Luckily the seller has no issues with me messing around, in fact they said a neighbor may have a forklift that could lift it if needed. I am not easily embarrassed, I am going to take a chance.

Also found another trailer that I am probably going to buy tomorrow morning, looks like I will be selling the current one!

I think paying to have it towed will keep the owner from wanting to strangle you if something goes wrong. Being quick in and out might make him think to call you if there is something else he wants out of his way.

No faith?

;)

I have just learned that when **** happens, it happens fast, it happens at the worst time, and it makes you look like the biggest idiot. If I have the option of getting the right equipment there I will. I once got a completely destroyed repo car from a dealership. I had my old flat deck trailer that was set up for equipment, not cars. I called a rollback to pick it up and set it on the trailer rather than take an hour to load, and destroying the parking lot. I got 8 more cars from the dealership because I didn't screw things up.

If you are determined to do it all with your own equipment, I would humbly suggest at least test out the procedure in the privacy and relative safety of your own property first.
Do what you’re proposing with one of your current forklifts, work out any kinks, and if everything goes **** up and the hoses all burst on the knuckle boom then nobody needs to hear about it or get hurt.

Check with the company next door if their forklift is up for the job.
If not another vote from me for paying to have it removed, it shouldn't be too much considering you are 15 minutes away and what you paid for them.
Also it will be the quickest because you don't need to fabricate anything / wait for parts & rigging you need to buy and you said they want to get rid of it asap.

BTW "you ****" picking up not 1 but 2 forklifts for $400 !!! I wouldn't have been able to buy a set of forks for that price.

...and factor in the value of your time and the opportunity cost of productive/profitable work that could have been done during the time it takes getting set up for, and actually going to get them.
Make it someone else's problem and invest the time and any savings into locating more Burbs.

I understand, probably the best answer. I need to figure out the weight of the smaller things be, hopefully I can load that one myself without an issue. If I use the neighbors forklift, then I may end up with it stuck on my trailer, so would be better off with paying the ramp truck.

Perfect example of things this morning, I told seller I would be at his place at 5:30 AM, when I arrived at 5:25, he was amazed that I showed up. We discussed the trailer (he was asking $3,500), after looking at it for a bit, mostly crawling around underneath, I told him if he didn't sell it that I would make him an offer. He asked me to just make an offer, so I showed him all the issues that I saw and explained what would need to be done along with the unknowns. After a bit more discussion, we came to an agreement of $1,200, I basically bought the tires and the trailer was free. I will pick it up tomorrow night.

It is a very heavy duty trailer, with a little work it could be an awesome trailer for the long term. normally this style trailer is a 20 ton, I think this one is a 30 ton or better. He is going to try and dig up some more info, it came from his current employer and they have more records. Will be interesting to see what I can make out of the deal, not 100% sure I am keeping it yet.

The tow will be $200, so my price for the forklift just went up. Getting it hauled to the Hill, then I can put it to use in the quonset hut for now.

It is hot or miss, sometimes what seems like a great deal turns out to be not so good. I figure it is like auction stuff, I cost average things and generally do well overall. We just unloaded the forklift at the Quonset hut, now that it is done, I really think it would have been better off at the top of the Hill, oh well, live and learn. I can most likely drag it up there, but it may be that I wait and use Perk to do it, like a maiden voyage of sorts. It runs great, but it smokes pretty good, lots of blow by for sure. Next week I will be listing things for sale, probably advertise it as well. One of the brakes is rubbing, so I will have to investigate that.

It actually drives around really well, I was surprised for sure, I know I could get it stuck in the powdery stuff, but up too it is mostly hard packed all over. It would be stored outside, so I would need to cover it, but that isn’t terrible.

Unfortunately the other forklift is also too heavy for Perk, so I will be doubling the costs, but I may have a buyer for the bigger forklift already.

I am over at the SG trying to get aluminum for the little dump trailer project, no easy way to cut it, 21’ flimsy pieces aren’t going on the roof rack either. I may have an idea, but I clearly see that I need a portable bandsaw dedicated for the SG, so I found a nice used one and ordered it on eBay. Next time I won’t have this issue!

Best use ever for a crappy extension ladder.

4ff7963bf8d2b7eceaaf37ff2580a834.jpg

Nice!

Does your 'Burb have the bolt on front recovery hook? I knew someone who removed that and bolted on a welded up a plate/pole/arms to hold the front of the over long roof load. They used it a lot so it wasn't a one off jerry rig. They also had a rear receiver mount one too.

I know you have this load all ready, but you can file the idea in the back of your mind for the next one.

Sorry it didn't work out. Glad getting the ramp truck worked though.

Still a small cost to avoid breaking any equipment due to overloading AND it is done, they are at your place. Sounds like you will recoup your money pretty fast too. sounds win/win.

The ladder worked really well, stuff hardly bounced around at all, looked decent too. I will be using this truck again, that was 24’ angle iron that acted like a wet noodle before using the ladder.

Can’t seem to get it to work on my phone, but my imagination is making an interesting image.

Picking up the second unit soon, ramp truck got delayed due to an accident cleanup. We got it all outside using my booster pack, pretty impressed it did as well as it did. They also gave me a little lifting boom adapter and the charger.

Strouty, I hope you guys made it through the storm ok.
Out of curiosity, what does a storm like this do to your tower maintenance schedule?

With the towers and storms, if things are in order there isn’t anything in particular that would need to be done, if things aren’t in order a storm like that will show you what is wrong in a hurry. Most towers are rated to at least 100MPH wind for a certain amount of time, around here they would also factor in ice loading. So a tower properly maintained should be fine in most situations.

All the forklifts have arrived and they are in their proper locations now, meaning the bigger one is up top and the stacker is in the Quonset hut. I need to get a battery into the bigger forklift and adjust the tank straps so the propane tank will be held in place, then I need to get a tarp or figure out how to cover it so the ignition doesn’t get messed up from rain.

Next thing to do is go and get Clark, then bring it back to the Hill, I still need to figure out if it will be able to drive up and down the hills with a load, if Clark can, I may buy a Clark Two. ;)

I also have to pick up the trailer I bought yesterday, should be doing that around 5:30 tonight, I need to get the magnetic lights all wired up so I am ready to go, not sure if the lights on the trailer work, this way it doesn’t matter.

The producers made me type it, they were looking for more drama, soap opera ratings have been all over the place.

Self proclaimed lurker- and you inspire me. I'm gradually working through the mess of a 100 year old farm and such.

That right there, the ratings thing- That explains more of life RIGHT now than anything else.

FYI- Hanna SUCKED! Don't think for a second that, like the news said, no one lives in South Texas. We're here. Still.

You can’t be a Lurker and post. ;)

Welcome to the show, glad you are still around.

I had to deviate from plans a bit, schedule got too tight, so Clark will have to wait until tomorrow, no big deal, but I didn’t want to try and cram too much in and end up screwing things up. I am getting a battery for the new forklift, not sure what I am going to call it yet? I also wanted to drop a few things off at the SG and make sure there wasn’t any storm damage or issues from all the wind we got last night.

The propane tank is now secured, I measured for the battery, going to try and get the largest one that will fit in there.

Strouty, I can't tell, is that Hyster an automatic or manual? I really like Hyster's hydraulic wet clutch, you can really feather those things.

No sense in naming something you are selling. If keeping it, call it blue, seems easiest to me.

As for the Clark Two, I may be a bit behind but I thought you have a second one already?

Dr, it is an automatic.

XJ, I am pretty sure I am going to keep it for a while, once I run it around a bit, I think it will be very handy for me right now, if it doesn’t have the traction that I think it will, I will be trying to sell it. Probably list it for sale with a high price just to see if there are any takers.

Me happened, what else? I want to try it up too, if it works really well, it will be worth a lot to me for the next few months. The value isn’t going to change much if I use it for a while.

I am back at the Hill, just finished lunch, going to put a battery in Guido (love that name and it matches well!). I found the five foot long forks over at the SG, but they were way out back and I didn’t have the ambition today to get them. I still need to make up the adapter for Perk so I can use the magnetic towing lights.

Guido is definitely not EPA compliant, but passed the upper hill test with flying colors. I even drove around the backside of the shop, it jumped a bit due to uneven ground, made it through and that is what counts. I drove up the ramps to the doors and that seems decent as well, might even be able to drive it inside one bay. Reverse makes you wish you had a gas mask on and one of the belts was squealing like crazy, no brakes, and some clunky noises from within the wheels, otherwise Guido is perfect!

Here is the backside of the shop that I drove around, camera makes it look more flat than it is.

Will have to dig out the longer forks at some point, assuming Guido earns his keep. ;)

This was the little mast/hook attachment that came with the other lift.

The mag lights would definitely be a plus when getting that new trailer.

Have you ever had an ice issue on one of the towers?

That is great that Guido made it around, ***** about the fumes and squeals tho.

How soggy does that ground get after it rains?

Many years back, when I had no need for one,I was given three forklifts in the span of 3 months. One was a stand up electric, that had a bad (hole in it) battery, two were Clark propane models like Guido. I was at a gas station with one of them, and a guy pulled in driving an El Camino. We started talking, and he said he worked for a forklift company and to bring it by tomorrow. I did. They bought all three (minus the holy battery) for a really good price, then asked if I had a charger for the electric. I told them I was going to pick it up. They paid me more for the charger than they did for the 3 lifts.

Unfortunately this unit is 24 volts, more common ones are 36 and 48 volt. My other two forklifts are both 24, but this charger is 3 phase. I may be able to sell it, but I already have another one that is the same style. At this point I will most likely sell the orange electric forklift (after I swap the battery out with my OG white one).

The trailer pickup went well, drove it back with the brakes caged since he already had them caged, I figured why risk it when I have an hour to drive. The lights almost all worked, but in the end I had to use the magnetic lights, so I was glad I spent the time making the converter and I even made an extension cable that had to be used too. No pictures, too dark, will post some tomorrow. The hubs were barely warm after the trip home, so I expect the axles are in good condition.
