Hello everyone I appreciate being a new member to your site and have some questions if anyone has the time please.
I framed an 18-3" X 8' opening and hired a local contractor to install an 18'X8' Door. He brought an 18'-02" door with windows across the entire top leaving the opener having to be offset about 11" from center
and the door if he adjust to fit flat when closed and the door opening 8' clearing my framed opening' it sounds like a train coming off the tracks at about halfway up going or coming.
Does anyone have any suggestion for me please for what I tell him?
The've been back trying everything except admitting they cut the door 18-02 for the extra 1' charge and the glass panel layout across the top is wrong and preventing the center of door support from being center of the opener, "any suggestions please?"
Would an offset for the opener fix this?
Thank y'all again

I would have stopped the install as soon as I saw the door was not what was ordered or agreed to. The door should open and close smoothly without an opener. The opener just does what you would do, but with a motor providing the muscle.

The opener being offset to match the attachment offset will likely still squeal, until the door itself is properly installed.

Contact the owner, give him a week to fix it, get and install the proper door, or give you back the money. After that it will get painful - small claims or lawyer.

if this is a sectional then an offset opener is typically ok per mfg

disconnect the closer and see how this opens by hand
if he is a licensed contractor you should have no problem getting him to fix

I agree I would have sent him packing when he brought whatever door he could find
and sounds like windows were a surprise ? There should be no surprises.
windows are a security risk IMO

It sounds like an all around cluster...

Have the contractor come back, remove the incorrect door, and install the door you ordered, not the one they stuck you with...

Sounds actually like the 18'2" door was a screwup from another job, and they're trying to save the money they spent on that door by foisting it on the next available sucker, er, customer...

Sounds like they tried to "get you" for an extra foot by playing games. A contractor playing games is a good way for a contractor to get fired (and possibly lose their contractors license).

so you framed an 18'3 opening and wanted an 18' door installed?

I understand this - you frame large, install a properly sized smaller door, then install a jamb casing (framework) to blend the door assembly to the edge of the opening.

I'm trying to get a grasp on this job. if the OP framed an 18'3 opening, thinking the installer was trimming the door , the contractor measured and installed a 18'2 door, ... something is missing here .

I agree ,, I even missed understood the original dimensions' statement but I also am not sure what type of door it is ? if it is a slab type then an offset opener may be a problem?

Have you asked the door vendor to address the problem? Perhaps you and the vendor can come to an understanding and agreement that both of you can live with.

You can catch more flies with Honey than you can with Vinegar.

Anyway; Welcome to the forum from Southwestern California.

So why does the width of the door have anything to do with the up/down travel as the door fits inside the opening?

I think the installer messed up tensioning the springs or misaligned the tracks.

8' high doors I've seen generally have 5 panels. Maybe the top windowed panel could be moved down to #4 (with a discount.)

I wouldn't be too happy with an offset opener unless it was a jackshaft.
