So I'm going to be making a 5'x5' barn quilt for my barn. I'm trying to figure out the best material and also best paint to use for long term durability. Luckily it's on a North facing wall so it doesn't get much sun which will help. I had thought about wrapping it with that 3m clear protector afterwards to help protect it, what's your guys thoughts? It normally wouldn't be that big of a deal and I'd just wing it but this will have sentimental value.

Might want to explain what a barn quilt is. Painting? Outside?

Nope not around here. We make real quilts lol.
Suppose the higher it is under an overhang will get less weather.

Barn quilts are kind of a regional thing.
Aren't they typically painted right on the barn siding? I would imagine you just use whatever exterior paint you prefer, and as it weathers it will look more authentic.

IMHO, you will get greater satisfaction by winging it.

My experience doesn't include Barn Quilts. Good luck on your endeavors.

I guess I'm looking for something that when I move, I can take it with me

Supposing you could find the right source, I'd try for glazed ceramic tiles glued on to a metal frame with 100% silicone caulk, or the urethane that glues in windshields. No grout.

A potential problem with paint is you have to buy several colors of exterior paint which could add up...thinking those are mostly sold in gallon sizes and the more $$ you spend per gallon the longer lasting the paint. Not saying the tiles wouldn't add up but I feel like its a more permanent installation and easy to get "a few".

Barn quilts around my area are a huge deal. My BIL has one, but someone made it for him. I'll see if he has any info on it. Our area has barn quilt tours. Basically it's a day of snacks at each barn, showcasing the barn, and getting to know people.

You also might want to talk with the Amish if you have any around your area about it.

Lots of amish but none have barn quilts. There's only a handful in this area that I have seen. I see a ton when traveling south and really like the looks of some of them

Figured i would update this, I ended up using 3/4 MDO wood for the quilt, and brushed on rustoleum oil based paint for the design. The frame I made out of 2x2 tubing and also painted it with rustoleum. I like it as it makes it a little unique.

My wife made on for my father a 7 or 8 years ago. Regular outdoor plywood, 2 coats of latex primer, 2 coats of latex base coat, then 2 coats of each color. It still looks like new.

Looks great!
I would have suggested latex as it flexes with the weather but too late now.
It looks phenomenal though, keep us updated as it ages.

Thanks for the comments guys. The way I have it fastened, I don't think it should move much, if at all. I wouldn't mind the weathered look anyways I don't think, but I'll enjoy the new look while it last

It's popular in some areas around here. Kind of hit and miss. Wife wants to do one for the front of the new shop building. I have a sheet of good quality exterior plywood that was a sign for a commercial construction project just during construction. It is well sealed so will probably just sand it a bit and paint on it.

That should work just fine. Quilts are pretty popular in the N. IL S.WI area. They even have self guided Barn Quilt Tours in some areas.

We were fortunate enough to have this done to our barn back in 18.

Is that an actual quilt block design? If it is, what is the name of the block?

No name, here's a couple better pictures. The frame really sharpened it up, I like this design because if you look at it close it seems like the lines are weaving behind eachother/moving sort of. Barn quilts aren't really popular around here, but there is a few.
