Your new gas cap reminded me of a story about my Dad.

We were driving across Montana to visit our Uncle and we stopped for fuel. My Dad placed the cap on the roof and filled up. He paid and got in the car and we took off. After a bit we heard a noise and my Dad realized he forgot to put the cap back on and it had slid off the roof. He pulled over and said, “ I bet that happens to a lot of people. All I have to do is walk back along the road. If I don’t find mine, I’ll find a one that flew off a different car.”. He got out and started walking. I remember sitting in the car watching him out the back window. He walked for a bit and then bent over and raised something up above his head! He was smiling the whole walk back to the car. He put the found cap on the car and got in and started driving, grinning from ear to ear. My Mom said, “I can’t believe you found ours. Great work!”. He said, “I didn’t find ours, I found a better one. This one has a lock on it!”.

About a mile later when he realized he didn’t have the key for his newly locked gas cap, his smile turned into a frown. One of my favorite memories!

My favorite part was once we got to my Uncle’s house (my Dad’s older brother). My Dad told the story. My Uncle was hard of hearing so my Dad had to talk loud. My Uncle kept having him repeat what he said, “I found a better one. This one has a lock on it.”. He pretended he couldn’t hear him, but he was laughing so hard that all of started laughing.

That is some Chevy Chase antics there!

So after being ready for bodywork for 3 years I finally got started on the last piece of sheet metal for the 64'. There were 3 holes to weld up and a crack near the rear edge.

20201115_123250 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20201115_123256 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I almost made it disappear.

20201115_123938 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

So this is a shot from the inside of the fender. If you didn't know 4d nails make excellet filler to weld up holes. When you are done you can cut the nail off and bob's your uncle.

20201115_121626 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Here's a shot after welding and grinding. Not perfect but close. A little metal to metal and no one will know. If I was a pro they make these things disappear before body work.

Another crack I welded up.

20201115_124446 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

The pliers are pulling it together.

20201115_124501 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I forgot an after shot.

This is the filler I use over all welds. It is fiberglass reinforced and waterproof. So it helps seal incase there are any pinholes in your welds. Which I am sure mine do. The only thing I don't like about it is the hardener is clear so it's hard to tell you when you have it mixed properly so I just time myself and mix for a minute.

Morning Bret,

Looking great.

I am just inside, took two days off work to get the roof up, but sheets are in place already, just needs loads of pilot holes and screws to be done.

Sunrises and sunsets continue to be smile generators for me.

Bret, I can tell you had help putting the groceries away. A professional shelf stocker would have faced-up ALL the items on the shelves. I only worked at Grand Union for a few months but they taught me OCD is a good thing.

Hey Brett,

I am using something similar as the metal to metal material you have, but its called Duraglass. Thats some seriously tough stuff! I used it in high impact areas so hopefully it holds better then bondo would. It was recommended by my paint guy so we will see.

How do you like the little welder? Does it have mig capability or is it only flux weld?

I like a well stocked "organized" fridge too, but I live with 4 slobs who just throw stuff where it fits with no pattern. So I keep a mini fridge stocked with certain things in the garage to have a little Ying for my yang in my life.

Thank You. The welder is Mig capable and it can run on 110 or 220. So far I have been very impressed. It is on par with the Lincoln 220 pak I was borrowing from my dad.

The rear passenger bedside and fender of the 64' are in primer. They have been stripped to bare metal and bolted on the truck since Oct. of 2017.(shame on me). Well now they are in primer.

20201119_101418 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Just in case you are wondering. These rear fenders are just under 5ft long. Is that longer than one of those stupid tiny cars? :D

The outside piece of bedwood got its paint this morning as well.

20201120_073903 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

So I had a moment of "scope creep"(termed by BdBecker). I was going to start on the welder cart. And I thought man I should dig out the old tablesaw and get it setup as a welding table so I will have a decent surface to work on.

20201120_094247 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

2 hours later.

20201120_104152 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I still need to clean the cast iron up. I originally was going to try and save this saw. But all the cast iron parts are so rusted. It would be a lot of work and this wasn't a great saw to begin with. So welding table it is. I realistically would like to get a piece of 3/16 or 1/4" sheet to go on top. I also can't decide if I want to bolt my outside vice to it. Part of me thinks it would get in the way.

20201120_110902 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I also want to weld some of the 1" pipe scrap I have across the bottom and weld the legs to the rolling rack. It would make it more ridged and add weight. I left the saw trunnion in place for weight but it does make it a little top heavy. I also want to get some granite gravel sand and make a little pad for it to sit on that is more stable than the rocks.

Enjoy your cool, misty QST, it's the hottest ever 2 days in November in Sydney at present (now being 11:15 am on Sunday). And at 10:30 it passed 38C (100F), on its way to 41C (105F) this afternoon. Can't but hide inside with the **** tube on Youtube or Foxtell......

Of course that has made the weekend useless for QST here! Back to work tomorrow on a much milder day!

Have fun!

Wow, those pies look yummy! I think it's always fun to make stuff with grown/harvested-at-home ingredients.

Those new photos are killer, they speak for themselves. I recently got a new phone as well and was blown away by the night and day difference from my old phone, which was only 3-4 years old. Was not expecting such a difference. It's really amazing how far smartphone cameras have progressed with image processing, dynamic range, HDR, etc. My LED shop lights, though super bright, would always demolish highlights or anything white in pictures. It's so much better now. I'm liking the wide angle option you have, too :)

Of course the house and your holiday projects are looking great, too!

Thank You Nick. Yes I actually had to go on google and educate myself on this new phone it has some many features. I had an S9 which did take really good pictures. My new one is the S20 ultra. Which can take a 108mp photo. Holy cow they are like 10mb each!

BJ, nice letters. Good mix of colors and textures.
Are your Xmas lights single color?

Thank You Kay. Yes all clear lights in honor of Clark Griswald!

Bret that camera seems really impressive. We are due for new ones as well, but keep putting it off. Those pies look too good.

I had to wait til my phone was paid off and then they were out of stock on the S20 so the wife bought me the Ultra.

Good morning Bret,

Loving the cat profile.

Regarding wasting $500.00 I am 100% with you there.

Mum in Law’s (outlaw) letters came out beautifully

We had an amazing sunset this week, which I will not clutter your thread with, but got posted in my thread.

Even your foggy shot looks good as it actually has a mood element to it.

Digging the Christmas presents! I'm curious to see how the cat on the blocks come out!

Interesting brakes components, never used those on any of my vehicles. Then again I doubt I would of seen any improvements on the ranger, minivan, or the f250. Maybe the camaro would be a good candidate?

The truck bed is looking good! So when you're going to paint it? Heard there's snow in texas so maybe you need to wait for a warmer day!

Oh and I would of passed on the PS5 also, but then again they have been selling for stupid money on ebay!

You shoulda bought the PS5 and flipped it on ebay for $1500

So after some use how are you liking the divider/workbench wall you put in? Looking pretty functional to me.

Bret, BTW congratulations on H-E-B being named grocer of the year.
The few times I was in Texas, we did cruise through one of those stores and I was impressed with the offerings and most of all the employees. It was hard to get through an aisle without someone asking if I needed help. Very friendly people. Then again, most Texans are.

Take care!

Love the Christmas presents. Thanks for sharing your journey!

Thank You TJ. Glad you enjoyed my ramblings.

I really need to get better at updating. By the time I get to it I forget what order I have done things and trying to remember what days I did what with each picture.

So the new brakes for the wifes car turned out to be a disaster. Needless to say at the end of the day I ended up having to get parts store rotors and pads and the Powerstop stuff are now expensive paper weights that Amazon will not let me return. I usually do extensive research on these projects.

However having owned a previous XC90 I thought I knew what I was doing. They didn't change much from 2003-2014. However they decided to have 2 different brake setups on the front at least on the 13'. One version is single piston caliper and one is dual. They also have different size rotors by 12mm. So as you can guess I ordered the wrong ones not knowing they were different. That's what I get for trusting Amazon's vehicle fitment.

But the first hurdle before any of that was finding the right size allen socket head to get the damn Caliper off. I don't have a whole lot of Metric tools. So I thought I needed an 11mm, but after ordering one and waiting a couple of days I discovered I actually needed a 9mm. So yea no local stores had either one of these sizes. Finally with the 9mm I got the caliper off. This was the 3rd time attempting to change the brakes. And then I had to summon almighty Zeus to help bust loose the caliper bracket bolts which all had a ton of loctite on them. Geez. Finally everything was apart. I put the rotor on and went to install the brake pads and bam! They didn't fit. &^%$#^&*

So anyways that is all over and it has new brakes moving on.

The only parts store local that had parts was Advance Auto. So I bought the best stuff they had because I don't want to do this project again for another 47,000 miles.

Ok on to more fun stuff. After all that disaster I went to Lowes and bought me a new blade for my tablesaw and a new 1/2" shank flush trim bit.

I also finally made it to Harbor Freight and spent a gift card I got back in the summer time because they finally had this little guy in stock.

I made a quick stand for it that has a back so that it doesn't fling material everywhere. I also made a stand for the belt sander. I am going to put some threaded inserts into the bench top so I can quickly mount these or take them off if I need the space and not have to use clamps to hold them down.

I did crudely fix this failing board with another old warped board. But this one has paint so maybe it will last longer! HA.

Bret, just checking in. The truck project looks simply amazing...you've been a busy boy. Of course, you're always a busy boy, despite your laments regarding the daily red X program a few pages back :)

The fact that you're taking the time to actually do proper metal work is refreshing to see, and is pretty much on par with the excellent restoration shaping up there. It's a super boss old truck!

Man that brake job was making me frustrated just reading about it!

New tools are always fun :)

I like your idea for the threaded inserts on the sander / buffer stands.

The doggies look cozy and cuddly.

Merry (early) Xmas Bret!

Bret,

I am so glad you posted this update, particularly the 5th picture. I had been worried for some time that someone had hijacked your thread. But, I can rest easy now that I have spotted (in that 5th pic) a pickle jar! On a serious note, I really enjoy reading the posts of your projects and seeing your artful interpretations. Merry Christmas to you and your family and here is hoping next year is a whole lot better than this one!

Thank You Dennis for all the kind words and following along. I don't know if my metal work is the best but I do the best I can.

Merry Christmas!

Thank You Nick. Getting new tools never gets tired. Even my dad still enjoys getting ones even though he has everything under the sun.

Merry Christmas!
