Along the lines of the oil change thread...

What kind of container do yall use to take your used oil to a proper disposal facility? I need some sort of sealable jug to pour it into for transport. I'm trying to be a good boy and not pour it into a hole in the back yard of the new house...

I use the storm drain, just kidding. I pour the oil into a 5 gallon plastic water container with a pour nozzle. Then it goes to the fire department recycle center.

I have a dedicated oil pan unit which stores aprox 25 liters. But, in a pinch why don't you just pour all the used oil back into the used containers? :headscrat

I use one of these. Made by Blitz, holds 3 gallons. Bought at Walmart.

I have several 5 gallon, corrosive chemical, plastic buckets. They have a screw on top on the pour spout and work very well. A 5 gallon plastic gas can would work just as well. Once 4 or 5 changes are done, a trip to Advanced Auto takes care of it.

I buy oil in 5 quart containers. The used oil goes back into them and get transported to my local auto parts store for recycling. They work like a champ and they're free! Well... sort of free.

I'm diggin' the 3 gallon container from WM though...

I use 5-gallon plastic buckets with snap-on lids. I also have 2 5-gallon steel mineral spirits cans with a screw top. Sad to say, all 3 are now full...as is my drain pan. Apparently it is time to go to the recycle yard.

I have a Duramax diesel (13 quarts), an old 1986 Porsche 911 (12 quarts), and the G8GT at 9? quarts.... need to buy oil by the drum!

I do the same thing except the oil goes to our county's household hazardous material collection every few months. My local parts stores won't take the containers. They empty the oil into their tank and then give you the jug back - not worth the hassle of dealing with them when the county takes it all.

I feel you on needing to buy oil by the drum pgreen. I have an 05 F250 (15qts), 94 F250, 95 F250, 95 F350, 96 F350 (14-16qts each), 08 wrangler (6qts), 95 trooper (5 qts).

Everytime I change oil, I pour it into a 5 gallon bucket with a popup spout so I can transport it to the recycling center. I used to pour it back into the one gallon jugs but it was a PITA. One thing that makes life a little easier is a Fumoto valve on my 05. Just hook a hose to it and run the other end into the 5 gal bucket, turn the valve and it drains. Gotta get them for the other trucks soon.

I bet oil by the drum is a lot cheaper than by the gallon.

empty window washer fluid bottles

Exactly.........why would anyone buy a container when these things are blowin' around everywhere in the wind, especially in the winter months.

Collect a few of these and re-use your original containers too. Keep a funnel nearby and just load them up with your old oil. Have seen round drain pans that have a spout off to the side which would even eliminate the funnel.

Don't throw all of it away, keep some for drillin' at the drill press and to spray on the underside of your car (mixed with a bit of beeswax), makes a good rust inhibitor if used regularly. Old ATF good for that also.

I use empty laundry soap jugs. I buy the cheap stuff in the 1+ gallon jugs for my work clothes. They're great cause if you miss the hole a little bit, it just drains into the container. Look at how the spouts are designed to not run down the side of the container.

And the 25gallon container out back, but that thing can be troublesome to empty if filled all the way up. I usually only fill it half way or so.

I take all my stuff to the shop to empty. The reason most places accept used oil is because they get paid for it

Many used oil collection facilities will only accept your oil. You have to pack out your empty container.

Many plastic containers such as milk jugs, cat litter containers, etc. are not immune to the affects of the oil. If you leave them around a couple of months before your trip to the disposal facility, you may find a mess. The side or bottom may have split and all your oil will have spilled onto the ground.

A 5 gallon gas can makes an excellent used oil container. It is immune to the oil, holds several oil changes worth of used oil, it is easy to pour into or out of, and is re-usable.

Actually I'm pretty lucky. I collect the oil in a 55 gallon drum. When it's about 3/4 full I put it in the back of my pickup and drive it about three miles to the oil recycler who gladly pumps it out for free. Just hope they don't go away in the next few years..........

I've been using a 30 gal plastic barrel. When it's full, if I don't get my old one back in return, I'll be making the switch to a plastic 55 gal.

Same here. I am a mechanic, so I just take the bucket to work with me and dump it in our waste oil tank.

I got a container years ago and I have no idea where it come from. Its a 5 gallon container from a restaurant that drink mix came in..the syrup that they mix with the carbonated water. Its a round plastic container with a handle and spout with screw on lid. I empty my catch pan into this until its full then take it to OReilly to empty. Just the ticket...wish I had another as it fills up pretty quickly. I may get one of those from WM...

Thanks for the replys everyone. I want something that I can seal up and take back with me after leaving the drop of place. I like that jug from Wal-Mart and the idea of using a gas can.

Thanks!

I'm actually very fortunate. I have a recycling program with our regular garbage pickup and they take the empty oil containers.

We have a curbside oil recycling program, but I change oil so often that it's more convenient for me to drop it off at my local parts store.

Chevron Dello for my diesels comes in gal containers. That is what I for the oil dump run.

Lately, I put used motor oil and ATF in my old diesel's fuel tank, at a rate of about 20%. It run nice and smooth on it.

Only works for several oil changes on cars, my truck takes three gallons. I usually just slide a five gallon bucket under the oil pan, open the valve and away we go. Thankfully I only change it when the sample comes back bad.

Same here. It's made in USA, even!

Cap doesn't seal all that well, but as long as you don't overfill it's not an issue. I transport the container in the passenger compartment of my car (no truck), and it doesn't leak on my carpets.

I empty the oil into one of those cheap, flimsy plastic holders from Wal-mart that can barely hold 5 qts :) Then I dump it into old bottles of oil, wiper fluid, coolant, etc (usually spilling some in the process). Then when I have a few (or sometimes several) saved up, I drop them off in front of the doors at the Walmart tire center.

I'd like something better to pour the oil into..but anything much larger, and I'd have to jack up the car to fit it underneath.

I should at least get one of those sealed ones though. A smaller one might still squeeze in place.

Bucket (5gal) from HD. Also have an empty plastic jug with a wide opening that held cat litter. Picked it up at Wally World for just this purpose.
