all i want is a mid depth socket set in 3/8's drive, and maybe 1/4 in drive,, , why is this so hard? i found a carlyle metric set that i am going to get in 3/8's, but i sure can't find it in sae, driving me crazy. any know a good place to buy some sets like that,, that are the sort of mid priced brand name? not into gearwrench, as i had a set of deepwell metric and it was like they didn't fit anything right.

Try searching for semi deep sae sockets. were you looking for chrome or impact sockets?

Your most readability available options other than GW are SK, Gray and Snap On.

Mac used to market some, but they are pretty rare. I believe I have seen some Matco. Impact are easier to find than chrome.

And yes, you will have to use both search terms as noted above, possibly adding intermediate depth.

Here you go, Home depot may be your best bet. When searching for Gearwrench, they refer to them as mid length sockets.

As others have posted, Ko-Ken semideep sockets are extremely nice but, Gearwrench are fine too for a mobile set.

If you want impact 3/8 drive semi deep, look at the Sunex sets.

All my med length are carlyle. sae and metric. 3/8 and 1/4. bought them all at NAPA. ordered in the store and had them the next day. excellent quality IMO.

I have Gearwrench 3/8 and 1/4 chrome metric and SAE mid length. Grey Pneumatic 3/8 mid length metric and SAE impacts. Couldn’t be happier with either one.

I needed one to put a bumper on a Jeep once, just used a porta band and cut a cheap socket to what I needed.

Gearwrench, SK are who I have for Semi-Deep they work really nicely in a professional setting. I do know some manufacturers make their deep well sockets shorter than some other brands so you could also buy one of the shorter deep sets.

I have the S-K 1/4" SAE and Metric semi deep sockets. I also have the USA Craftsman semi deep 3/8" SAE and Metric sockets as well. I have a couple of semi deep Snap On 3/8" SAE impact sockets. Going to finish getting the missing ones soon.

And a comparison of the S-K sockets.

I'd make a critical survey of what sizes I actually need, and - if I didn't "need" a complete set - then I'd make the 4 or 5 sizes I would actually use.

I realize I'm going to get pounded on the "need" comment :Violent:, but older G-code Craftsman deep sockets tend to be full-length broached and can be gotten easy and cheap enough. Just cut them down to the length you need.

What I'd like to see is some quality super short sockets.

Quite a nice taiwan made set I found was from europe branded Trident
They done a 40mm long semi deep set 3/8 drive 6point wall drive 8 to 19mm no skip and also had extra deep sockets at 80mm length.
Has proved very useful and was sensible money even with shipping costs .

You don't see many semi deep taiwan sets and not many around 40 to 45mm length, most are 46 to 50mm length for taiwan coo sets .

I think you will find that Carlyle sockets are the same as GearWrench as Apex is one of the vendors for NAPA for sure

I have the GW metric in 1/4 and 3/8. No issues with them, but I wish the size stamping was easier to read.

For semi-deep 1/2" drive impacts, I cut down some Pittsburgh Pro HF sockets in a lathe.
Been working with them for a few years, lost a couple, but the price was right and it was kinda fun cutting them. Also soaked them in vinegar and took off the black schmutz and polished them,
