Ok I am going to try to post up here this year! My first score of this is when I stopped in Dallas at Nine4GMC's shop Monday and swapped an Atlas lathe mill for a Reed 106 he had. We had been talking about doing this for 4 years but for various reasons it never happened. The ICRR stamping likely stands for Illinois Central Rail Road. This vise was used hard but still has decent jaw grooves and works well . Now I need to build a stand for it!

I think I started the year off right! I’m hoping this is a sign that this will be how this year goes for me.

I literally searched marketplace and Craigslist for hours yesterday morning, because I had a free day. I was even willing to drive up to 3 hours. Needless to say I couldn’t find a deal I was interested in. So I gave up and went to watch the Alabama game with my father in law. Once I got there I decided to look one more time, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I opened marketplace and saw this Wilton 930 posted and only 5 minutes before. I didn’t know it was a 930,I only new it was a Wilton and it was about 5 minutes from where I was. I couldn’t believe my luck when the seller responded, and then gave me an address. My heart was racing the whole way there!

Sorry, kinda rambled on a bit,

I now present my $20 Wilton 930. Slide is stamped 6-47

I have several posts to make of finds but some I haven't even sorted out yet LOL. But this one today high on my list of favorites. Recently I have been collecting vintage Sears garden tractors from the 1960's and 1970's. These will be work tractors with occasionally being used for "play" LOL. I recently got a rear blade and wanted a set of of Ag tires for better traction while using it. I had picked up an extra set of rear wheels to put some new tires in the future since you can never find good small ag tires. Or so I thought. While checking out Facebook Marketplace I saw a set of tires and wheels that were only advertised as "tires" with a brief description that said "size in pictures". When questioned he thought they were for a Honda ATV but I thought I might have found gold. After a 60 mile trip one way I checked them out and they were a set of nearly new Carlisle 23-10.5-12 tires mounted on Sears wheels. For those of you not familiar with these tires a new pair would run around $240 right now and still have to be put on the rims. I paid 25 DOLLARS for the pair ready to bolt on! I also picked up some cast iron pans I will post later. And on the way home I saw old garden tractors by the road and stopped and bought a Sears SS12 tractor for $50, I will pick it up tomorrow.

Well, the weekend is off to a slow start, not surprising as much of the country is still in the depths of winter. And I have to say, that is a mighty fine jack, while Thorsen is one of my favorites to collect.

On the home front, I picked up the following at two out of three sales:

A trio of Snap-on overstrike sockets, K-D brake tools, P&C 100 and Proto professional ratchets, Proto sockets - including a very rare Proto LA 17/32", and a very interesting chisel with a logo I do not recognize:

a closeup of the makers mark:

Remember, we are currently one day closer to summer!
The chisel is an "Our Very Best". They were part of a hardware store line from my recollection. They also made hammers and squares.
bunch of chrome alloy sockets, and an odd plomb wrench
Have any close up of the stampings on the Plomb wrench? Looks to be a pre 30s double open end. It also may be an earlier "garage series wrench".

Looking for a Round Beam Plomb 1068 Double Box End Wrench

- Unidentified 1/4” ratchet (again, any ideas?)
No idea, but I’ve got one just like it.
AK, the ratchet is likely a GM Co. brand
As 3bay will recall, we had a pretty good thread several years ago on these. If you search on "Franksenstein" it might come up, AK. Very common. Not to diminish your find. If anything, the opposite. If everyone doesn't have (or at least see) at least one of these, they are doing something wrong! HAHA. That's how common they are. Pretty cool little ratchets, too.

You are correct. Spencer, Hibberd, Bartlett & Company. Like an early Simmons Hardware ("Keen Kutter") or Belknap Hardware ("Bluegrass"). And, like those, their brand name is very popular among antique houseware collectors. But they did also sell tools.

I must be doting something wrong, or maybe the sales were centered on the Eastern seaboard, and I'm 3000 miles away from where they are common? :dunno:

As for sales here, even if I were to risk it its  around ere...

First outing of the new year, a cold-morning sojourn to Quakertown. $14 brought home Nicholson USA & McCaffrey Philada rasps, Indestro Super tappet, DuroChrome dbe, Craftsman underline -V- tappet, Craftsman nested-diamonds grip waterpump pliers, short Keen Kutter nippers with interesting grip pattern, Bonney 8” S-adj, 1/2dr Bon-E-Con socket, 3/8dr Bonney socket, two Bonney does.

I’m really intrigued by the McCaffrey rasp. Cleaned up well, though I wish people would take better care of these types of tools - the teeth should stay pointy, but rolling around against other hardened steel flattens them. Aparently, Nicholson bought out McCaffrey in 1926. I’m not sure if they kept the name for a while, but the “Philada” and lack of “Made in USA” surely put the age of this back a bit.

Bit of history on McCaffrey files and rasps.

Blog on files.

My first sale of the New Year woo hoo!
First thought on glimpsing this under a table full of overpriced cheap tools was "Whaaa? A Craftsman sewing machine??"
Well, no. But it's in pretty good condition, runs, bearings tight and includes the edge guide, original blade wrench and a spare blade and Long C to boot!
At $20 I couldn't resist. Too bad it's missing the front knob. Anyone have a spare?

Today’s finds on my 4th pick of the new year:
Metal Makita Case with steel latches $4
Extension Cord Pigtail with 4 outlets $3
Klein D252-6 diagonal cutting pliers $1
$8 on the day

The Makita case is in excellent shape. Not sure what to use it for yet, but couldn’t pass it up.

AK,
I have a hammer head that looks a lot like that that is lightly marked "Kelly Vanadium". I will try to find a picture.
Tom

Found the pictures!
It is the bottom one in the first picture. The second picture is the markings.

That extension cord pigtail looks like something used in a data cabinet to power up tightly stacked devices (hubs, routers, etc.). It's short in length because it would be plugged into a single nearby power strip that runs the entire height of the cabinet.

Correct. They’re for computers. Says it will handle 13 amps. I don’t plan on testing it but figured it could come in handy at some point for $3.

That bevel square is not a normal one. Nice pick up.

Watching to see who or what you find out.

Some interesting finds posted today, lets keep the rhythm up and pull out of the horse latitudes of the New Year.

I spent the morning tracking down an electrical fault in my house (loose common) but finished that quicker than I had planned and so went looking on CL to see if anything appealed. I found one ad about a the contents of a home for sale, no pics of tools but the description mentioned them. So, off I went and I picked up the following:

All of that, along with seven cutoff discs for an angle grinder, was $22. There is P&C, Proto, Wizard, Penens, Challenger, Snap-on, SK, Barcalo, Thorsen, Brass Craft, a pair of vise grips, Craftsman, and I don't know what all else. I haven't finished going through everything and cleaning it up yet.

Thank you, OldPine!

That looks like a really close match indeed. I’ll do some cleaning and see what turns up.

Thank you again, and happy hunting all!

I picked up this Delta JT360 Jointer for $75. I found it three minutes after they posted it on Facebook and messaged him instantly. I met him at his storage locker where it had been stored while he built his shop. He recnelty upgraded and his wife had him post this one so it wouldn't make it back to the shop and I'm glad she did.

I'm staring to get into wood working and don't have a jointer. Reviews seem to be good, so I'm happy with it. The guard is missing the spring, so I'll fix that while I'm cleaning it up. There nicks in the knives, so I'll sharpen them and put it to good use. 20210110_001326.jpeg20210110_001319.jpeg

This year is now off to a great running start for me. Yesterday, found a honey hole thay has lots of other machinery that may be a source of machines for some time to come.

I originally went because of the giant motor you see below. It is a 20hp, 3ph motor, which is destined to become a new RPC (rotary phase converter). This size will allow me to run anything I want, and it was great timing for Pt. 2 (which I am picking up today).

While I was there, I spotted this small power hacksaw, and brought it home as well. Millers-Knuth Sawmaster 3001, works great. Covered in grease and grime, but functionally all there. I even saw it work under power. Considering the only other option I have for cutting stock is a porta-band on a pivoting vise table, this will come in very handy. Not the fastest, but set-and-forget.

The only thing I see that is missing that I would like to replace is the nameplate on the top of the arm. From looking at OWWM, these had the Millers-Knuth name and city/state, with another smaller tag saying Pat. Applied For.
If anyone has one at home, I would greatly appreciate a rubbing and some dimensions. The pin holes to secure it are already in the arm, and I can 3d print a replacement badge.

The motor was listed originally @ $50, and I brought both things home for $130. Seemed like a great deal to me. Last pic is a teaser of the rest of the machinery. Part 2 (todays pickups) to follow, and those are even better deals.IMG_20210110_093932.jpgIMG_20210110_093954.jpegIMG_20210110_094003.jpegIMG_20210109_103931.jpg

First pick of the new year for me. Went with a friend to a former implement dealers place that is being scrapped on Monday. I was interested in the report of some gas pumps. I bought 3 gilbarco gas pumps and a 1956 pickup box trailer for short money. I then stumbled upon the actual gas station the pumps came from or at least all the take-off porcelain.

A couple hundred later I own an early 50's gulf station. It took two trips to get it all and I still need to go back next weekend and get the pickup box trailer. I also got the boss some rotary hoe blades for yard art.

The first picture is as found and the next is after I unloaded at home after the 1st trip. I have 100 linear foot of the blue stripe so guess the station was 25 x 25. I have no idea what I am going to do with it but I couldn't bear to see it scrapped.

$25 for the pair, on rims??? YOU ****!!!

Can't wait to see and hear about the new tractor...

You got some great stuff there! The f1 bed is nice and the gulf station is even cooler!

I originally went because of the giant motor you see below. It is a 20hp, 3ph motor, which is destined to become a new RPC (rotary phase converter). This size will allow me to run anything I want, and it was great timing for Pt. 2 (which I am picking up today).

Well done Cruzan!! i have a 10 hp RPC where i bought a FBMP motor and a panel from American Rotary. They were having a sale on eBay and i got the panel for $200.

Here is my first score of the new year. A genuine Rockwell Portaband for $20 off of FBMP.
