We ordered an RV awning and after install up next up was finding some good tires.

I was looking for a solid AT a little larger and ended up with 265/75/16 BTG AT KO2s.

First ‘real’ project was finding a solution to the bike rack interfering with the rear door swing as we enter the back of the van regularly.

I decided to pull the factory step bumper and fabricate a much stronger one that sits higher and allows for a swing away carrier and tow points. I mounted it directly to the class 4 hitch with 3/8x 3” flat bar.



After getting the 2x6x3/16” tube bumper dry fit it was time to plan the swing-away. I ordered a kit from EMS Off-road through Amazon. 1-1/4” spindle.

Next ‘real’ project was the ladder. After the full build which includes solar and roof vents we will build the platform roof rack which will help protect the solar panels and allow us to lay up on the roof to stargaze.

I started with 1” nominal aluminum pipe in the .138”ish range. I don’t exactly recall. Lay up, bending, and mitering.


Welding, painting, and install.

I read the x-day as an ouch, this is gonna hurt. How far from the vehicle were you? Anyone else with you when it happened?

What’s mods have you done to the interior of the Sprinter?

Local trail with 2 buddies, one who’s an EMT. Could’ve been much worse.

My Wife and I just finalized our plan for the interior of the van. We are working with a van outfitter for a large portion of it. Details to follow.

Today’s project was adding a modular carrier to the swing-away on my rear bumper.

This is the 1/2 way point where I’m checking height. I have the rest done but no pics yet.

I added a hard stop and a locking pin to hold the carrier ‘open’ when parked off-camber.

Just need to add the deck plate.

No more bike injuries!

These past 2 years have just disappeared so fast! I sold the Safari. We had 2 deaths in the family which triggered a really rough time and a bunch of extra travel on top of our usual trips and activities. We had our youngest boy start school and that transition was a struggle. And of course covid wrecked our social life.

Hopefully we are now on the other side of most of that.

We were able to still get in a lot of our usual outdoor activities and weekend trips; also made it to AK, WA, UT, WY, AZ, SD, MN, WI.

My Wife and I finished our Stone patio. I’ve been able to “complete” the Shop and Van, and most of my “new” truck; but I’m sure there will forever be little things here and there. We also purchased a used raft and trailer that I customized and restored.

There have been some large tool additions as well including a Mill, Lathe, industrial belt sander, 3-in-1 sheet metal tool, tubing bender and plasma table with new plasma cutter.

I will attach some photos of said happenings.

It really does…….

My youngest Son was having a hard time with his Afterschool program so we pulled him out of it which shortened my work days. Totally worth it though. He has been much happier home more.

We were fortunate to find probably the last reasonably priced house in our area for my Mother In-law who moved to town 2 years ago.

It’s a fixer-upper so my project list keeps growing……
