The boy (11y.o.) helped me refinish a set of change gears for the lathe. We soaked them in vinegar overnight to loosen up the rust, wire brushed them to help it out, soaked them in baking soda brine to neutralize, air blew them dry, taped the bores up, flit canned them with some rustoleum hammer finish, sanded the machine surfaces back clean, and oiled the teethe and exposed metal to keep it from oxidizing again.

I think they also reduce underbody drag. It's an effort to help improve fuel economy. I agree being able to remove a small portion of access cover would be ideal. They hosed that idea on my fusion. The oil plug is on the side of the pan. This causes it to drain with a nice long projected stream front to back. I was going to make a smaller access panel until I noticed this. I would need to add a feature or part to make it drain straight down. The oil filter location also isn't located in position that would make access holes a good option. Looks like I'll be removing the cover for several years. That is unless I get lucky and win the lotto. A new family car sure would be fancy!



Last night I was looking at the mysterious wiring issue on my wheelhorse 520-H. Tonight I'm off to poke it some more. I might be on to something or it's just tricking me again. Here a poke, there a poke, everywhere a poke poke..... Seems to be my general ability to diagnosis tricky wiring faults. Look out sparks.... Cheers,

Swap the drain plug for a drain valve (Fumoto or EZ). Get the hose connector for it. A short piece of clear vinyl tubing will then drain it exactly where you want it drained.

Had a brain fart is what I did today.

Walk back over to bench & pull out a small ziplock bag for the Nylocs. Take care of that, put Allen wrench & GW wrench in the black plastic tray for "tools that need to be put away when I get around to it later"
Go back to bench & what do I find sitting RIGHT ******** THERE in plain sight next to the hardware cabinet??
The original bag of Nylocs AND the bag of 10mm Stainless washers...


FFS... Getting old *****.


On the upside, I had a perfect poop this afternoon so I have that going for me...

The sad part of this story is my recognition of just how familiar it sounds.

I hung a shelf over my workbench in my 10' X 20' garage/shed. It's 1-1/4" X 3/4" finger-joint wood spaced-shelving, from Ikea. It's 2' X 8' and I used Home Depot brackets. I was pondering making some brackets to hang it, but at $11 ea. for 5 I needed, buy 'em. They're through-bolted to the galvanized steel framing of the building. I'm only using the space for bulky, but lightweight things. The wood 2' X 8' is an Ikea piece I got for free. I may place a 4' FEIT LED two-bulb shop light below the shelf. The area is pretty-well lit, but I think it would help to make the workbench, an elderly Craftsman drawer/shelf unit, brighter for work.

Continued working on a 3 lb. drilling hammer I rescued from a garage sale early last year. The hammer head was really loose, so I cut it off from the handle and drove out the piece in the hole. I used a hack saw to make a grove around the handle to mark the height of the head. Then I used a four-in-hand rasp to slowly grind the handle to fit into the head. I have worked on this for several months, 15 minutes here and there, to get the handle to fit without chewing off an excessive amount of material. It's really low priority, but I have wanted a shorter handle drilling hammer for a long time. Today I spent about half an hour on it and got the handle fit where I want it. Now if only I could find my wedges. I'll take a look tomorrow, it's 45*F in the garage and I am freezing.

Funny story....I let one slip throw my fingers while removing it from the packaging. This was the first cut that tried to filet my pinky finger. In the process of trying to glue it shut (New Skin) I spilled it on the knives in the sink. The second cut on my pointer finger was from trying to remove the goo from the knife blades. I gave up after that....

I hate those plastic packages, but this was actually packaged rather nicely. Each knife was in a plastic sleeve with a rubber tip on the end. I let the last knife slip through my fingers removing it from the plastic bag/sleeve. Oopsie

I like how you think! It is a good idea, but I wont install one because it still doesn't fix the oil filter location. Hopefully I can send the car down the road before too long. I don't dislike it that much, but its getting tight for the whole family.

Only 4 stitches with a 5/8" spade bit, seems like he wasn't trying very hard in the first place. Shoulda got one of those ones with the screw pilot, it would have blasted through there in no time!

I turned (literally) a rusty chunk of plate steel into a cute little adapter to let you connect a fancy vacuum flange connector to a 1/4" NPT vacuum gauge (minus the actual NPT threads, since I didn't have a tap handy). All that effort was so that the guy coming to test the sweet vacuum pump I was getting rid of could be confident that it actually pulled vacuum. Turns out we didn't need it and the 3/4" NPT adapter he found connected directly to the pump well enough (we think it has British pipe threads).

Why get rid of a sweet vacuum pump you say? Well I salvaged it years ago and I've been kicking it around and tripping over it ever since, just waiting for that someday-I-might-need-this project. Realizing that someday probably wasn't coming any time soon and that I could really use the space, I finally broke my own rule about selling "found" tools and listed it on Kijiji. I don't like the karma of selling stuff that falls into my lap for free, I usually try to give it away if I can't use it. Then this guy comes along and offers to trade me an old Rockwell Beaver 3400 lathe for it. Trades don't count as selling if you ask me, so my rule is only a tiny bit bent but not broken!

I did specifically offer to consider trades, especially for wood lathes, and I've been hemmin' and hawin' about finding a 3400 for ages now. This one is in near perfect condition with all the standard accessories (even the tailstock knockout bar and surprisingly clean dirty paper). Now I just have to figure out how I'm going to fit it into the already overcrowded shop...

Did I mention this all started when I was trying to get rid of something to make more room?

I think you are correct! I was using rubbing alcohol, but that required a little elbow grease which lead to the second cut. I'll switch to the more powerful stuff if I have to remove more. Good idea!

Yesterday I wrapped up this weeks video. In the video I troubleshoot and fumble through a mysterious wiring issue on my Wheelhorse 520 lawn and garden tractor. I will address those issues in a future episode as the wiring mystery consumed the majority of the video.

So far today I only checked the manufacturer of my new titan wire crimpers. They are made in Taiwan. I hope to get out in the garage later tonight.

No I didn’t take them, guys cut a touch off each sheet and were tossing them in the roll off container. Asked if I could have them and they brought them over. Gave them a $10.00 as a thanks. Will cut them up and install them in my attic across the joists. Need a little yearly storage for Christmas items.

Attics in Florida don't treat Christmas decorations well. I've seen things melt that I never knew could melt..lol And if it doesn't melt, it gets brittle and falls apart.

Ohio garage attics aren't much better, lol. When I first moved here, I thought I'd be smart and install my garage security DVR in the attic. That summer, the UPS overheated and the battery burst, the date-keeper battery in the DVR burst, and the hard drive died. The DVR case was so hot you could fry an egg on it. I don't keep anything up there anymore.

Last night I had strong ententsions to workout, but didn't get into the garage until late. Ended up skipping the weights and installing the new router I purchased for the garage. I needed a better signal for my Ring security camera install. I may have watched an episode of Rust Brothers on the garage tv strictly 'to test' the router. Hoping to try again this evening.
