Changed some tie rods, had the dog supervise.

The dog's mouth is open - I hope he is telling you not to put your legs under the lower control arm even if the car is on stands - even more so if only a jack is holding it up.

Today, and yesterday, and every other week since May. I've teleworked in the garage.

I've gotten no major projects knocked out, but my bike chains are clean, well lubricated and I've push an innumerable volume of objects back and forth from the workbench, to the shelves to the workbench. I've sorted some parts while on conference calls etc.

I'm not looking forward to moving back into the basement when the detached garage gets too cold for an 8 hour day.

Played around with the components for a solar powered door for the chicken coop. Hope to install it Saturday so I don't have to go out each morning to let the ladies out and then again in the evening to put them to bed.

Will still have to go out to feed and collect eggs, but that can be done at any time (and usually before I crawl into bed and the wife asks if I closed up the coop)

Got my new-to-me mill off the ground and mounted to its table. The cabinets I found fit great under the table and this shows a before and after paint picture. Moved a half a ton of stored **** out and back and will have to sort it at some point.

Lol, yes he was. Gotta save the plums.

The car was on jack stands, tires under the car, and I also had the jack propped up to the frame. I never try to fully go under the car but sometimes you have to/forget not to.

Earlier this week I posted a video of a repair on project big MF'er. In the video I replace a damaged seal on the rear axle. The bad seal was not allowing me to properly fill the rear end to the correct operating fluid level. At the end of the video I test the diff lock. It was fun! Probably boring if you are interested in type of repair, but the short clip of the posi traction should be fun for any gear head. Check it out if your are interested and or following along.

Check it out:

The last two days were spent building a deck / front porch on the house. It is a raised 8x16 pressure treated deck. Dad helped kick the project in gear! I am very pleased with the results and happy that it is complete. Build deck.... Check! I think I will be posting a video on it's construction in the future.

Finally started putting color and clear on my project car. Started with the bottom of the hood, trunk lid and a small panel to make sure all was good.

Some quick sort-of-cleaning to get stuff out of the way and workbench top cleaned off. Did the car / truck shuffle to get my truck in to the garage. Hit the mounting bolts for the p/s rack with PB Blaster. Tomorrow the rack, tie rod ends, and hoses are getting replaced. Rack has been leaking.

Looks like an axle seal may be leaking, too. I guess that’ll be next.

Drilled out the center of a couple stainless carriage bolts to replace the bent, cut and damaged ones in the original Guide spot lamps for my 74 FLH.

Did it using the center hole of the press table to hold them in place. Crude set-up yes, but worked.

I am a trail liaison at at one of the local mountain biking parks. I built and installed this teeter totter on one of the trails. Riding surface is 14' long, 14" wide, and 2" thick white oak. Freshly cut, still wet, and north of 300lbs. Base is all 4x4.

Thinking I may need to do this job on my 2015 Ford Expedition. Starting to make some noise back there. Not sure whether to go with Moog or SKF on the replacement parts.

Just two projects that were nothing major, replaced the handles and made minor repairs to a new to me workmate. Then I replaced the casters on my first roll away tool chest from 1986, the original casters had finally reached the point that they would not roll but I had a spare set to use.

Got the rack and hoses out. Found the U joint in the steering shaft was roached, so that came out too.

Got the new shaft and hoses in, set up the new rack and tie rod ends. Got stuck trying to feed the new rack in to place. It’s a 4x4, so there’s not much clearance.

Working in the driveway, I quit at dinner time. It’s dark out, and I don’t like disturbing the neighbors at night. I’ll get back at it tomorrow.

Bolted a HF motorcycle wheel chock to the opposite end of my Handy Lift.

Once I strap the rear of the bike down on either side so it can't fall over, I'll release the front wheel from the Handy Lift's main wheel vise, lift the front a little with my scissor jack and remove the front wheel to replace the tire and tube.

Had an eventful afternoon. I planned to pull the old aluminum storm windows off the two rear kitchen windows because the wife is sick of them leaking when it rains and making spots all over the glass. I was just going to pull them off, clean all the old hardened sealant off, and reinstall them with putty tape (old mobile home trick). Anyhow, I pulled the first storm off, and didn't even need to unscrew it. ALL of the window wood was rotten. The sill was still in good shape, but all 3 other sides were shot. So I ended up pulling all the original exterior trim boards and replicating them in the garage. At least it gave me a reason to fix my band saw and fire up my new-to-me miter saw.

The house is from the 1860s, and has asbestos siding over the original clapboard siding, so it takes some time and finesse to work with projects like this. You can't really cut asbestos tiles (and you wouldn't want to anyway). So you kinda have to make everything new fit to the eyeballed-angles of yesteryear and 160 years of settling and weather damage. Good times.

So something that should have taken 30 minutes took all day. But at least it's done right. Hopefully it'll last another century or so.

Yesterday I spent a few hours trying to feed the new rack in the way the old one came out, through the driver side wheel well. I had given up at dinner time.

Today, went back to it. Fed it in from the bottom, and it was in place in under ten minutes.

Bolted everything back together, refilled and burped the system.

While it was in the air anyway, I changed the oil, and greased the ball joints and drive shafts.

Cleaned up and put the tools away.

Need to call tomorrow to get scheduled for an alignment, and return the old rack for my core charge.

I raised the garage track and am about 3/4 of the way through putting in Chamberlain jackshaft garage door opener. It all works, well I can hit the button on the opener and it raises and lowers. I don't think it likes it that I haven't installed the lock or the cable tension safety switch, do the wireless remote and wall remote aren't working. Should be able to figure it out tomorrow.

I was going to jury rig the center pull opener, but the wife kept saying why don't you pay somebody to do all the work on the door? After I got the tracks altered and working I was looking at the next step, which was going to involve me "engineering" the center pull up high and out of the way with a long lever bar, and I decided a nice middle road between me doing it all and paying someone to do it all was to buy the jackshaft opener.

Money spent, time saved, better solution.

Worked with my 17-year son and did some maintenance on his 2007 Explorer 4.0: Belt tensioner, idler pulley, belt, spark plugs and wires. It fired right up after we were done.

Its Thanksgiving up here and we needed a larger dining room to practice responsible social distancing for our family dinner.

It was good motivation for me to spend much of the week doing a thorough and overdue cleanup.

Installed the new rear leafs in my son's XTerra today finally. We installed the front suspension a couple weeks ago.

Love those clown shoe cars, very jealous of the rare bird. Maybe it's a Brent thing [emoji6]

I've been stealing steevo vibes trying to have a go at a workbench change. Density under the bench. The current under bench space can do a lot more for me.

Here's what I'm working on:
Non-functional hydraulics on a 1955 Ford tractor.

Accumulated moisture as shown in the sump I believe was the initial cause of the problem.

The control valve was stuck in its bore, but cleaned up reasonably well and slides nicely now.

I also will remove the cylinder and piston, clean them up and replace the O-ring and the leather seal.

Ain't antiques fun?
