I may have missed it, but what recessed lights did you end up going with in the house? Are you happy with their dimming abilities, and what dimmers did you use?

I can picture your driveway lights lighting up as you drive up the driveway.

but don't understand the weather station location - it needs to be in free space, away from any building

I haven't posted on your thread before but I'm wondering where the driveway goes after it passes the house. It seems to head off down the hill.

Yea, it curves a few times. I have a video of my drone flying down it.. I'll dig that up.

when does the year round integrated christmas (not race) lights and self installing decorations update come?

The stuff you are doing is just insane. If only our govts would have as much forethought into our country as you do into your home, we would be set.

Well done sir.

Oh yea, christmas is the best excuse for lots of cool lights!

I will look for you on the air. A bit of a haul from FL, but 160m has been open that way the last few nights, and should be getting better.

73, WE4S

K7JBS... FL is indeed a ways, but sometimes the paths just work!

Somebody is hoarding wheels and tires.
Very nice build!

Yea, I seem to collect them!

I ended up using the CE ones, which are sold by Home Depot. They are adjustable color temp, and so far they have been working great.. All of my light switches are Homeseer ZWave Dimmers (which I believe are made by GE). So far so good, and the CE Leds dim almost all the way down.

Thanks... the idea of the tracking lights just always seemed cool.

Indeed it does.. but for now I had a post there, and it can still get water and temp. Once I get a real ham radio tower setup I'll have somewhere better!

Don't let the sequential driveway lights die, unless your driveway is within 30 degrees of an instrument approach you shouldn't have an issue. Slow the lights down so they don't have the same rate as approach lights.

By the way, in looking at you living room, I have probably the same tripod you have for the floor lamp. Mine has a mountain transit on it and sits in my office in California.

Question concerning the driveway gate. Will the gate be able to swing with a few inches of ice on the pavement? See page 35, post 687 for reference.

Hmm... Interesting. If there was a lot of snow, I suspect you may be correct that there will be problems. At my previous house I typically opened the gate if we were going to have snow (given that snow here in Portland is a few day event in most cases). Something to think about!

Speaking of shop and of cars.. I replaced my old Yukon (08 Denali) last week with a new 2021 Suburban Z71. This is the first suburban with an IRS. I'll be curious to see how it drives and tows.

I also replaced my wife's Volvo XC90 with a 2021 BMW X5 x45e, which is an interesting car in the 'plug in' space. It is a plug in hybrid, but it can drive about 40 miles on the battery. In previous years the plug in version could only do 15-20, and most people only saw 12-15. 40 miles is more than the typical day driving for my wife, and so far it has been working well. Of the first 300 miles on the car, 260 of them have been all electric. It isn't the range or speed of my Tesla, but it also has a massively better interior.

Since I still need to pull fiber to the gate I setup a wireless link from the house to the gate. It is about 1000ft, but blocked by forest.

The view from the house to the gate location.. the red circle is where the gate radio is, but 1000ft through those trees.

IMG_0851s7.jpg

The ubiquity radio mounted on the house.
IMG_0853s7.jpg

And the gate side

IMG_0854s7.jpg

Pretty good bandwidth (500mbit) for going through trees.

If anyone is trying to get internet to a detached shop this is a great way to do it. Those radios are about $80 each.

Have you had an opportunity yet to really test out the Infratech heaters yet? I'd like to get your thoughts on their performance because we are also looking to incorporate heaters into our covered patio.

It is fall here, so I have just started using them. So far:

Pluses: They produce a pretty good amount of heat, and if you are sitting under them it will certainly warm you up. I placed two units spaced apart such that if you are sitting at the table you are covered, and that works well. I think the placement is somewhat important to getting good results.

Minus: They heat things that the infrared light hits, not the air, so if you place them such that everyone is not close to being under them they don't do much. Strong gas heaters heat the air so if you are downwind you get heat, but if you are upwind you don't.

I'll have a better idea once it starts to cool down here more, but so far I think they are working very well. No noise at all, a slight red glow when they are on, and my wife likes them a lot.

Maybe this is what I need to link out of the neighborhood to the end of some fiber. I think all we have access to is corroded steel cable, I'm lucky to get 20mb at the house.

Of course that would require a good size tower to get line of sight, with maybe some HF/VHF/UHF antennas above.

Love the graphs and info, I feel that is epic info to know wish they had some info like that for the AP.
1000 feet into the forest is impressive and show how good ubnt is. I have a few small pieces from them AP, switch, router impressed.:rocker:

I love the details you have shown us.

This thread continues to impress - currently running on Orbi with wired backhaul, but seeing the gold standard for a private home definitely redefines the goal for the next house! Also, looking great aesthetically, shop has come together nicely, and really appreciate the gun safe/reloading/JDM cars/ham radio/etc.

I sorta had the same problem at my house with internet reaching the front gate. I put a ring camera on the outside. After installing it i figured out that I didnt have enough wifi to get video. My gate from my house is only 175ft. I just added a lil wifi extender made by net gear.

It does work well for that sort of thing, but if you want to get really good bandwidth over long distance you do really need a pretty clear line of sight.. I think a tower with some HF antennas sounds great!

Thanks! The ubiquity gear, especially the wireless stuff, has been really great stuff for the cost. Easy to setup, and I ran a similar wireless link to my gate at the previous house for years with no problems at all.

Thanks! Hobbies are an important part of learning, so the more the better!

I Use the Ubuquiti Unifi system for the Mesh-Wifi in our place and i absolutely love it. the price is great too..

Yea the cost side is really really good with Ubiquity.. lots of features for the price, especially in the radio side.

Yea a wifi extender close by can work great, especially for that kind of distance On the ubiquity forums there are some people using these radios to do gate control a few miles away, which is pretty cool!

A number of people have asked about the cars in the garage, so I’ll talk about a few of them here and there.

One of them is my 2006 Pontiac GTO. Back in 2004 Pontiac decided it wanted to revive the GTO name and chose the Holden Monaro as the platform. The Monaro is built in Australia and so the 2004-2006 GTOs were also built on that same production line. The 2005 and 2006 version was a slight update from the 2004 including some minor cosmetic change and a change from the 5.7L LS1 to the 6.0L LS2 V8.

WH7Q9195s8.jpeg

WH7Q9202s8.jpeg

I bought this 2006 GTO new in 2006 and drove it stock for year. ( A crime, I know) I ended up ordering a twin turbo kit made in Australia that was adopted to the minor GTO differences. I debated between doing a supercharger vs the twin turbo, but the turbo idea won out.

The kit originally came with a pair relatively small older T3 style turbo, but I swapped those out a few years later for a set of Garett 3071s. The core engine is still almost completely stock except for valve springs replaced (which is somewhat critical if you are running a lot of boost). Fuel system is swapped out for direct lines, twin in tank pumps, 8x ID1000s, return based, HP Tuners, 3” dual exhaust, meth/water injection etc. I run either pump fuel with methanol injection + MMT, or E85. Since the engine is still 10.9:1 compression, knock is the real killer thus the octane enhancements.

IMGP3833s8.jpeg

The car has a decent size intercooler core..

IMG_7973s8.jpeg

I ended up trying a few different exhaust housings along the way.

IMG_8010s8.jpeg

tight fit right behind the headlights. This is the most difficult part of the layout, as the headlights are right there close to the intake. Not an ideal setup, and sometime I’ll weld together a new layout.

IMG_8024s8.jpeg

One odd change for the US Market was the gas tank, which is a separate floating tank that is pretty much in the trunk. In the Aus version the tank is behind the real axle much lower.

IMGP5153s8.jpeg

IMG_8139s8.jpeg

On the older turbos it was around 550-575whp, and on the 3071s it is around 650whp. I have ran higher boost a few times with no improvment in real performance, but a significant improvment in smoking tires at speed capability. A rear wheel drive car with limited tire width (275) and street tires is really really limited by traction.

Perhaps the best single mod I ever did to the car was to fit a Racelogic traction control system. It does selective cylinder retard and cylinder cut based on available traction, and it makes a night and day difference. ( thread from when I installed it - fyi https://www.ls1gto.com/threads/racelogic-traction-control-results.522194/)

It is a fun cruiser car, and the twin turbo setup really adds a lot to the character. I don’t see many running around town, especially out here on the west coast. I have about 28,000 miles on it, which is pretty low consider the 14 year age.. but there are lots of cars to choose from every day, and this one doesn’t see much driving in the rain… just not enough traction.

I am surprised you wired in the control unit and didn't use a line of sight radio system to link it up...

I'm not a fan o american cars (or australian for that matter), I'm more of a German/JDM fan boi. But I have always loved the GTO! It's just so pretty, and has beautiful lines.
Thanx for sharing this one with us!

Jeff what surveillance camera and software did you end up using? I was also wondering why you picked HTD system for your whole house audio. If your build was much smaller would you have used the same system?

You don't have any additional Racelogic units stockpiled by any chance do you? I have been searching high and low for one to implement into my Hayabusa-powered hillclimb monster but no such luck.

I too have mostly done work on Japanese cars, but the GTO was something I really like working on.

Yea, I was surprised when Racelogic discontinued it! They are hard to find indeed.. and no extras in my stockroom.

Post 767, like the "command center".

Thanks!

For the software part I am using BlueIris, which supports up to 64 cameras. It is on a dedicated machine with dedicated network connections to the camera VLAN, and has local storage as well as 10gig network storage.

For cameras, I am using a bunch of different ones. Ubiquity G4 Pros for some high res stuff that needs to do facial recognition, some G3s, some Amcrests, a few Reolinks, and a bunch of HikVisions.

As for the HTD - Part of the choice was because I wanted something end user configurable, not something that needs a local dealer. That limits lots of stuff. I of course needed 12 zones and about 40 speakers, so that limited the choices too.

The HTD stuff works well, but in a smaller house, if you only had a couple of zones the Sonus stuff could work well, and the are certainly others. A lot depends on what you need to control, and control with. Happy to talk more over PM if you have more specific questions.

GTO build is cool.
How much boost can you / do you run with the 10.9:1 compression?

It is highly dependent on the fuel. On pump fuel, which is 92 R+M/2 here I usually run 8-10psi, with methanol/water injection somewhere around 12-14, and with E85 or E98 up to 18, but I suspect the motor would not last long at that level.

Other things like intercooler temp/air temp also make a big difference, and of course the calibration itself is pretty critical. There are some limitations in the E40 PCM as well.

Hey Jeff, thanks for taking the time and energy to update your thread. The house turned out great and it's super nice to see some of your details documented here. To that end, and as somebody has already touched on, can you possibly share how you went your decision process for your security solution? Please don't share too many specifics about what you've done/are doing (obviously), but I'm more interested in the *process* you went through in determining what you needed.

Reason for my ask is that I'm trying to learn and decide on what security features I'd need and most of the web-aware systems out there are little more than sales ads. Simplisafe seems to get a lot of air time via folks on youtube, etc, and there's others out there, so it's difficult to know what might be the best fit.
Again, I'm just curious what some of the abilities or features you found good/not-so-good helped you during your discovery process. Perhaps there's no good way to answer this since everyone's installs will differ?
