there as there were so many, but you held my attention with both your projects and your superb writing skills. You are one of those rare natural storytellers who can both catch and hold one's attention. That is a gift held by a special few, to be sure.

You work circles around those half your age and probably many 1/3 your age! You have definitely inspired me to get my garage in order once and for all! It is not a one day project by any means, but I made steady progress this week. We do not have near the humidity levels here in Central Texas, but we tend to make up for it with 100 plus degree days! It is forecasted to be 100 or above for a least 8 days straight! I will take this over the humidity any day, though!!!

Congratulations on your first great-granddaughter!

My son's absolute favorite fruit in the world is dragon fruit. At $7 a pound, it is not something we stock every day. It is a treat. He is crazy about it, though and he got a kick out of seeing the pic of yours.

I just wanted to pass along my admiration and respect for everything you do. You are definitely an inspiration to the rest of us mere mortals!!!

Gerry, I only worked on Main Frames for a year. Some doctors decided a person working on moving equipment should have depth perception and two arms so the re-trained me to be a technical writer. Spent nine years documenting the assembly line machines in a component manufacturing facility and then ten years in Boca Raton documenting Series/1 and System/32 & /34 minicomputer hardware and software. My last 10 years was managing the PC software documentation (including a 2-year exile to Australia to establish a documentation department at their Programming Centre).

We tried to acclimate to the Florida heat when we first moved here in 1975. We installed fans in all the rooms and turned the A/C off in the winter. When the 1978-9 oil crisis hit we were worried it would cost us a fortune to air condition the house. We committed to not turning on the A/C until it became unbearable. By June we realized that a dip in the pool before going to bed and having the fan blowing on us all night with the windows open we might make it into July. Other than the times people came to visit, we didn't run the A/C for three straight years. Turned it back on when we realized how much of our clothing was being ruined by mildew. Also got a couple of promotions with big raises at the same time electric rates stabilized. Installed a window A/C unit in the wall of the garage that year and have had one ever since. The first improvement I made to our second Florida home (the one we're still living in) was a 115V 12,000btu A/C window unit in the garage along with enough R-19 insulation for the 700 square foot ceiling. An A/C unit and insulation went in the shop soon after.

I never had the chance to acquire a card storage cabinet but still have the tool case from my first IBM assignment as a Customer Engineer (fancy term for a repairman in a suit).
