Merry Christmas Bret.

So good chatting with you and Mrs J today.

New pup is very sweet as well.

Oh, and you win the Lego wars for sure.

It was great to talk and hear your voice sir. Hope you had some good time off with Sally. And I happy to see you got your new rig.

Quick little update.

I hope everyone had some good time off. I have not really had any as of yet other than Xmas day and my normal days off but I have still managed to get some work done. Hopefully starting this next week work will slow down I and can take some extra days off here soon.

I got quite the haul for Xmas but I am not going to share it as I feel it is gloating and I do not like to do that. So I will just show a few things that have me busy with new projects.

First thing is this new Kreg standard size router table insert plate. I have wanted a professional one (one that is not shop made) for some time. Just never pulled the trigger.

So as you can see the shopmade plate I have made out of MDF is not of standard size. I am not sure why I did this.

The other problem is my shopmade one is 1/2" thick where as all the ones you buy are 3/8" thick.

50764539822_68ac0fcae6_b.jpgNew Router table plate by bjohnson388, on Flickr

My quick and dirty solutions was to blue my old insert plate into the table to fill the void so I could cut out a new hole for the new plate. If you squint you can see my layout lines.

50768703572_1d12451242_b.jpg20201227_163049 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

The instructions for mounting the plate said to put pieces of table around the insert to give you clearance in the hole. This is different than how I mounted my shopmade plate. It was a tight fit but it also did not mount to the table with bolts like this one does.

50767842548_a351e0cca5_b.jpg20201227_163055 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

So here are the pieces of plywood I used to make the template for the router to follow. With them snuggly fitting around the plate and they are held down with carpet tape.

Here you can see the carpet tape.

50767843838_328fa8dc00_b.jpg20201227_165254 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I forgot to mention in a previous photo you also put carpet tape on the insert and get it lined up with you layout lines so that it won't move while you are installing the router guide templates. Here the insert plate has been removed. The hole is ready to be cut. Or so I thought.

50767845123_02c3e11ce4_b.jpg20201227_165604 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Of course I got this far and discovered I did not have the proper 1 1/2" forstner bit I needed to drill the corners to match the plate. Sunday evening at 5pm I made the trip to Lowes and got one.

Then I cutout the hole with my absolute **** of a tool Skil jigsaw. I really need to upgrade and throw it in the trash!!!

50769201202_3d5456e971_b.jpg20201227_181108 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

At this point I discovered I needed a 3/4" long pattern bit to cut the 3/8" deep rabbet and low and behold the only one I have was 1" long. So another trip to Lowes was in order but I was not going back. So I went inside for the night and starting working on the most amazing gift my wife has ever got me.

Finally got the new hole cut for the router insert. If you look at the corners I messed up on two of them. Remember how I went to the store and bought the new bit so the corners would match. That went out the window while I was routing and I forgot about out on the corners and milled them wrong.

The plate does fit the hole really nice other than the corners being ugly and my template slipped on one side.

20201230_192951 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20201230_193000 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

The details on this thing are just crazy!

20201230_193009 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Cutting the hole for the insert was a little nerve racking but drilling the holes for the router to mount was probably the most stressful part. I had to choose the plate with no holes because they did not list my Craftsman router on any of their predrilled ones. So you use the router base as you template to drill the holes. Nick I think this part would drive you crazy!

20201231_103450 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I used a center hole finding punch that fit snuggly in the plate to center punch two of the holes. Here goes nothing.

20201231_104128 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

So a little bit of disappoint me here. Even though I had a board underneath the first two holes the material still blew out. I am not sure what kind of plastic this is. But it crumbles really easy. The way I got the last hole perfect was I drilled a 1/8" pilot hole and then flipped the plate over and drilled from the top side so that the blowout would be on the bottom. Too bad I didn't know this was going to happen at the beginning. Now I have to stare at the blowout every time I use the router. What is that old saying about letting perfectionism go? I think this is one of those times.

20201231_105118 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20201231_105125 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Regardless of that I drilled the holes for the router to mount perfectly and here they are married together.

20201231_105129 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I really love this plate with the removable inserts. I am able to change bits from above the table and their are several different size plates. It comes with three and there are 4 more sold separately which I have already bought and are on the way. It also has a starting pin. Which I have never had. It seems like I should have bought one of these years ago!

20201231_105152 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Next up was cleaning the lift mechanism on the router it was all gunked up and not working very well for precision adjustments.

20201231_110439 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

All cleaned up and lubed with dry lube.

20201231_115957 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

What I used to clean it and then lube. (There's a joke there somewhere)

20201231_120315 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Beautiful.

20201231_121937 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

It's going to be really nice and much safer to have the proper size hole for each bit.

20201231_121953 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

All that work lead to this. I'll let you guess what it is going to be.

2020's shop calendar. I ended up with 740 hours total for the year. For those that are curious the F stands for Family time and the E stands for Exhausted! :D

The Kreg plate looks nice. Do you just set the insert rings in place or do they need to be screwed down? On my Rockler plate they have screws and I never switch them out because it's not very convenient.

Glad you got a good Xmas haul :D

I hear you on not sharing everything all at once, but please weave things in here and there. I think it's safe we all like to see cool tools.

Yes, I would have been very stressed about drilling the plate holes, too.

That is too bad about the tear out but like you said it will function fine and it's best to let it go. I think perfectionism can be a negative quality sometimes, or take enjoyment out of something unnecessarily. I know I suffer from that (and make a lot of mistakes!). When I was making the recess for my own Rockler plate I knocked it onto the floor and one of the corners dented. So I also have to look at a defect every time I route something. If it makes you feel any better. :D

In the end it looks like a nice upgrade!

That batmobile is something else. I am still super jealous of your lego organization and building station.

The shop calendar is incredible. It makes me want to start one but it would look very, very sad by comparison!

Did you know your thread is now 119 pages? That's because you preface a nice juicy post like that last one with "quick little update".:lol::lol:

Cheers Bret, way to kick off the New Year with some shop time and can't wait to see what you have in store for the rest of it!

Happy New Year Bret!

Great job on mounting the router plate! Nice Batmobile! Look's like a lot of quality time building it. Burton's movie is one of my favorite one, I guess it's the car:lol:

I have been dreaming about the new ecto-1 car. Maybe next Christmas.

You had a lot of shop time 2020, You had a lot done even when you’re busy with your work:thumbup:

Cheers Bret!

Thank you Nick.

The Kreg inserts lock in with a tool they give you that fits into the two holes. I don't think I would want a screw in one.

If you pull on my arm hard enough I took a photo of my entire haul I suppose I can post it. Just trying to stay humble. Never forget the days when I didn't have enough money to even buy a full sheet of plywood for projects.

BJ, great puppy pictures.

Thank You Kay.

Thank You T. I really would like to get the Ecto as well. I have the small one an it is amazing in itself. I am completely mesmerized by all the things people design with Lego. Of course they have almost an infinite library of parts to build with now. Not like it was when we were kids.

I am going to attempt to post more on GJ. I have been a member for almost 9 years and my post count is pretty low.

Proof that my shop does get messy for all those naysayers.

The new router table top is underway. It's time to retire my 1970's desk one as Dennis refers to it. I built it in 2007/2008. I can't even remember now. I have a pic of when I finished the fence so it was so time in the era.

The new one.

The new Kreg jig is ready to rock on its new stand. Not sure where I am going to store this thing yet. My favorite part other than how more efficient it will be and it has onboard storage is the dust port.

The Batmobile is very close. On Bag 20 now. 4 left to go. I have 3 other Lego sets to put together. I am going to have withdrawals not having any new Lego to build at night before bed.

That LEGO ride is super sweet and taking me back to growing up and always having a box or two of them under the Christmas tree. One of the few things Mom didn't drop off at my place after I bought my first house was the giant totes of Lego's....saving those for when grandkids are old enough to enjoy...she did buy most of them so...and I don't need another hobby!

I love your safety equipment attached to the machines, extraction is so important for dust containment and also your own health.

That’s a nice black car, wonder what kind of guy would drive it.

And pup..... no words needed.

Nice work on the new Router jig! Also that Kreg setup looks like a nice unit. Where is the dust extractor?

When you get done with the Lego, are you going to work on the model stash of yours? Me and the family got paint by number paintings for Christmas so we all been working on our paintings this year. Mine is a bunch of old cars by a barn painting so I'm looking forward to finishing it.

I don't recommend it as a hobby if you already have a bunch. :D

Yea I kinda cobbled that together. I need to make a better setup for the final attachment.

All I know is he is some guy that wears tights in public.

The dust extractor is right on the back by the clamp handle.

I need to work on the model stash but it just has not interested me much even with the dedicated setup area I made.

BJ, thanks, I love the puppy roll. Does she put up with it willingly, or was that just 2 seconds?

Everyone deserves a little snow. It makes them appreciate the other 3 months of the year.

Nice snowman! What did the puppies thought of the snow, I remember our dog went crazy from the first snow she saw:lol:

Forecast promised 16inc of snow in here for next couple days, I have to fuel up the John Deere I think:lol:

Enjoy the winter (and drifting) Bret!

Listening to the folks back in Texas talking about the snow is funny. Only downside is my Dad had to drive to Fort Worth a day early to get on that side of Texas before the snow fell.

As for your driveway, you could use a flat nose shovel in a pinch to clear off that snow. I've had to do it when I first got to PA. The driveway I first had was a steep hill and in order to get my ranger in the garage I used the flat nose shovel to clear two tracks for the tires to drive on. I wasn't about to clear the whole driveway with a narrow shovel though!

The last time I remember snow in Texas around Christmas time was 2011. I was in Texas visiting the family and it snowed enough that I built me a snowman in my mom's front yard. It was different for sure!

Either way Ya'll can keep the snow and I'll just deal with the clear days but 22*F temps at night.

Thanks T. One of the dogs was whatever the oldest one was like F this..It lasted for 2 days and that was enough

It was only here for 2 days. The day we got it we went down to 24* but the roads were dry by midnight so there was no ice.

I witnessed it snow in Yuma, AZ in the early 90s. Anything is possible!

It happens every once in a while but this is the heaviest I have ever seen here in the 26 years I have lived here.

I'm 60 miles or so east of you and we didn't have any stick. Amazing how different it can be on the same day.

Isn't mother nature crazy!

Okay so where were we. I left off with the "old" router table. I wasn't happy with that so I made a whole new top.

I glued up a new top with some more up to date Melamine Dennis.

Same procedure as before routing for the insert. You like my make shift dust collection hookup? It worked.

It got the job done but it wasn't pretty.

It fits. This 2nd time it came out real tight. Not sure what the difference was. I used the tape around the insert when I was securing the outside fences. I had to do some sanding and chiseling to get it to fit.

It's not perfect but its damn close.

Bottom side of the fence.

50807688451_1e1117efd1_b.jpgNew Router Table and Fence by bjohnson388, on Flickr

The old dust port. I reglued it together as it was falling apart. But I think I am going to go with a 4" dust port and hook this thing to the dust collector so it is going to get retire or reused somewhere else.

50807689406_84ca724aef_b.jpgNew Router Table and Fence by bjohnson388, on Flickr

The top of the table had melamine on both sides so I roughed up the bottom side with 80 grit paper before gluing it to the bottom piece.

50808408186_bb7f3e1893_b.jpgNew Router Table and Fence by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Before I glued the bottom on or cutout the bottom part for the insert I wanted to figure out where the hold downs were going to be for my fence. At first I was going to route through slots all the way and just use T-bolts but then I realized everytime I took the fence off I would have to reach under and grab the bolts. Which is not a big deal but if I put a cabinet under with drawers it would be.

50808524632_83b65a03fa_b.jpgNew Router Table and Fence by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Table is pretty flat.

Cutout in the bottom.

50810584356_6e147d249e_b.jpgNew Router Table and Fence by bjohnson388, on Flickr

And now they are married together. And in this moment I used everyone of my F clamps. And I said to myself - Self it's about time we bought more F - clamps. So along with 1 new router bit a month I am going to be buying more F clamps. I got a couple of Bessey 12" *********** ones today at Home Depot. So hopefully by the end of the year I will have a better selection.

50810699482_e4186ca4f3_b.jpgNew Router Table and Fence by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I made the bottom piece an 1/8" bigger all the way around and then ran a flush trim after the glue was dry.

50812280667_856910ed0a_b.jpgNew Router Table and Fence by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Okay this part stressed me. Actually I avoided it for two nights. Routing out the slots for the fence T-tracks. I measured where they would go and ran 1" wide tape to help with tearout.

50811425938_169e30581d_b.jpgNew Router Table and Fence by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I had a little bit of tearout but not bad.

50819077347_c89546f170_b.jpgNew Router Table and Fence by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I had to route an inch past the T-track so that I will be able to remove the bolts. This is the one design flaw I didn't like.

50819084777_1eb62e7fc5_b.jpgNew Router Table and Fence by bjohnson388, on Flickr

With one side routed I put the fence on and used a brad point bit to locate the center of the other side precisely with a brad point bit that fit in the hole snuggly.

50818270678_11689e0038_b.jpgNew Router Table and Fence by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Oh one more thing.

I finished the Batmobile after 10 evening of building.

Ok, Bret, I'm jealous. A lot of work and some awesome upgrades. Now you have me wanting to fix mine up.

Bonus points for doing it twice. And showing your mistakes. 2nd time came out perfect!

I do like the dust collection, helps keep it off the pretty truck in the background. :D

I totally see how the inserts work with the wrench now. That is super nice. Now I'm annoyed about my stupid screw-in ones. The offset collet wrenches look really convenient, too.

A few years ago when I was a total beginner I didn't know what clamps to get. Now F-clamps are my favorite, the 6" and 12" ones the most. Home Depot has a "bundle pack" with 2x 6" and 2x 12" Bessey F-clamps for ~$24. They sell single 12" for $11.99. So in the pack you essentially get 4 clamps at half-price. They have these in-store, too (at least at mine). I've slowly been grabbing these bundle packs every month or two to build up.

I recently discovered my router table fence is not perfectly square, I'm jealous yours is. You've given me a lot to think about!

Thanks for the big pictorial as usual. The new phone photos are looking great.

I don't have any guesses on the threaded rod but am excited to see what you have in store.

I'm guessing router lift for the threaded rod. If so curious to see how it comes out. I'm looking to build a table and lift some point to replace the beat up table I'm using currently. Your table looks like it is coming along well.

Thank You Nick. To be honest the square fence starts with the material prep. If the machines you use are not setup right well you know where you end up. My old fence was square and then went out of square. The Oak I had used moved a lot for some reason. This new fence has poplar for the face. It is about 8 years old now and dead on straight. So I guess some of it is skill and some is luck.

As for the clamps I did look at the bundles. But to be honest I don't like the handles on those smaller Bessey clamps because I don't have enough strength in my hands to get them tight. Where as the ones I bought are a little more expensive but the clamp bar is much beefier and the handles are big and really nice. I have some Irwins just like them but Lowe's has not had them in stock since the beginning of the year.

20210116_061906 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20210116_061852 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

So I definitely will be getting more of these in 6", 12", and 24". Goal is about 6 in each size should be enough.

As for the next project keep reading.

Thanks for the tip on the clamps. I like the few Bessey F-clamps I have so this will be a good way to get more.

Thank You Mike. Your daughter's room looks good and so do the tables you built.

Eric you are the winner! Should be the next thing on the workbench as of right now I don't have any dust collection on the router.

It's funny how you can go from this:

Snow day in Texas by bjohnson388, on Flickr

To this in a matter of 2 days.

20210113_143326 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

So I only worked 2 days this week and took off Weds- Sun. The plan was to decompress from work and get a bunch of projects done.

Router table is almost done besides the lift, dust box and I need to drill the 4 holes to hold down the insert plate.

20210112_180357 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20210112_180404 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

The one little thing I don't like is the exposed edges on the side. I will have to think of something. Maybe some iron on edge banding that matches the top?

20210112_180417 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Next little quick project was making a jig to make "jig" knobs. HAHA.

Start with 2 1/2" square blanks. Trace it out on the base of the jig.

20210112_181440 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Make a fence that fits snug around one of the blanks.

20210112_182348 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Drill a pilot hole in the corner for the 2" hole saw to go into to line up.

20210113_080926 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Also I secured it to the table. Which I never do. Kind like how Rian is always wearing safety equipment. :D

20210113_080929 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Make the first cut.

20210113_081223 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Blank inserted. The screw is there so you can get it out. If you look real close you will notice the corners of the blank have been sanded. This is to prevent side load on the drill bit and make it wander.

20210113_081246 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

After all 4 sides have been drilled.

20210113_081427 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20210113_081452 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Next step is to drill out the center for what size insert you want to use. These are going to be 5/16".

20210113_082414 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Then I ran it through the router and a 1/8" roundover bit.

20210113_090725 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Progression of the steps.

20210113_090653 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I forgot to take a pic but it just has one of those press in inserts like you get at the big box store. Installed on new router fence.

20210113_090801 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I made 6 but these 4 became 5/16" and the other two will be 1/4". These were easy to make and way more cost effective than buying store bought knobs. Even though I really like the Rockler ones.

20210113_152506 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

By the way not my idea at all. From this website. The guys has alot of amazing stuff. WARNING! It is a rabbit hole. (Nick).

So I have been in the shop quite a bit the last few days but I really don't have many pictures to show for it. One of the extra days I was off last week I devoted entirely to yearly house maintenance. I got everything on the list checked off except getting up on the roof to inspect and to clean out the dryer ventjack . It has been extremely windy here the last couple of weeks so that will have to been on hold for now.

I built this paper towel holder/glue organizer as one of my very first woodworking projects back in 2006.

20210116_110940 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I have always hated the stain that I used. It was just an experiment. I think it is chestnut or something. Anyways I modified it to hold 2 rolls and then I stained it with my favorite stain Gunstock and sprayed 2 coats of spar varnish on it.

Proof of concept.

20210116_122406 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20210116_123402 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Ready for stain and finish.

20210116_152411 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

All done.

20210117_145121 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20210117_145125 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Oh I also made 24 more knobs because I had the stock cut already and the jig was setup in the drill press so why not. Not a great pic but they have 3 coats of shellac on them.

20210117_161608 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I got a wild hair and made a double towel holder for the auto workbench too. It still needs a finish put on it.

20210118_095457 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20210119_175312 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

No sun pics but I did stroll the kitchen one morning to find my wife sorting Legos on to plates. I guess we are going to start eating them now. :bounce:

Morning Bret,

As always your work is of a standard I admire.

Looking at the towel holder, even just the way you added the extra section on, secured for life..... craftsmanship that most of us could only dream of, but so pleasing to see.

Lego tagliatelle sounds good.

Great job on the router setup:bowdown:

Maybe some pre-glued melamine edge tape to the ends of the table. Easy and clean, I have installed it with a heat gun and block of wood, doesn't need a ironing necessarily.

Great trick doing those knobs, look's sturdy and I bet the grip is nice.

The Batmobile look's super sweet! Need one of those now:lol:

What's your wife building? Or is she just organizing. Look's like a lot of fun;)

Nice job on the router table.

Also regarding the number of clamps F you want I think you forgot the 0 after the 6.:D

I'll echo the router table came out great! I can't wait to see what you do for the lift. I agree some iron-on edging would look nice on the sides.

100% agree on the smaller Bessey clamp handles. They are not the easiest to tighten. I've seen some people wrap the handles in tape but that's not my cup of tea so I'll continue on with cramped hands.

The jig knobs are super cool (and the jig to make them). Smart to make a bunch, now they will be on hand and "free"! Thanks for the link, there's definitely some interesting stuff on that site!

The paper towel holders are great. That's been on my punch-list for a long time.
