Impact socket set... under 50?

So, time has come to decide what I want for Xmas and my birthday thats coming up. As I was driving home and seeing a guy changing a flat(putting the spare on the front of his front wheel drive car...) I was thinking of a set of impact sockets to keep in the car with my Dewalt impact gun, just in case. The limit for the adults is 50 bucks. I've looked online, tekton only has a lug nut set in that price range, harbor freight has some stuff...

I seem to recall a thread about impacts being cheap but of good quality somewhere, so... what yall got? I dont care about finish. Needs to be 1/2 inch drive, deep well.

I have the Harbor Freight Pittsburgh Pro shallows in both Metric and Merican sizes and have used them HARD and I stand by them and say there the best for the budget!
I have Tekton Deep Metrics and there great as well. I found my set at Fleet Farm for $32 and its 11mm-32mm I believe but skipped the lesser common sizes.
I also found a deal at another fleet farm type store for a set of GRIP deep impacts for $15 on clearance and figured those would go into one of the cars for the same reason the just incase better then nothing sockets. both the Tekton and the Grip came in blowmold cases which is nice. I say if it's for the keep in the trunk and rarely used. Go with what ever you can find for cheap and use them. The Grip brand ones I got are not great quality but for $15 there ones that if I loose them I could care less. I am a tool nut and when I see a great deal I hope on it. I also like sockets to much lol

Amazon has a Dewalt set with case under $50 doesn't say what material construction its is just says metal

in this thread the TEKTON is by far the best set to get they work good and really stand behind their tools if you have a problem and a warranty replacement is a email away at no cost or having to drive one foot.

That link was for a Tekton 9pc LUG NUT SET 3/4"-15/16" 17,19,21,22 plus short extension bar.

If it is lug nuts mainly your concerned about a thin wall flip socket set might be practical to carry especially for certain wheels where standard thickness deep impact sockets may not fit

Ares, Tekton and Neiko all have sets for about $25 the first 2 brands are 5 pc sets 4 sockets (8 size options) and 3" extension/ The Tekton is a 4pc set has 3 sockets with extension bar and covers 6 sizes.... is no 22mm but 7/8" handle that and no 15/16 (personally have not had the need for that size yet)


I have the Tekton set. Comes in a nice small hard plastic case I carry that all the time with a Milwaukee Mid Torque in my SUV

Harbor Frieght has a cheaper set but it is no where as useful IMO only 2 sockets 17,19, 3/4 13/16" no 21, and 22 or 7/8"

Harbor Freight are fine for impacts I use them as a professional mechanic and have had absolutely no issues from them.

The Tekton ones (non flip) are not lugnut sockets, if that's a concern. They're just basic thick impact sockets in common sizes. I returned mine because I already have the sockets in regular impact, and I wanted thinner walked ones

Are you guys aware of the fact that Tekton impact sockets are CR-V? I don't want to get into the pro and cons of CR-V vs CR-MO steel, but you will not find CR-V in professional grade impact sockets.

Harbor Freight impact sockets with CR-MO are marked as "Pittsburgh Pro", and CR-V as "Pittsburgh".

OP seems looking for lug nut sockets and shouldn't cost $50 for a small set. I have OEM non-marring lug nut sockets, bought on sale for $10:

Well, one thing thats been mentioned a few times is thin walled sockets. Is that necessary for lig nuts? I feel like I havent ever used them in the past...

But yes even though I'm going to use them basically fir lug nuts, I see that I can get a full metric and sae set for the price of the tekton lug nut set. Better too many sockets than not enough...

Guess it would all depends on the vehicle and the type of wheels used

But it is just deep impact sockets your after sure can't beat having a full set of each metric and standard.

why do you want to carry a set of sockets around in a vehicle? unless you have multiple size lugs, just carry a socket and a breaker bar.

a spare breaker or a hf special would be fine for a bar...buy a new sunex or used from ebay socket if you dont have any laying around

I do have a dedicated socket for my vehicle on the impact gun, the "set" would be more for helping others, such as the man putting his spare on the front of his front wheel drive car on the side of the freeway, in 30 degree weather. Call it my inner boyscout coming thru, but I know for certain I was dressed for the weather and had a good tool to save time, whereas that guy changing his tire had a long sleeve. Thats it. So thats was my thinking on getting a set as opposed to just the one for my specific vehicle

I've been using flea market unnamed type for 50 years. The last time I bought a set, it was $10. They do wear out eventually but so do high end. I've never cracked one. I have broken plenty of chrome sockets though. Just normal use. Impact sockets are just not a place to spend a lot of money.

nothing wrong with being prepared...especially if you have the room i guess! the 3 piece flip socket deals should handle a good many vehicles.

I feel like the OP is alot like myself.
Being prepared and wanting to be able to help someone if possible.
I keep a full set of impact sockets in my rig all year round with a long breaker bar.
I go this route because i've ran into cases where lug nuts where 22mm and 17mm. The flip sockets are good and all but the size you need isn't always there. Where as a full set your able to handle any almost.
I admit I kind of went overboard and I carry a set of the Pittsburgh Pro shallows Metric and SAE. Along with my socket tool kit that has 1/4 and 3/8 sockets as well. I have had bad days where I was stranded and cars kept zooming by. That is why I keep a full set with me so I can handle almost anything I need to. Plus who doen't like being able to help others?

Yes, I would go with thin wall for your use. I'm kind of a wheel guy and a good percentage of wheels will get marred by a thick socket, some will outright not fit.

The last time I helped a guy with a flat tire, the look on his face was like I saved his life. The widowmaker lived up to its name and gave out; I got the bottlejack out of my Silverado and got him back on the road.

I quite agree, in todays world doing a good deed as a non professional, non qualified, non insured could leave you destitute.
certainly need do it with some due diligence and only when truly necessary .
Is a mess of a world unfortunately ...
Have elderly near me who struggling maintain their land, neighbour helped and had legal trouble due to bit of yearly hassle they had with boundaries and access that escalated .
amount of unreasonable behaviour you can get from joe public, police and local officials over things that simply good sense and should be waived as a good logic/deed is discouraging .
