Hi All!

Another - it is what it looks like it is - question.

It's a drill press, even I figured that one out, :rocker: what I haven't figured out is who made it .

The chuck is made by Supreme. It only took me two years to figure out how to remove it. It's JT33 fit. It's seriously out of balance because of the weight of the motor and will tip over backwards with a just a slight bump. It runs good I guess, it drills holes anyway. I don't have any dial indicators to see if it has serious runout but i can't see any visually.

just narrowed the make down to a Toro. I bought it from a friend who wanted $20, I gave him $40.

Any thoughts?

No place for machine screws in the cover and it looks original. No model tag or screw holes on the base either. Except for the wiring and possibly the motor it seems unaltered.

The ones I have looked at are a mixture of styles it seems. Some have the motor mount bosses as two independent bosses per side with lock bolts in the rear one on each side (on top), some don't have but one solid boss on either side with the lock bolt on the bottom. Both styles represent the two years of production maybe?

Mine has the head lock for the column, the pictures of the ones I've seen don't have that lock handle but a lock bolt (aftermarket/later production change on mine maybe?). Basically it looks like the head casting was lightened up considerably on mine than what the others had since mine is basically skeletonized in comparison.

Maybe the feed handle knobs are home built on mine? They aren't the typical round plastic knobs typically found on equipment from that era.

Rare as hens teeth and as valuable as a modern penny.

Good that y'all identified it, as it would have remained unknown by me; in sixty years, I've never seen or heard of a Toro DP. What other machines did they make?

I have it listed on Vintage machinery in the photo's section (or is that OWWM.org?) one or the other.

It runs quiet, it runs smooth. I just need to get it on a solid base that won't let it tip over. And do some cleanup on the switch and wiring, but for now, it ain't broke.

I was looking at some better chucks last night...I think I'll keep this Supreme, all I need is a key that fits it. I threw it in the ultrasonic cleaner for an hour then dried it thoroughly and threw it in my brass tumbler for about three hours. There's still minor rust stains on it but it's a lot cleaner now and opens and closes smoothly except for one minor catch when it's almost closed tight. I can live with that.

If the belt is running at an angle as it appears, fix it before it wears the flange off the pulley.

Here is a source for your chuck key. They also list what Jacob's chucks use the same key.

crguy,I've never changed the belt speed on it. I went down in the basement to see if the picture is an optical illusion. The pulley's are not perfectly aligned but they aren't as bad as the picture makes them look. The motor could come up a 1/16"+/-. However, I didn't turn it on to see where the rotor rested at speed. It could possibly raise that much once it's magnetized. Just guessing there.
