I’m out of the game and all my tools have to go. I’m selling everything. I’m not sure how to move forward with posting all the Snap-on tools I have. To me it’s a massive undertaking but maybe you guys have a better idea of how to go about getting this stuff sold? I’ve posted for sale adds on GJ before but nothing like this. Any help or ideas from the crew would be awesome!

Balance the value of your time with the value of the tools. You can likely sell it all as one lot but it will need to be priced so the buyer can break the tools up into small lots, take the good photos, write the listings, package & ship the tools and make a few bucks doing it.

If you want to sell everything for top dollar figure the time commitment & cost to make it happen and make sure it's worth it to you.

Also makes a big difference if you want/need to sell everything right now or if you can sell a little at a time for the next few months/years.

As you probably already know, to get top dollar you will have to list individual tools and individual sets on eBay. That will take a lot of time.
An auction house will do all of the work and give you one check at the end but that will be a much smaller number.

There might be a GJ guy near you who buys tools in lots for resale. There was a GJ member in Oregon for example who used to do that but he got himself banned not long ago.

If it was me........

I would go to one of the online auction companies. Tool prices are quite high these days. They can break up your tools into much smaller lots and get a higher price.

I am watching two auctions this evening, one near me in Minneapolistan and one in Wisconsin.

I would not spend a whole day to go to these events if they were onsite auctions. But I can sit here tonight watching tv and relaxing while keeping an eye on the lots that interest me.

I picked up a few items at an estate auction last week. The company took pictures of all the stuff in the house, separated them into lots and setup a pickup time when done.

As mentioned, depending on your time vs needed monetary value, local tool dealers could be a resource. Quality stuff always moves before lower quality (even if just percieved). The local tool guys should have a better feel for the local market/clientele.

It winds up being a balance. Not many folks will want to buy large lots (because of duplication and the sheer amount of money), but if you let folks cherry-pick it's hard to sell the more unusual stuff.

I'd suggest making a list and offer discounts for folks who take more stuff - you get to combine shipping and clear more of the pile.

Please explain how you buy new at 40%discount. I haven't bought many SO tools in recent years.

I suspect Bill gets a student discount, as he takes a lot of classes at the community college.

Most folks don't get a large discount on new tools, so I wouldn't price based on a fairly small demographic. Typical used pricing starts at 50 cents on the dollar and adjusts according to condition and demand.

I see Facebook marketplace allows shipping now, though I've never used that option. Can't hurt to post some pics in this thread to give us an idea of what you have.

I would check into online auctions. The local auction house near here has been online since last spring. They are making more money on line because good quality stuff sells higher on line than at the standing Saturday night live auction.

In the end, it boils down to how much time, effort and headache/trouble you want to go through to sell.

After a break up and being unemployed I sold a 3/4" socket set.30 years later I finally put together another set, but no where near the quality. The one I sold was Gray, J.H.Williams and Proto, a step above Snap-On. You may never get back there again.

Snap on, other truck brands, and anything made in the USA id break into small lots/sets and put them on ebay. Even after fees thats your best option for the biggest return.

Everything else Id throw in a box and put it on market place.

Name brand power/air tools on ebay as well.

Throw any cheap power/air tools in thr market place box.

Anything too big to ship throw on market place as well.

Out of the game? :headscratWere you a mechanic and now your not. What is the back story here? This is pretty big step. Any chance your circumstances will change and you’ll want to reconsider.

I’m curious too. Even if you’re no longer a mechanic, won’t you still work on your own cars from time to time or simply need a tool for something around the house?

I met with KM223 today and bought some tools.,,to replace my stolen ones and then some he is ex-military and a stand up guy. clearly, highly skilled in his craft. good family as well, we have some other non-tool interests in common so I think we remain friends. very happy with my purchase. he was 40 min drive from my house but I'm glad i went. deal with confidence!
