Steel or Stick or Pole Barn?

Which structure is more ideal for my application?

The budget is tight and this is not the dream garage. It is only a place to store/park stuff.


- Located in Ohio (cold winters, humid summers)
- Concrete slab with floor drain
- Approximate size 30' x 30' x 10' walls
- Space will not be heated or cooled
- No running water
- Electrical only (lights and outlets only - no welder or heavy duty air compressor in space)
- No serious work will be done in this space (vehicle lift will not be in my future)
- Space will be insulated with either foam board or fiberglass batt insulation
- Primary use will be to park a daily driver vehicle, park off road machines, store lawn care equipment, and miscellaneous items from the house

What about interior wall finish?
Honestly Pole barn is going to be the lowest cost (many have fiberglass blanket insulation with plastic on the interior side).
Once you start adding "framing" to support insulation, interior walls, ceiling etc. the cost gets closer to stick built.

Pole barns are cheap and good, that's what you need. You don't insulate them with batts, though. Can't.

A pole barn sounds like it best matches your requirements. Although, depending on the restrictions of your locality, the look of a pole barn may be "sub-optimal" and not allowed.

Interior wall finish would probably stay exposed framing for a while and then one day either OSB/plywood or wainscot.

Those two points are opposing each other. You just described a lot more than 30x30 requirements.

Around here Pole buildings are usually in multiples of 12' for length, width is more variable since almost all trusses are built for the specific job. It won't cost much of anything to go to 36" and you pick up almost 200 square feet.

IMHO, If you can collect enough 55 Gallon drums they can be flattened into steel sheets. I have seen it done on U tube. They used some planks, a slab, and the weight of a pickup.

Those sheets can be bolted together in a manner that will form the shell of a structure.

I Guarantee it will not be pretty, but your cash outlay will be minimal.
