Brakes are no fun. Essential, but not fun to work on. I spent some time this weekend replacing parts, adjusting. Bleed, rinse, repeat.

They are truly the bane of my existence :willy_nil

There wasn't near as much blood letting as I expected, but there was plenty of colorful language used!

I'm with you, I have fought brakes just about any time I've had to deal with them, always fighting back. Glad you knocked it out and are done with that little project.

I thought I had found a nice 2-door Yukon to buy for the wife...with hopes to LS swap it in the near future. Shady seller, so I backed away quickly.

Anyways, we were on the lookout for another one, and I ran across a rare spec'd Tacoma. I remember when this body style came out in 2005, I almost bought a white access cab 6 speed TRD Off Road. Well I knew as soon as I showed my wife she'd have to have it, so I called the dude and worked out the details, and then showed the wife. I've never seen her more excited about a vehicle (well probably not as much as her Mach 1, but still pretty excited). So we now own a TRD T/X Baja. Basically a baby Raptor.

Got to put the new trailer to use, both it and Suburban did a great job.

Pulled onto I29 and set the cruise @ 70 and just let it eat, didn't even know it was back there.

Spent the morning cleaning the Tacoma up, needs some more paint correction on the hood, but it's good for now. Also fixed the backup camera that wasn't working.

Nice score on the Taco Marc. I kinda like those trucks although I haven't had a ton of experience with them. I have a guy now who wants me to do some mods to a 2003 he just purchased but haven't gotten it in the shop yet.

Thanks, she deserves nothing short of the best!

That's a great find! Basically a TRD Pro before TRD Pro existed.

Thank you, yes I've done quite a bit of reading on the subject. Sounds like the Taco was a good purchase, not just because of the model, but because of the reliability, ease of maintenance, and resale value.

Thanks, Mike! I've always wanted one, but have never been able to justify a mid-sized pickup for my ownership. Wife brought a new Ford Ranger home for a few weeks, but I was never impressed, and unless you step into a newer rig with the Canyon/Colorado GM stuff...you've got that weird 5cyl. I put about 100 miles on it this weekend and used it for my weekly grocery run. So far I'm impressed, and it seems to be doing great on fuel. I filled it up to run some Techron through it, and calculated mileage was 18.9mpg...not enough miles on that tank for a super accurate reading, but I'll take anything over 16mpg.

Nice buy Marc.

As usual, I will suggest some modifications to your new purchase, although they may not conform to your needs or style in any way.
1. Snorkel way up the A pillar (to show all the other yota folks you plan to cross DEEP rivers)
2. Roof rack with recovery gear. high lift jack, traction boards, shovel , rake
3. Roof top tent on bed mount
4. Massive rear bumper with several gas cans and spare tire
5. $10,000 in rigid LED lights, all over. Stacked light bars.
6. Bed drawer slide system with 1000# of gear in them.
7. 1000# in skid plates, sliders, and other armor
8. 4" lift to get back to stock height will all the added weight.
9. 5.29 gears to compensate for all the weight.

While I'm on board with about 90% of this list, I'm a bit disappointed, Justin. At no point in your suggestions, did you offer up forced induction or nitrous.:thumbup:

Other than some side steps and a few other normal things...I may put an avidoffroad.com front bumper guard on it, based on the amount of plastic up there and our occasional Bambi encounters.

Great score on the TACO!

Thanks BMF!

Hoping to spend some time in the shop this weekend.

'Burb needs an oil change and the tires rotated, and the new sidesteps came in for the wife's pickup.

The correct window channel for the 'burb also came in, so I'll get that knocked out while its inside....third one's a charm right?

Turns out, third one...was not...a charm. Wrong part all together, I checked the box to make sure parts were in there, and then caught the Precision packaging and assumed I had the correct part. Oh well, they got the correct one sent 2 days later and it is now installed.

Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015's are wearing quite well, I need to get a tread depth gauge to keep better track, but after 12k miles, these are still full of tread, minimal wear to the rears. Still quiet on the highway and minimal noise rolling up to speed.

I switched back to Castrol Edge on this oil change, went with the same 0w40 I run in the Z28, see if it likes that better. If not, I'll go back to the Rotella T6 5w40. 5w30 recommended, but it was drinking a little too much for my liking.

Hauled home some OSB and some 2x4's from the local lumber yard/hardware store yesterday to build some more shelves in the shop. Who needs a pickup when you can put 8' lengths of lumber in your rig? Glad I didn't go with the 4 door Yukon.

Used my new Admiral 12" sliding compound miter saw to size them up. Had a coupon, and it was better than my other house brand 10" saw. Wife also brought me home a Bauer wet/dry vac after my ShopVac brand unit died (bearing went out, served me for 8 solid years, however). Boy let me tell ya, that new Bauer *****! :bounce:

After I built the shelves over where I park the skid steer, I painted it up to match and went around the shop painting all the stuff I have neglected to finish in the last 3 or so years.

We got notice on Thursday that starting Monday 12/14 certain employees would be working from home until at least 1/1/21. Well, I was on that list. Makes things interesting, but I'll work through it. We have an office in the house, but I use my "office" in the shop...maybe I'll get all my parts sorted through and organized, do a little Winter cleanup. :dunno:

A little more work on the shop. I've had a "to-do" that has needed done for some time now. I noticed at night, when the shop lights were on with the overhead door closed, you could see some light sneaking through the exterior seal...not good for heating purposes. Instead of punching more holes in the exterior tinwork, I bought a seal that mounts to the top of the door on the inside. Sent priority 3 day, but took close to 10 days to receive, it did however, arrive earlier than the USPS website tracker claimed. Pulled out the 10' ladder and went to work installing it, took about 30min and multiple trips up and down the ladder by myself. So far so good, I think a couple large ceiling fans would help keep the warm air down closer to the floor, but I'm not ready to make that committment just yet.

We have a large storm cell moving in with 6"-12" of snow, depending on your weather source. I spent the morning getting into snow mode. Filled the generator, 4-wheeler, and skid steer with fuel. Went to town and bought 20gal of fresh 91 octane no ethanol fuel, and some new wiper blades for the wifes pickup. I've got tomorrow off, I'll probably put the bucket on the skid steer and swap it around with the mowers so it's ready to just drive out the door and start pushing snow.

Nicely done! Mind sharing the link for that seal? Noticed a similar problem on my big door last week and this looks like a much nicer way to fix

Good luck on the storm....consensus of the forecasts I've seen so far have Omaha area in the heavy band....so hoping it blows away from us but ready if not!

I'm ready for the snow if it hits us, in all reality, I love an excuse to push snow on the skid steer :willy_nil

Some pictures of the ice and snow storms we had the last couple of weeks. Made a quick trip into town with the wife's pickup to get 3 sleds to pull behind the 4-wheeler. Didn't even have to use 4WD, I was impressed with the little Tacoma. This was 6" of powder on top of ice.

Youngest made some paths before I got the skid steer out and cleaned it all up. Then we spent the afternoon blasting around out in the fields on the 4-wheeler with sleds in tow. New Tusk tires on the Bombardier did quite well in the snow.

Today I pulled SWMBO's pickup in and did an oil change and swapped out the plugs. I was not prepared for how fast oil runs out...wow...so that made a mess. Plugs weren't a terrible job, and it definitely was time. Pickup has 55k, plugs are to be done every 30k as needed, these were the factory units. Funny story, Tacoma's come with three NGK plugs on the driver's side and three Denso plugs on the passenger's side. By the looks of things they should just use the Denso's, better wear based on what I'm looking at. Gaps were definitely opened up.

Yuck on the ice and snow storms Marc. We don't usually get ice storms in our part of the country but have been in one several years ago and that was enough for me. As for snow, we are generally shoveling snow from around Christmas through late February but so far we've been unseasonably warm this year. It's been low 40's for the past week and a half or so. As much as I hate snow, we need it so I can have a green lawn this summer.

Mike, unfortunately, ice storms are fairly common here, and generally come with power outages. We lucked out this last storm as there was no wind accompanying the ice, that would have been bad, there was at least .25" of ice.

Our weather has been typical midwest crazy, warm for a few days and then back to cold. We should be mid 40s-50s all week again, after below freezing temps last week. Looking forward to getting all the rigs washed.

Nice score on the Yota. I never realised how big your "American" "trucks" really are. I think of a Ute. And that's just a hilux. We had one customer rock up to the workshop with a imported toyota tundra I think it was? (This was many years ago)

Well the bonnet was taller than me. (Granted I'm only 5'4) this thing was huge!!! And he drove a skid steer loader right into the back tub.

We are starting to get dodge rams and Silverados here, and even the f150/250 and they just tower over anything on the road (which is all japanese stuff)

Thanks Rudi! The Hilux and Tacoma should be pretty close in size from what I understand about them. The model my wife has, comes with a factory 2.5" lift kit.

The picture of it on the trailer behind my Suburban is a bit deceiving, the Suburban dwarfs the Tacoma, I'm 6'2-6'3 and I can't look over the roof of the Suburban, not exactly the bonnet, but still.

I'd still really like to have an LS powered UTE!

I honestly don't know why GM didn't take the Ute to the US. There is nothing in the line up similar, so they wouldn't be taking sales away from their other vehicles, hell... there are NO utes there, they would have a monopoly on the market. Every American I talk to wish they had the Ute.....

But who knows. GM killed Holden, they own the intellectual property of anything Holden did here, even if it had nothing to do with GM. I wouldn't be surprised if they steal all our hard work and release a new El Camino.... oh it's just a Holden Ute..... really twist the knife in our back lol.

On a similar tangent ford release the mustang here with no competition and whadda ya know? They sell like hot cakes! 60k for a stang.... GM brings over a base model SS camaro..... ask 95k.... who would buy the camaro when its 30k more.....

I'm a huge fan of GM products, but they sometimes make it really hard to appreciate the decisions they make. Now having a Holden Ute with an LS engine here would be a blast, kinda like putting a v8 in an S10. :D Hope the weather is nice to you the next few days Marc.

Rudi, it's too bad they did that with Holden, I remember reading about it. Too many cool cars tied to that brand to kill it off. But they also did that to Oldsmobile and Pontiac here, so who knows :headscrat

Hope the weather is nice to you the next few days Marc.

JB

Thanks JB, we had another 3-4" of powder last night, so around 5-6" total over the last two days with ice underneath it. I haven't even had to put the 'burb in 4WD yet(except for the very top of the driveway to the daycare the youngest goes to, long icy hill with western exposure...did it to avoid ending up in their yard). I'm super pleased with the Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015 tires...awesome in the snow and great grip on snowpack/ice.

In other news, since purchasing the wife's Mach 1 a few years ago, I've never been happy with how Ford tucks the rear wheels deep in the wheelwell. A company by the name of AFS had made a 17x10.5 wheel in the past, but had no stock when I wanted to purchase. One would imagine they cast a container full of wheels and then have to wait for the next shipment when they run out. Well, I happened to look the other day and they were back in stock....so I pulled the trigger. Ordered Monday night @ 6pm. Should be here by Friday. I plan to shod them in 315/35R17 sized rubber, probably a Toyo all-season for better wet road rain traction...@ 315hp, it definitely doesn't need a drag radial!

Kinda funny you say that, I remember when the DOHC Cobra then Mach 1 engines came out and then the Cobra with 390 hp all of the gear head guys in my high school lost their minds. Looking just now it appears they wouldn't have been bad to own an 03-04 Cobra hardtop is nearly $30k knocking on the door of the first GT500's. :dunno:

JB, I look back on all the inexpensive (at the time) cars/pickups I didn't have the money for, and what they go for now...it blows my mind.

The 88-98 GMT400 platform like my Suburban is coming into the money in a big way right now. Clean examples are 12,500-17,500+. Guess I'll have to wait on that regular cab shortbed I "need".

I know what you mean there, crazy money for the OBS and Square Body trucks if they are even close to clean. It seems the market is a little low locally but still much higher than just a few years ago. I can't even seem to find NBS trucks as cheap as I could just 3 years ago either. Am I just getting old?

Question for those who follow along. I've been considering starting a Projects Thread on the Fab/Techniques part of the forum. Does that make it easier for everyone else to follow along, or is it more cumbersome with 2 threads?

In other news, the new wheels are on Mrs. OutlawDrifter's Mach 1. I'm more than pleased with the look and better yet, so is she. After swapping the tires over, I gave the car a ceramic coating and conditioned the leather seats. Then pulled the trigger on some louvers for the back window to complete the "Mach 1" look.
