Round glass fuse

I have a house built with the old school round glass fuses, I needed my welder up and going in my garage so I ran 10-3 wire to the fuse box and wires the neutral to the bar, white to one fuse slot, black to another section, wired up the outlet in the garage, have 110 on both legs, and ground.

Good got that and fuses are good, plugged in the 220 welder, won’t turn on **** something messed up in the move, I checked all the fuses all good so figured time to buckle down and just buy a new welder got it home tonight plugged it in and exact same thing, so here I go checking fuses and voltage at the outlet and cords (not taking the new one apart) same thing as before.

I then take the new one to the shop next door, borrow their 220 plug and new one fires right up and runs perfectly. PLEASE someone somewhere tell me what I’m missing?

Tomorrow’s list of things is take the old welder next door and see if it works, which I’m betting, and taking the new one back, please anyone have any ideas?

If you dont have 240 across the 2 fuses take your meter a d find 2 fuses fed from seperate sides of panel, then you should have 240

You probably have both fuses feed from the same leg of the incoming power. Make sure that you have 240v across plug your using. Each leg will measure 120v to neutral but not 240 across the two hot legs.

Yes 240 totaling in the outlet, green 30 amp fuses and yes 240 coming out of the box

You actually measured 240v? We don't care about voltage to ground since the welder doesn't use it.

You could also test voltage with the welder turned on to rule out a high resistance connection.

don't just start doing stuff willy nilly here. do you have 240 volts across the 2 hots? probably not by the sounds of it. don't just move a wire to another random fuse.
you need to have them on opposing phases to get 240 .

Please don't feel like you are inadequate. I have made the same error when I was learning about electrical wiring.

Yes
nadogail is right.
None of us were born knowing all of this stuff. We learn from those who went before and each other. And we learn from experience. Hopefully none of the experiences are too costly. :shocking:
