I am looking at a wood planer but it needs a TEFC 3 hp 230V single phase motor.

It has been quite some time since I bought a motor. Are they made of gold now?

I looked at Grainger and then hid under the bed.

Is there a better alternative?

If by 'as much as possible' does not include when suffering from sticker shock then check Amazon.

I don't do amazon. There are certain monopolies that I just won't support. I have been able to get by for over 60 years without a front step full of their boxes. I shall continue that trend.

Zoro frequently offers 15% or 20% off promo codes.

I don’t know what time period your memory of pricing is, but that’s reality. If you are a volume customer at granger, they have deep discounts. Zero is part of grainger, but 20% off is pretty good.

FWIW, commodities like steel have risen dramatically in the last 6 months. If distributors have dynamic pricing, that may be part of it.

I would never buy a new motor. Plenty of good used ones out there.

You can try Automation Direct. I have bought lots of things for work there. You can also try a local motor shop that is usually where I go if it's over 1 horse.

Why are you replacing it? Is it burnt up? Or is it because its a 3 phase motor? If the later, consider a phase converter. Easy to install and certainly less than a new motor. Check local craigslist for single phase motors too, but that's a popular size and might not be easy or cheap even on the used market.

If Brick and Mortar retail prices are too dear, then I suppose you're limited to craigslist or scouring your local metal scrapers where a lot of motors end up. Shipping for a 3hp would be crazy expensive now a days.

I always thought Grainger was too expensive, and didn't like their attitude, not selling to non-business customers. I don't know if they've changed that policy. Haven't been there in 30 years. I usually buy used motors, although anything above 1 hp seem to be hard to find locally.

Craigslist and Facebook marketplace should get you some good ones. If nothing else, three phase motors go for scrap prices and you can add a converter.

Where are you located? I have a bunch of electric motors for sale in upstate NY. I recently sold a 3 hp single phase motor that was in beautiful running condition, and currently have a 2 hp single phase Baldor 110V/220V motor that is also in fantastic running shape. Are you looking for 3 phase or single phase? Here’s one of my ads:

It's on a Powermatic Planer. They say nothing happens when it is turned on. Might be the motor, could be a simple fix like connections. Don't know yet but I wanted some ideas before I looked at it. I have plenty of smaller motors that I have salvaged from other finds but nothing that big.

Nothing happens is more likely the mag switch or the start capacitor.

"Newer" 4 post planer or older pm100?

4 post. I got a free radial arm saw once because they said the motor was shot. Brought it home, smacked the reset button and it worked fine.

This "throw away" society we have is good for scroungers like me. Nobody wants to or knows how to fix anything nowadays.

Lol. That is true. I managed to pick up dolamar/makita commercial chain saws (6400s) for pocket change because they were "broken". One had a bad kill switch and one had loose cylinder bolts. The one with loose bolts was brand new. They thought it had a bad crank...

Back in the day I got a top of the line microwave at a garage sale for two bucks because it was shot. Took off the small panel in the back, put in a new fuse, worked fine. People have given me cars for free because the cost of having a mechanic fix them far outweighed the value, or so they were told.
