Just got on this thread today. OUTSTANDING OUTSTANDING OUTSTANDING.
After the 55 you are going to need a 50's pickup with Texaco color and logo on the doors. Just adding my .02 cents. Frank

All I got to say is wow. I love Texaco. That is why I am going to base my Hotrod shop off a 40s or 50s style Texaco Service station.

Just read through all 15 pages and I love the way it turned out. This is the type of shop I want to eventually build

Maybe someday I'll have something half this cool to work in!!

Hi Roger.
Nick here from Australia. Just read though this, and what a fantastic shop you have there...

How about adding a driveway bell for giggles: http://www.miltonsbells.com/

Congrats and enjoy, you have put great effort into this build.

Just wanted to say thanks to the guys that complemented the magazine feature.

Plus, to any of you guys that may have missed this, the magazine is supposed to be on the newsstands until April 20th.

Look what my wife did for me! She had my magazine feature framed. I know this was expensive for her to have done.

I bought the mag and showed it to our realtor to show her some examples of what I'd like to do with the property we've found and she was really impressed, especially with yours, Roger. After we were done looking at the property we eventually put an offer on, she asked to see the magazine again and turned straight to your article. I think she liked it.

I like what your wife did with the article, too. It came out really nice!

Thanks to all of you guys for the complements!

And, Chad, did you get that property you made and offer on? Will you have enough space to build the shop you want and can we expect a start-to-finish build thread like mine?

Just a note to add to this.
All my local newsstands around don't have any copies of the magazine left. However, you can still get one from the Wood Magazine website. I just ordered 3 more copies since I had given the ones I had away to friends.

We're waiting on the bank to approve the offer. Its a short-sale, so they have to do their thing first. Both the listing agent (who specializes in short-sales) and my realtor are very positive about the result, so here's hoping. Its a 2-1/2 acre lot outside of city limits, so its perfect for a shop. Several other homes in the neighborhood already have hobbie buildings, too, so it should be no problem. Unfortunately, it will be a couple years before I can even think of building. I'm going from a small (20x24) 2-car to a nice 3-car with high ceilings (read '4-post lift'). I may have to do a thread on puting that right, though.

Just found this thread today. What a excellent project.

Being a previous owner of a Texaco station myself, it really hit the spot for me.

You've done an outstanding job, in capturing both a great place to have events and hang out, while having a great shop to continue working on future projects/toys too.

Congrats on the Magazine article and for having a wonderful wife, who jumps right in there with you.

I'm going to go back now and check out your others link. :bounce:

I saw that magazine on the shelf, I thumbed through it and did not buy it because I have seen all or at least most of the photos here in garage journal.

Very nicely done!

Wish we still had some of my Grand fathers stuff from his old convenience store. Had a couple pumps, 4' tall Pegasus, etc..

Hi Roger,
Have to take my hat off to you for making it all come together. The kids or the neighborhood must just stare in amazement. With your permission I would like to build something similar to what you have done and will PM you about it. Once again congratulations you have done what others only dream about.

Roger,

First off, sign me up as another that will build one just like yours. My girlfiriend and I are selling our respective homes and will find land or a home in an area where we can build a big garage. I think there was some other details such as getting married but all I heard was a bigger garage.

I tell you all this because she and I have really enjoyed seeing your build and now she says we need one of those. Like so many before me, I want to say thanks for the story, pics and the just plain enjoyment of reading this thread. We wish you the best with your great build and hope for many happy days there for you and yours.

Thanks again from us as well as all the other readers here.

I've already decided to go with a 24' X 48' building with either a 10' or 11' ceiling. I will also have the covered drive through area to keep with the 50's style gas station theme.]

If you don't make at least one bay high enough for a lift with a vehicle on it (about 12 ft minimum) you are really shooting yourself in the foot. Even if you don't think you will ever have a lift, you may change your mind later, or be forced for whatever reason, to sell and move.

Either make the building tall enough, or put in trusses that will give you the room. Height is a good thing. If you don't have A/C it will give you a place for the heat to rise to.

I have just bought a 4 acre place that I'm going to move to when I retire.
I am going to build a nice shop there in the next couple of years.

I saw this drawing of an old style gas station that I thought would make a cool looking shop.
It would be kind of like having a museum and a usable workshop.

Has anyone here built anything like this?

GasStation2a.jpg
we have one in port huron that looks EXACTLY like that. i believe someone still works out of it. i'll get some pics sometime

My shop is complete. So, the point is moot now. But, I will explain.

I prefer not having one. The decision was not based on cost at all. Even if there had been no extra cost, I still would have made the same decision. I've never had a lift in my own garage or shop nor have I wanted one. I have worked on a lot of cars through the years doing a lot of stuff and never have I said to myself that "I wished I had a lift for that".

Early in my career, I worked at a company (for about 10 years) that owned a resort with a gas station that had lifts. I had the privilege to use it at any time I wanted (after hours but any time during the off-season). I did use it quite a bit for the 69 Camaro I had at the time. I also worked on company cars, friend's cars and even my boss's car in there too. So, it's not like I don't know what I'm missing. I didn't use it because of the lift but rather because it was a convenient place to work on the car as I didn't own a house during the time.

For me, there are no advantages to a lift over large high-quality jack stands. I prefer working on my back versus overhead. Plus I have the big advantage of not having a lift take up space when I'm not using it or having it in the way of what I need to do when the car is on it.

From my perspective, having a lift in a home shop is way overrated. I can sure see it if a person needs the storage for an extra car but for ease of changing the oil, I think a pit is more convenient than a lift. I did give a pit thought, but decided against that too. Again, a good floor jack and jackstands are just too easy to use and put away when you are done.

So, I won't change my mind later. And as far as selling someday being a factor, it's not at all. I built exactly what I wanted. Heck, a buyer is just as likely to make my shop into a guest house or something else. Nothing I'm doing with this house, property and workshop has been done with resale a consideration. My wife and I retired here and this is it until, god forbid, we have to go to a nursing home.

I'm inspired, with no money.

I really don't want to sell off all my shares and RRSP's just to build something like this, even if its the most amazing garage I've seen.

well done.

Roger,

How 'bout an update on the floor? How is it holding up? Any regrets or changes in what you have done with it? Just looking to see what I'll need to do for a floor when I build my 'Roger-age."

Sure.

The floor is holding up beautifully. I am really glad that I opted for the EnduraShield 2254 (urethane) versus using the BondTite 1101 (epoxy) for the top clearcoat finish.

The BondTite 1101 that I used as a clear topcoat on my workbench has yellowed a little under the windows.

The urethane will never yellow and is super hard. It's been a year and a half now that the shine is still great.

It will not hold up to welding though. I got a few burn marks that I will have to touch up. I put a blanket down but some splatter burned through to the floor. I should have used something more heavy duty to protect the floor. But better yet, I should do my welding outside or in my other workroom where I don't care about the floor.

I have really abused the floor in the workroom where I put down a cheaper non-cleared epoxy (Epoxy Coat) at about 15 mils thick. I've done a bunch of welding, metal cutting, furniture finishing and all kinds of spray painting in there. For the abuse I've given it, it's holding up well. But it's not pretty anymore. Of course, that room was intended to be abused.

So, I can say for a fancy epoxy floor where you are going to use flakes and clear. The Wolverine system is a fantastic way to go. But I would absolutely recommend upgrading to their urethane topcoat.

Go to AlphaGarage for Wolverine products. It's the only place you can get it.

Just for interest...

Here's what I got going now:

Workroom, removing body from frame on '55 hardtop:
(You can see the red overspray on the floor from painting the gas pump.)

Main area, taken later after blasting and painting frame and installing engine:

Presently, I am still doing some work to the body in the workroom. I need to finish some more work on the quarter panels and paint the firewall before I mate the frame and body back together.

Nice work on the 55 Roger:thumbup:

The Pop machine caught my eye in the back ground also. My dad has a Older Coke machine that I would like to restore to working condition.

GREAT looking shop and ideas. Love it. I have a nice size shop, its 4200 sq ft, however the wife ended up with the 650 sq ft living sidee, which is a mother in law unit. Its now her art studio.

However, I have a gas island that I have used as such for over ten years. I have not yanked the pumps and restored them too nice for the outside.

I am trying to figue out a way to hake an overhang out front and come off of the roof and build over the island. I am not opposed to taking out the current island and building a nicer one. I have a few old pumps to restore nice if there is an over hand/ cover. However I am thinking only like 12 feet or so, because I have a drop off.

I too have long been into the gas pumps, coke machine ect and have a 40-50s style diner inside the home. My issue is trying to decide what to build over this.
'
YOU SEEM PRETTY CREATIVE, ANY IDEAS? My original shop was a 1700 plus sq ft front shop, which youc an see. I later attached a 50x50 to the back, which you can kind of see in one pic. I WANT an overhang in front of the area on the left which has the small island. I hasve a few strated props. My other issue si I have 175 acres in Cambridge Idaho and am considering moving sooner or later and doing it bigger.

Thanks for the ideas, now I have to change up the front to give it the gas station look.

Dave
