Brand new here -- but starting a remodel of our somewhat generic suburban garage. Remodel will include pretty mundane improvements - repaint, lighting upgrades, adding a RaceDeck floor, and some theme improvements.

One thing we'd like to do for theme is add some large format (think 24" x 36" or 30" x 40") road photos and dealer showroom posters to the walls. On the order of two or three photos and a showroom poster or two.

Garage is attached but not climate controlled. We live in Southern Louisiana, so assume it will be hot and humid most of the year with some temperate to cold spells. (Cold by La standards is typically no lower than 25 deg F.) I recognize that for any paper posters or photos, they will need to be protected in some form.

Does anyone have experience with hanging posters / photos in similar conditions?
  • The dealer showroom posters are glossy paper, so I'm debating between waterproof exterior frames such as this (**1**) or having them laminated in some form.
  • For the photos, I figure I could use cheaper frames and have them printed on exterior rated materials ((**2**)Generic google hit on outdoor posters), or use standard poster printing and the waterproof frames.

Anyone have experience with either of these scenarios? What worked well? What was cost effective?
Any recommended vendors for poster printing of uploaded photos? Or recommended vendors for printing of outdoor rated posters?

Many thanks in advance,

Philip

(still too new to post links, so sorta URL's below)

(**2**) www_power-graphics_com/ printing-for-outdoor-use/posters.html

(Neither of these attempted links constitute advertisement, just examples of things I'm considering.)

My posters are protected by the inexpensive poster frames we buy at Michales.

Thanks for the input. :)

Get them laminated or frames with glass.

Thank you as well. :)

Our average humidity is 78%, and we get ~63 inches of rain a year. I suspect it would have to be lamination to be sure. If I can get a plastic board backing for the posters, the glass might do the trick.

After a hurricane a few years back, we lost power for a week. The glass framed photos and posters inside the house distorted and wrinkled from the humidity. When the power returned, the AC dried them out slowly and many went back to being flat.

We had a flash condensation problem a few years ago when I opened the big doors on a warm and humid early Spring morning. The interior from the cold slab and the chilly night temperatures was lower than the dew point of the morning air entering from the outside. Caused condensation over the entire floor and everything else in the garage.

However our approx 12 x 20 photos mounted behind cheap Michaels glass frames were unaffected.

Get them foam-backed or like another poster said... laminated. Any proper frame will decrease the damage from humidity, but not stop it completely.

Great data point! Thank you, Glen. That's 2 votes for glass, and I'm thinking the same.

And I appreciate the thoughts on foam board. I was thinking the same w/ a plastic / foam backing board.

I have one showroom poster that's a bit more of a collector's item, so I might just get a single waterproof frame for it.

Otherwise, for the rest of the photos with the foam and glass, they should be fine.

Appreciate the input.

Some matting seals against glass to protect from humidity. If you are willing to have your stuff matted, talk to the framer, it will definitely last longer.

I have a bunch of posters that have been in my garage for years. Some are in nice, but cheap, frames with glass. Many are in the very cheap poster frames from Wally World. Others are just stapled to cabinet doors. None are showing any damage from humidity or heat/cold. The ones hung when they were new are still perfect. The older ones that were already weathered haven't continued to deteriorate.

Memphis gets pretty darn humid. Not the like-breathing-underwater humidity of LA...

If getting things printed you could do metal prints. Expensive as hell but really cool at the same time. I did a test one for my wife and she loved it.
