Yes you need to! The first step is to take the screws out, second step is to take the cover plate off. Then you take the gear out you can then lube the gear and stick it back in.

To get the cover off of mine I pulled the screws and then held the ratchet, cover side down, over the edge of my plastic Mac roll- around. Then I whacked the handle, right next to the head, on the edge of the roll- around. It jars the guts out and the tray catches them.

As I understand it, the older ratchets such as yours can't be disassembled without breaking the direction lever. The lever goes all the way through to the back plate and is peened over the back plate, the pawl gear is part of the lever assembly he said. Pops told me when he did warranty he would break the lever off with a chisel since the rebuild kit included new.

A small punch from were the screws go in and beat the plate off.

Ill try these trick tomorow...

what should I use to lubricate the ratchet should I pack it with grease?

thnx for the replies I just did not whant to break it since I got it in heritage...

The cover and main gear can be removed without removing the reverse lever.

A thin grease should work fine. Do a search on the forum for Red Lube and you should find what most people on here use.

Be forewarned, the "RED LUBE OF LOVE" aka RLL (or in the real world permatex engine assembly lube #81950) works wonders! It will smooth out the ratchet action considerably. But the ratchet will ooze that **** for a very long time if you lube too much!
