I purchased this a few weeks ago. I have not read any feedback on it, so I thought I would post the first. Its not perfect, but its a decent portable tool box for what it cost me on Amazon, they keep raising the price though. Its actually cheaper I think from the companies website now. Construction is good for an import box. I like the dual layer in the bottom section, even though the upper section is reinforced plastic. The opening and closing is not as smooth as some of the boxes I have had, but definitely not the worst either. If you watch their video turn off the sound (instrumental, ha ha), its sort of hokey and hyped but it does point out a few of the good features of the box. It doesn't come with any foam. I am not sure why they show that in the video. I would not hose down your tool box or stand/jump on it either.

I paid slightly less than that but now the cheapest place is the company website. I do think its a decent box for the price. I have had a few cantilever boxes over the years, but have got rid of them for one reason or the other. This one I think I will keep.

I have been thinking about cantilevered box for a while. I guess this can be gifts to myself NEXT Christmas. How is the thickness of the cast aluminum? How does it compare to those used in weber grills?

The aluminum castings are very nice and clean. I don't have a grill so cant compare. The hinges are a little wonky. Its not that they are not strong, I think they will do. It is that they seem to not be designed quite right to use the handle to open or close the box. You cant push up or pull down on the handle to open or close. You just pull both side open from their sides, and the handle seems to do its own thing and follow. Not a huge deal, it may take 2 seconds longer to open.

Yes I knew that before It was ordered. I am not disappointed. I was looking for a portable box and even snap-on's bluepoint offerings are now import boxes and double the price. I am more concerned with the build quality. I will still keep an eye on craigslist as there is always room for one more tool box, but so far made in the USA was not the end all. I got a huge cantilever box made in the Midwest used. It came from an air national guard unit surplus sale. It was probably a great box when new, but after 40-50 years of wear and tear, I had to let it go. I actually like this made in India box a lot better so far. If the USA one was new with fresh hinges, it may have been a different story. It was also huge and weighed almost 40lbs empty. It was not very portable when filled up.

Do you remember were the box said it was made?

Gedore South Africa used to offer a very similar cast aluminum tool box which I believe was supposedly made in South Africa, and also die cast.

The cardboard box says its made in India, but the aluminum castings have the name of H.W. Schmidt cast in them. That does seem to be a company in SA from a google search.

When I lived in the UK 30 years ago everyone had cantilever boxes from any one of maybe a dozen companies. I had a *double-wide* one from Talco for a while.

The last web article it says the casting company only makes the castings. So its made in India, from castings made in SA.
“We are happy to be a supplier to first and second tier suppliers who then do final assembly.”

I see. So it's like most of it is made in SA. But this doesn't make economic sense. Shipping all the aluminum parts from SA to India. Can't imagine SA wage is high enough to justify that. I think it should be completely made in India by a SA company.

TOPTUL makes a very nice version of this type of box and they make them in both natural aluminum and TOPTUL green

Al version: https://www.toptul.com/en/product-324619/3-Sections-Portable-Tool-Chest.html

Green version: https://www.toptul.com/en/product-346067/3-Sections-Portable-Tool-Chest-New.html

I just ordered in a few of these for some friends of mine who put together a little $6,000 Christmas order for themselves. I particularly like this box because my dad had one that he got after WWII. I always thought that it was sort of neat.

The Toptul looks nice, but the difference between it and the Groz/Schmidt box is that the Toptul is formed from sheet aluminum, whereas the Groz/Schmidt is made from die castings which are 2mm thick.

Thanks for sharing. I didn't realize there were any aluminum cantilever box options. I bought a Trusco recently. It's got some heft loaded up.

I don't sweat the small stuff. I am concerned about a tool box that does its job and is not too expensive for me to afford. I did notice that the video does show how to open the box up. That's exactly the way I have to do it. Its not hard. Pushing or pulling on the handle like on other cantilever boxes I have had does little.
