Moved into a fixer upper, garage door is 12' X 16' with 6 panels (2'). All the hinges next to the track are #1, some bent, one broken.

I want to replace them but the diagrams I see are for smaller doors. From the bottom up, which panels will be number 1, which number 2, and which number 3? Any links to to diagrams/explanation would also be appreciated.

Thanks

2 inch rollers or 3"? If 2" they start with #1,#2 etc until you get to the top fixture. Unless it's an overhead brand, their first hinge is #2 then up numerically ussually

If 3" rollers they start with #3 hinges then go up. the first hinge is between the bottom and first intermediate section and get numerically higher as you go up the door. You'll end at a #7 or #8 hinge before you get to the adjustable top fixture.

Also, dont mess with the bottom fixture attached to the cables, 16x12 (you said six panels) springs are pretty beefy if its insulated.

Sorry, I'm trying to wrap my head around this. My hardware store has 3 types of hinges stamped with a #1, #2, #3 and he said the #1 goes at the bottom and on up.

I'm guessing because of the size 12x16 it's a commercial door. So I Googled commercial doors and ended up with some articles about Green Hinge System, and all the hinges look the same, and not different styles like at the hardware store. Looks less confusing than Menards/Hardware store.

Have you heard of them, can I use them on the type of door that I have?

Thanks

The track tilts back(into the building) as it rises, the higher the # on the hinge the deeper the offset to keep the door tight against the door frame/seal when it's closed.

Looking at your door, at the very bottom are the bottom fixtures where the cables attach. At the top of that section is a hinge, should be #1. At the top of the next section should be #2.

If your door is 12' high you should have a #5 hinge below the adjustable top fixture.

IMHO, Many of those hinges are generically interchangeable.

Call your local Garage Door repair shop and give them the information on the hinge, or take them a sample.

This forum is awesome! Thanks, I've been doing searches online trying to figure out the hinge thing and now get it after one post here.

All I've seen is #1,2,3 hinges in the hardware store/Menards so assumed there were no #4,5,6 hinges and each panel used either a 1/2/3 all the way up.

What really helped was the link to Garage Door Hinges and seeing hinges all the way up to #12.

Thanks for the question about what size rollers I have, didn't even think they were different sizes. At least now I have much more info to get started on this project.

Really appreciate the help, Thanks!

1,2,3 is what a normal 7' home door uses.

Don’t know if anyone stated but the hinges in the center of the door, ones not on the left and right edges are all usually #1 hinges.

This right here is important information. Going to modify GREEN HINGES to fit my Wayne Dalton. Which requires all the center pinch proof hinges to be replaced.

I know this should be obvious but in what WHOLE should the roller be placed on each graduation of hinges ?? Toward the inside or towards the door ? And WHICH way is up ??
Numbers on hinges but no arrows
