Posted this one up in the Vise thread, needs it's own thread though I think.

My uncle gave me this vice a couple of weeks ago, what a guy! It was lying under his bench with another smaller Record & he decided he didn't need the bigger one.

I had seen a pic somewhere before of these, probably on here, & thought they looked kinda cool. I also wanted to replace the cheesy swivel vice on my metalwork bench with something better. So when I was asked if I wanted it I was very quick to say yes.

Some googling & browsing on here came up with the info that these were likely made around 1935 - 1950. Thanks to whoever scanned this catalog page I found:

Record%2075%20catalog%20page-XL.jpg

This one had quite worn jaw inserts, a slightly bent handle & the pipe jaw insert was missing. There were a few hacksaw marks & dings & the swivel locking handles had been replaced with bolts, but in general it was in reasonable shape for an old vice, there was grease on the screw & it opened & closed fairly smoothly & swiveled freely.

Some more googling located a source for new jaw inserts, Vice Works UK Adrian there was also able to make up a replacement pipe jaw insert, supply new bolts for the jaws & while I was shopping I also ordered some new jaw inserts for the trusty No.5. So I am currently waiting on that pack of goodies to be made up & sent over from ol Blighty.

With new parts incoming I started the stripdown. The 3 remaining jaw bolts all sheared off but as the jaw inserts were junk anyway I didn't waste time trying to get them out intact. The rest all came apart easily.

What was left of the old paint wire wheeled off pretty easily.

On with some primer...

Which brings us up to date. Need to get some red spray paint for the next coat.

Cheers

Nice work Clint ! I'm probably too late, but I've recently taken to filling any and all small holes or openings with toothpicks. Beats the heck out of stuffing tape or whatnot in there. The toothpicks conform to irregular shapes quite easily.

That vise is neat, and the swivel portion is especially interesting to me, as it seems older in the catalog image.

Keep us posted!

After reading the brioshure and seeing your parts layout, the base components are quite solid looking ! That's a cool piece:rocker::rocker:

Thanks, for the style of vice it is quite burly - of course usually exposed screw vice are fairly small & lightweight, but not this one.

There seem to have been a few variations of the No. 75, the lettering on mine is different from the catalog pic too. I'd be interested to know if any of the GJ vice/vise gurus can give it a more accurate date. Apparently after 1950 the castings were iron so those don't have 'Steel' on them. Mine also has a small 'P' on some of the castings, anybody know what that means?

More progress - the handle is now straight.

Good progress so far ! I just noticed the neatest design feature is that spindle and it's support tube hanging off of the back of the vise.. That and the base itself, is making me put one of these guys on my personal vise to obtain hit list !

Keep those photos coming, and let us know the shade and brand of red you use !

Great vise and work !

Nice work! I have been on the lookout for a Record 75... very cool design, stout, and daring to be different than most of the square-channel slide vises (yet not a bullet!)

Thanks, another good thing about the design that occurred to me is that as the tube is also the spindle nut, it would be fairly straightforward for any decent machinist to lathe up a new one if it was worn out.

Paint is now on - Wattyl Epoxy Gloss Enamel - it looked to have the best potential for durability of the selection at the local hardware store. Delicious Red! :D I think the original red was a likely little darker but there weren't many choices & it's close enough to the bright red that is already part of the 'workshop colour palette'

Back together with the aid of special tool 0001 to put the split pin back in.

Operates pretty smoothly after a clean and lube.

Making up some proper swivel locks is the next job while I wait for the new jaws.

Thank you very much for sharing.
I have got one to.
I really love it.
I often think about how old it might be.
I was hoping that some of you Brits here, might have some info on that.
I guess it could simply be a year 1935 model?
Btw, I have a small Record "imp" also [emoji4]

Nice! My one does not have any numbers under the main casting like that.

I am currently trying to see if I can borrow a 1/2" Whitworth die from somewhere, if I can do that I'll machine up some blanks for the swivel locks & hand cut the threads. (my wobbly old Atlas lathe is not accurate enough to cut a thread with) Otherwise I'll weld some new tops on the Whitworth bolts.

Cheers

My new jaws for the 75 arrived, all the way from Vice Works UK & they fitted perfectly.

The new pipe jaw:

So she's now in service. I have found a Whitworth die I can borrow to make proper swivel locks but that will have to wait a few weeks until some more urgent projects are out of the way.

The Model 75 is a superb vice, I have one, albeit a later example, not steel. However, it still features the earlier pear shaped spindle, with oil hole, swivel locks, and dovetailed anvil, deleted on later models, when the anvil became part of the body casting. My particular example is unrestored, and still wearing most of its original paint, the transfers/decals are almost intact. I would not dream of restoring it, and losing all of that lovely patina!.
As a matter of interest, the transfer/decal on the side of the vice gives details of the material used for the castings, and states "Guaranteed Against Breakage".

Hello all, this is one in my Dads home workshop.
I will be bringing it home early in the new year.
Was chasing any info on it if I can?4D83BD46-812C-4296-8AE5-AC536F73B88A.jpeg

Had a good rainy weekend here so finally got around to making up some proper swivel locks for the #75. The originals had been replaced with bolts. A chunk of Nissan steering rod got processed through the new & improved machine shop...

DSC_0011-L.jpg

A little patina already on the handles but that was the only chunk of steel in the right thickness on hand.

rPA040173-L.jpg

I was going off the brochure pic to size these but I should have looked back into this thread as Boxhead's pics clearly show that I should have made the handles a bit thicker to better match the original. Ah well, if I ever bend them I'll mill out the slot & make thicker ones. Without any farmers or apprentices around to take to them with a hammer I think we'll be pretty safe.

Cheers

Hi HurriBus , if you still have this vice could you please post a close up photo of the Side Decal mentioning the 'Guaranteed Against Breakage and made from Pearlitic Malleable iron' , as I want to get a new decal made for mine .
Many thanks - John Moses .
