I really like factory correct stuff. Bikes, cars, toolboxes, etc.
Can anyone tell be which type of bolt (type of head, markings, alloy, etc.) to use on this 2 inch Wilton where it connects to the Power Arm?

Also, looking for a Power Screw Wilton to buy.0d5d213c432de417e58ad187315038ac.jpg831928bc2ef9b2ada2ec592a843f7293.jpg

Looks like a couple repairs on that 23. I wonder if the swivel jaw is broken, or if they were trying to keep it from moving. Probably the former.

Found a beautiful Starrett Coachmakers vise last night. It has 4 1/2” jaws, opens 9” and weighs in a 100 lbs. it ended up being a four hour round trip but I’ve been looking for one of9ff81ba0d784bbf81df072fe10875ff4.jpgdd0cfed1f29a92e0c2f3c985d727687d.jpg5036c86d53b3388cc4ec831151803096.jpgd64bcd1267aaed764acc05fd8a0a6c4d.jpg these for quite a while.

Thanks VA, I was really happy that the guy held it for me until I got there. He had a lot of interest in it.

Smitty: scores again.
That’s a really rare model and considering it’s still wearing most of its original paint, it’s basically like finding a unicorn. Congrats!

I have a Western Tool & MFG Co. Springfield, Ohio Champion vise no. 33. I'm not finding much information. I did see where the company went under around 1944.Does anybody know anything about this vise?
Thanks
Rick

Western made some neat stuff. I had one of the portable stands that I just sold to a buddy.63b2efc48104892d0cae08b043df3377.jpgf11fe908472783da7f8b75e7b6454fee.jpgbe117878d0d0ae54f6c0e9e2c497a552.jpg

What would you pay for a Morgan 289 vise?

6" Jaws
170 lbs
No breaks, no welds
Missing 1 pipe jaw

Good looking vise.

Where the hell does that one pipe jaw always go????? Probably be in the $150 range for me. More if I ever found a combination vise with all three!!!

I know some 6" vises sell for alot more. A Prentiss 22 in great shape sold very quickly in my area for $350. Some valued it around $900. I agree when anything is broken/missing from an old vise it can cost alot for that one part. Maybe expect to pay $100 for a part if you can find a source/machinist.

If anyone can source that pipe jaw please let me know. I do have the opportunity to buy it. However, currently, it would cost me $400 shipped. Wish it was a local find.

Shift - thanks, I always like to find rare vises whenever I can.

b.Well - $400 isn’t out of line for a vise that big including shipping however this vise looks really well used. The sides of the jaw towers are rounded over and the dynamic jaw seems to be sitting lower than the static jaw. I would look all pictures over very carefully.

This is a power arm from the 70’s with the original paint and screws. The screws were painted to match the base and there are no markings on them. 8ae6a546b8a354caa2c8e22f22131932.jpg53443577a1a362caf7f369847a2da2e3.jpg

I also note that there are no clear pictures of the front collar, which may or may not be there - I can't really tell. The other thing that stood out to me, aside from what Smitty pointed out, was that the handle appears to have been chromed, which is certainly incorrect for this vise and leads me to believe it's not original, but maybe I'm just seeing things.

Mayer, thanks for the input. I wouldn't be turned off by a replaced handle and I do agree the handle doesn't match the age of the vise. The seller was very nice, sent me a pic confirming the jaw width (didn't have the model at that point), so I am sure would send more if asked.

I was born in Texas and have family all over the DFW area. I would have let you known about a Wilton 1750 in good condition on a nice looking stand down there for $175. I told my sister about it but she wasn't interested.

Thanks all. I hadn't seen one of these Morgan's before so was a good ride.

The old style morgan pipe jaws were single V and protruded past the regular jaws. So if you wanted to hold something tall, you needed to usually remove the front pipe jaw. So while separated, they tend to get lost. Morgan went to the current dual V design that does not protrude.

Here is a hint - Yost sells the pipe jaws for the 3xC series as parts. You might check the jaw dimensions on their web site and see if the would fit.

Nice one Smitty - funnily enough, just came off a long work zoom meeting with my tablet/pad attached to a similar (but not so vise classy) ball and socket rig I have on a camera tripod - tired of looking up everyone's nose but at least they can't see up mine.

In the UK there is an identical twin to this Wilton ball joint (hydraulic) still sold today - usually under Spencer Franklin or Spenklin (London) names (This small size costs about $350) - they also make much bigger hydraulic clamping joints (up to dockside scale).

They used to have a label noting their UK and USA patents for the miniclamp (1950s???). Did they make or license the Wilton version?

Actually, Wilton's biggest and strongest PowrArm was always British made. It was first offered in the 1954 Wilton catalog no-109.

It seems that they've had some sort of relationship since.

thanks Fierljeppen -- always so well informed. (as are many on this forum)

I'd back you to write "The Vise Book", but how many volumes would it have to be?

Smitty - nice finds on that Starrett and power arm. The Starrett is especially nice.

AB - very cool that you completed that series. They look great lined up that way.

Rusty - I really enjoy seeing your rare, small vise collection. A standing request for more pictures, when you have them.

12 - that’s a very nice vise. It looks like an Athol 626, which is the 6” swivel base machinist vise made after Starrett bought Athol. I wonder how much different it is than a Starrett 926.
