Looking to build a 30x45 garage this spring and I and starting to get quotes for the footings

First one I received for a 10"thick x20"inch wide 2 #4s and verticals placed for icfs
$3,100

For the excavation they want $3000

My question is, is that a normal excavation cost? it seems high to me but I am in the cold North so they do have to dig past frost

My solution was: 1 mini excavator $300 for the day's rental, and 1 rotary laser level which I bought, think it was $400 which I think I could sell for close to the same, but keep it for future projects.

The only way you are going to find true center is to

a) have a drawing of the foundation detail
b) get 3 quotes for a) above

I have done a ton of foundation work up in the barren rectangle. I was born there. If it was my garage I would wait until it thaws out. You will get a much better quality job at a substantially reduced cost. Doing concrete work with frozen ground is a real PITA.

I think he's getting quotes now for work to be done in the spring. It wouldn't make sense to try to break ground in North Dakota in January.

What's your frost depth there? It's probably at least 48 inches, so that's a fair amount of digging to be done. If the soil is rocky it will be even more work.

Here we'd do a trench footing. Usually put spacers on the chain so you get an 8" trench. Form up the slab and do it all in one pour.

The way he stated it could be taken either way, I guess.

You must be somewhere that doesn't have building codes or footing inspections.

We do what works. I've dug the trench for a bunch of buildings 4x the size of the op's. It's effective and cheap

I understand that. I just know it wouldn't work here if it had to pass inspection.

I'd trench a footing for that building for $500. If you don't have a nanny building department to deal with. Can't imagine North Dakota is much worse than Iowa for regulation

It is in the county but it does have to meet code I just think anything over $1000 is asking to much for excavation.. I need to call independent excavators I'm guessing

3000 not bad, once you think mobization, equipment, insurance, workman comp, labor maintance. but you can do cheaper
