Slow, those jaws are not that bad.---Outlaw is right, stick a wire wheel in a drill and apply some pressure.---A wire wheel will get a whole lot more out than a brush.---A lot of guys would love to purchase a vise with jaws that good.---If you're still not satisfied, get you a little triangle shaped file and sharpen up the teeth a bit.---There is enough teeth there to keep the file in a strait line.

Prentiss No 22 and stand coming along. I couldn’t decide on paint but went with this gray.
Thinking about doing black for the lettering.

I got a beautiful Reed 103 today. Somebody really took care of this little guy. The vise doesn’t have a hammer mark on it and the original paint is in good condition.67331fe4a134e99fedf14d4b932e283c.jpg59887186bcb05d6da272e4afcf2035d4.jpg3f1fa4cc58c3499400c6bd71f1328d49.jpg

Here’s a pic of a Wilton 350SJ I recently was fortunate enough to pick up. It didn’t seem to get much use at all. The pin on the back is original and is reverse threaded so it can be removed with a wrench if it gets stuck from non use. I believe the swivel locks to be original as well.

Snuck out during city lockdown and before state wide lockdown on monday for this interesting 80 mm jaw width vise.. laminated and riveted steel plates make up the static body (opens to the back). Never heard of a company called DoKo, maybe eastern european? Gotta soak that in evaporust and after thst in some waxy oily stuff to prevent rust jacking. Still a very nice unique vise for the collection.

Also got two more 80 mm vises, lovely VS1 and a small blacksmith bench vise (that's what I call em) as replacement for my big 120 mm one. While I was at it I filled most of the trunk with a VS6 6" (not pictured)

I posted this Wilton the other day with questions about the jaws not looking normal. It was recommended I stay away from it. I went and looked at it and sure enough it looked like someone cut the jaws on one side. The seller was super apologetic and said he was going to list it for less. I figured it was still a very good useable vise so decided to pick it up.

I ended up putting it in the Bridgeport and cleaning up the cut marks on the side, the anvil area and the top of the jaws with an end mill. I then sanded all the areas I cleaned up.

Over all I think it turned out good. It will never have the Wilton collector value. But that’s ok because I didn’t buy it to sell it. I bought it to use it

Looks good next to my other 400. Luckily I think I have a lead on a swivel base for each. Hopefully that will pan out

I really like factory correct stuff. Bikes, cars, toolboxes, etc.
Can anyone tell be which type of bolt (type of head, markings, alloy, etc.) to use on this 2 inch Wilton where it connects to the Power Arm?

Also, looking for a Power Screw Wilton to buy.0d5d213c432de417e58ad187315038ac.jpg831928bc2ef9b2ada2ec592a843f7293.jpg

Picked up the semi brake drum stand for cheap. Going to cut the top and bottom off of the vertical pipe and redo them to clean it up. I think that I'll mount the base from underneath the drum and cut the top to fit.

Was going to put the old Wilton on top of it but then found this Prentiss No 22.

Just finally got the Prentiss taken apart last night. The swivel jaw was the most difficult to get off.

Finished. Stand should be done next week. IMG_3863.jpgIMG_3856.jpgIMG_3857.jpgIMG_3858.jpgIMG_3865.jpg

Here are the after pics of my Chase Parker jaws. It will take a ton of filing to make them look new, correct?

Nice work on your Prentiss, how are the jaws? Like your stand too, I have made several stands using the same drums and they work well. Look forward to seeing your project finished.

Thanks KMScott. The jaws are really good. They have a few hacks in the top but overall good. They have a lot of bite left on the face.

The stand is taking longer than I hoped but will be nice when it’s done.

Thru-Hika - that Wilton SJ looks great. I don’t think the swivel locks are original, but those are easy enough to replace. Nice find.

Smitty - that little Reed looks untouched. Am still looking for an oval badge.

NCgun - that Prentiss 22 turned out great. Very nice job.

Not mine, but spotted on the bay UK - Massey-Harris 'Tractor Service' vice markings 'M H, NIKON (nothing to do with camera maker Nipon Kokagu, I'm sure) MP-3 (nothing to do with music streaming) Patent Pending' - looks big, but can't be sure of size.

Unlike most UK vices, I guess this will be expensive (all those poor farm boys and a few girls who collect tractors).

as you may know Massey-Harris was the UK/Canadian/US tractor maker (also with Ferguson). I don't think it will be linked to the US Massey vise (woodworking).

I'm the one who recommended that you walk away from it, but after seeing your restoration and hearing your reasoning, I'd say you made the right decision as long as the price was right.

It should be a great user, with or without the swivel base.

I thought it looked like my 143. I don't see too many of them. If you search this thread for "143B" you will see my 143B along with a repair I did and a swivel base retrofit I did from a newer Rock Island.

I did check it out. Interesting. My 143 needs some care, I have plan but it'll be a while before I can attempt it. Part of the plan was cast a swivel (old style) base. I had some luck and found a complete though derelict 142 which I'll make a pattern from the base.

Vise - I just posted it for interest - I've spent my Christmas vise money already and it's a v long haul from here.
But it is cool - I might point it out to a friend of mine who's an old tractor boy.
No idea who made it, possibly Massey-Harris or Massey-Ferguson in USA,UK or Canada themselves - own foundry and all the other machining in the works - any idea what the built-in tooling might be for? - shaped anvils for straightening king-pins, track rod ends, and the hole for removing a cross-pin?

Here is a little vise that comes in handy when working away from the shop. Usually used to hold small pieces of wood for shaping when I'm working on a client's boat. It secures to its top using a friction fit slide I fabricated from aluminum and wood.

The vise itself is made of aluminum with steel rods and screw. It has a quick-adjust feature and is very well made. The knurled aluminum handle has been shortened so the vise will fit inside the toolbox.

That's pretty awesome - I love a good hack :)

I had that same toolbox until earlier this year

I picked this up yesterday, the widow of a long-time friend who died last year, gave it to me after I helped her do some plumbing repairs at her FL home.

I found a beautiful little Reed 102 the other day. It has 2” jaws and most of the original lacquer. If you look carefully you can see some of the original red paint on the lettering. The vise is stamped 1/15 and was well cared for over the years.7642b3ab677b13bc127e8956c5c95435.jpgf480bbbb5429def5608e950c2216bcd3.jpgd469e65e4e46d23855492f129d8f42de.jpg

What you are just going to tease us? No pic of it in use, holding wood with a plane or whatever working the top?

Clever idea, I imagine they don't like the idea of a clamp on vise on the galley table.

That toolbox carries some very heavy items: drill index (1/16"-1/2" by 64'ths), specialty drill and countersink kit, close quarters drill (also used for driving screws), pan head and flat head sheet metal screw kits, etc. So the box is quite heavy and stable when using the vise for planing, drilling, shaping, sawing (often compound angles with Japanese saw). Often work from a kneeling position, so the box's flatish top performs as a workbench of sorts, even when the vise is not deployed.

EZ, I have one of those light aluminum vises. I also gave one to a buddy. I like the idea of making it fit the carry tool box both for storage and use!

Thanks for the feedback, fellas. Ashamed to tell you how many decades I struggled while working without a vise of the job (on clients' yachts). Always just used the overdeveloped grip of my left hand as a vise. Finding this solution was a godsend. Picked up the heavy duty plastic toolbox while refitting a yacht in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The vise was an eBay purchase. Fabricated the mount using oak and 3/16" aluminum plate. It is through-bolted to a 3/16" aluminum backing plate under the lid.

Finally got around to rehabbing this 11-30-56 Wilton Cadet that I picked up this summer. There was a good spot of the original paint on the dynamic, behind the screw that I took in to color match. I filled in a few of the bigger dings on the top of the jaw towers with JB Weld but mostly left the "anvil" alone due to the deep valley the PO excavated. I mixed in a little red Rust-Oleum with the orange for the very subtle letter highlighting. I also used my old toaster oven to cure the paint--about 175 degrees for three hours--it really makes using oil-based paints much easier.
