JBL: good to know you feel the same as I do about plumbing. i'll do my best to keep ours in great shape, but i'm only available for advice to friends cause it seems like as much as you try to do it perfect there are way too many variables including faulty parts you or the person bought thinking they were the best made.

I'm not sure if you are able to just do an HSA, but since we rarely if ever go to the Dr. we invest our HSA funds. I think at one time we had FSA until my wife's company transferred to HSA and we benefit from not getting sick each year.

looks like you and the kiddos are having fun in the snow while things are getting better inside.

cheers
I can plumb but I am not a plumber lol.

I don't know how the HSA/FSA deal is set up as it's through Mama Bear's work but she reduced our contribution for this year.

I have tried to make spending time with the kiddos a priority and although it gets to be a wild balancing act often it's worth it !!!

Any large mechanical items gonna get rebuilt fixed this winter?
I have hopes that the baler will get in there to get repaired and once we're done with the upstairs room and it's a little warmer the combine will get put in the shop to have a few things gone over. We sort of figured that we'd be doing mostly construction things this winter.

"Downhill with Dad" what a neat event that you and Miss Alyssa were able to do together.
I have a lot of respect for the time you invest with your kids.
Thanks for sharing.
I enjoyed "Doughnuts with Dad" with Miss Lily but the sledding event was quite fun for sure !!!

Thank you. I try hard to spend time with the kiddos and include them with things on the farm. I think I learned quite a bit from growing up on a farm and hope I can pass some of that on to the next generation.

Pops and I got the tin up in the still unnamed room upstairs. I think it looks alright :dunno:
50858212191_17938da95b_b.jpg

Mama Bear and the kiddos began painting the room upstairs. Lily painted everyone's names on the walls :bounce:

Leo had to paint everything he could reach

The walls are primed and we put a chunk of paneling up to see what it'd look like. The walls will be painted something the kids thought was good idea. We shall see how it looks when it's done :)

Oh boy oh boy I am quite excited to have this all set up in the shoffice :bounce:

Hey look !!! That skid loader from post 4135 has found it's way into my shed. 2004 Bobcat S300. High Flow, 2 Speed, Heat/Air, Gold Package and only 1,700hrs !!! I am stoked to own this monster :rocker:

Those rooms are looking good! A lot of has come along since the old days of just being an open field!

That computer setup reminds me of the old job where I used to analyzed so much data from the directional drilling tools, that I was literally begging for 6 monitors! But they only allowed me to have 3 monitors at the time.

Although one guy found a way to get 9 monitors ( Our shall i say 42" TVs) on his wall so he could do his work. If he was at his office late at night he would setup his gaming system so he could get some play time while waiting on the failed tools.

Nice shop office setup. I like the laptop stand. Making a monitor stand is on the short list for my next projects not that I work from home 90% of the time.

How many chicks have you put through your barn so far? Looking at grain prices, feed is supplied, right? Not your problem with the chicks, but that feedlot, good thing you have on farm storage.

So the primer went on the shiny side of the hardy board and is working ok without having to sand it a bit to rough it up?

great work as per usual.

I'm really amazed that the kids had a bucket and tray of paint in the middle of the room and I didn't see any paint on the floor or them. that picture of Leo stretching to get up high is PRICELESS.

The shoffice is 95% I'd say. Still needs trim around the room and around the doors but it's almost done. The upstairs room needs a few things yet but is almost there as well.

I can not imagine having 42" TV's as monitors

Thank you !!! After using it for a little while it needs a little revamping but it's working out quite well so far.

In the neighborhood of 880,000 chickens have come and gone through the barn so far :bounce:

The way the contract works is all inputs are paid for and I supply the land, loan, labor and light bulbs. It is my building so all maintenance and upkeep is up to me as well of course.

The steers are getting feed Enogen grain corn we grew last season and yeah .... I'm happy to have it with the spike we've seen in prices the last few months !! We have quite a bit to sell yet so we're fairly pleased with the way things are looking !!!

The primer went on with no issues and worked great !!!

We were all amazed that the littles did so well with the paint. They got only a minimal amount on themselves and a quick trip through the big sink in the utility room and it was all cleaned up.

Thanks for stopping by everyone. It's been a pretty crazy couple weeks with lots of stuff going on. A combination of a bunch of hoop jumping and paperwork for the new house this summer and moving my office up to the shop has prevented me from more regular updates. My laptop stays up here now and I need to remember to bring it to the house in the evenings !!!

Mr. Coffee decided to quit working so I took it apart and found a bunch of calcium junk had built up in the heating element. After running a drill bit through both ends and some #9 wire to snake out the corner it's working like brand new again !!!
50896507151_82e6ecb5f8_b.jpg

We decided the right place for the first aid cabinet was in the utility room near the sink. That way the squirting blood will be near the sink and not make a mess on my floors :lol_hitti
50896625272_fb2a6828c6_b.jpg

Plus then while patching yourself up you can look at my functional but messy plumbing. Dad the copper and it looks nice but the guy that did that pex needs to learn a few things I think ..... Somehow the hot ended up on the right :dunno:
50895793523_e0a876feb0_b.jpg

I moved the new skiddy into the skid loader shed inside the hayshed and it won't fit in there with the bale fork on. It's QUITE a bit larger than the 763 !!!
50895793543_e6274425cc_b.jpg

A whole new peep show arrived late last week so we have been enjoying the new little chicks. They're fun when they're little because they haven't developed the attitude of "go around me, I'm not moving" quite yet. I clap and they scatter and make chores nice and quick :bounce:
50896625367_8f000c1995_b.jpg

The half wall is paneled and Mama Bear has the trim primered. Things are coming along :D
50895793628_e661ef6bb7_b.jpg

50895793673_a798b5af10_b.jpg

We decided to leave it up to the littles to decide what they want on the big wall. "Grass on the bottom with trees and puffy clouds Dad !!!" I guess they have spoken :dunno:
50896507126_5fa9ce46c0_b.jpg

I guess this tire decided overnight that it was not going to hold air anymore. It has a pencil sized weather cracked hole in it and there won't be any repairing that. The other one is equally shot so new tires will have to be put on sooner rather than later
50896625252_0ba60eaa32_b.jpg

Today Pops and I got to cutting some pallet racking beams so we could make a couple of them longer to hold the seed treater. Oh and I acquired a "new" metal bandsaw :bounce:
50896507236_d470601e5c_b.jpg

They'll be reinforced with some 2-1/2" angle iron over the seams and should hold up just fine
50895793748_f5fee9d37b_b.jpg

I scored some commercial rubber backed carpet squares for $1/sq ft for the room upstairs so I'm pretty excited about that !! They're even the right color :bounce:
50896531331_1589e8c854_b.jpg

Mama Bear got the window deals painted and Pops and I got the tin cut that will be going on the top of the room to cover the rest of the walls. It's not that far from done now !!!

Yesterday we sat down with the builder we've chosen for the new house this summer and went over numbers. I'm not going to lie I was VERY nervous about this. I expected the house to be WAY out of our price range but it fell almost exactly where I hoped it would. We will be building a two story slab on grade SIP home with steel siding and roofing with all the goodies in it we wanted. We are absolutely STOKED that it all fell in line with what we were hoping :bounce:

Our basement carpeted with similar tiles - ours are purple. I love them!

Good nows on the house coming in at a workable price.

The shopoffice is coming along nicely and your office station looks like you can get some serious stuff done. you mentioned having 42 inch screens so I thought i'd send you a link of a member's thread where he's building a home and he has one of bigger servers and desk with huge monitors that i've seen. check out post #809 if you have a minute on his thread and his build if you want to spend a few hours.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=409988

very happy to hear your new home is going to be built in your budget and I really hope you have a honest contractor that delivers. you've been building some pretty big buildings so guessing you might have a good idea on who's a good builder in your area.

stay warm!!

Hi Mike,
Not sure if your using SIPs for your roof, but there's been issues with them. From what I remember you need to put another lay of 2X then roof sheathing on top of the SIPs to allow for ventilation. Otherwise you end up with rot.
I'll try and find the info for you -Ed

ventilated cold roof

Haven't found the engineer that explained that moisture will form WITHOUT any air leakage thru the SIPs. It's caused by ice damming which will happen if the roof isn't ventilated.

Yes, there was a couple on youtube that built their timber frame house with SIP's up in Idaho and they ended up using a "Cold-Roof" as well. I'm not sure they were the poster child for doing everything right but they were fairly open with their thought process and didn't want to spend money just for the sake of spending it. That being said they felt the finished product (the house) was super nice insulation wise and the feeling of being "solid". I also think they ran into some issues filling the channels between the SIP's with spray foam once the panels were assembled but again they showed the process warts and all for people to learn. Last year they dropped off the face of the earth when they had their child but I'm sure you can find the videos on Youtube if you search around.

We are excited to have the carpet down and watch a movie in it hopefully this weekend !!!

We're also excited about the house. I sure hope it all comes together smoothly :willy_nil

I've checked out his sweet house a few times and drooled over a few things. That sure is a nice place !!

I think this builder guy is going to be good to work with. He has been so far.

We're planning on a conventional rafter type roof for the house and garage. Buider guy Jim said he'll happily do a SIP roof but they really only make sense if there are to be vaulted ceilings, which we won't have.

I've seen some of those videos about roof's rotting out that weren't ventilated properly. Seems like a nasty deal to repair !!!

We've watched some of their videos in the past. Really neat to watch them the way they show so much stuff and don't hesitate to say what they think or why they're doing what they're doing.

The beam stretching is complete !! Well, mostly. Once the seed treater is in the center area I'll reinforce the top ones a bit more to handle the weight that'll be up there.

So. The larger skid loader is already finding weak links :willy_nil
50902418748_395e9dd9e8_b.jpg

When I carried two 4x5.5' round corn stalk bales my 763 Bobcat would come up in the rear before it would bounce and shake the bales around. This S300 doesn't seem to know the bales are up there and when you hit a bump they go flying. Pops hit a bump and the fork bent straight down and tore all kinds of metal apart !!! Side note .... I love this welding table and how its set up !!!!

Our first thought was to coax it back into the right place with the sledge hammer but after a bunch of "gentle" taps with a maul it was clear that wasn't going to happen. We're going to stick a smaller piece inside the tube and reinforce it all once the new fork tine sleeve is welded in. It'll be stronger than it was before, that's for sure !! We'll probably beef up the other side as long as we're at it.

My Mom got me a pair of boot brushes for Christmas and I finally got around to putting it to use. I love this thing !!

Missy the shop cat sleeps in a box of 6-3/8" torx screws. I cannot imagine how that can be comfy but :dunno:

Look what I found on a farm that isn't being used !!!!!! Triple mast, cushion tire, 5k lift with HEAVY forks !!! And it's only a few miles from home and he has a way to haul it to me. I guess I'm going to get to learn about forklifts now !!!

Im diggin the double-vise setup! How are the tires on the new Bobcat doing in the snow/etc? Im sure they are great on concrete or in the driveway but they aren't as aggressive of a tread style as the conventional tires.

Nice score on the fork lift, that will come in handy!
No kidding !! I think it will be able to lift things to new heights around here :lol_hitti

I have another vise that I plan to put on a reciever pipe like the other two so I can have three big vises if needed at the same time :willy_nil

The tires are quite nice but not for what we're doing. Pops picked up some new ones today that have a little more bite to them :3gears:

That forklift will be very nice to have in the shop. Though I'm sure you'll eventually wish you had bigger tires on it so you can get it stuck in the yard lol.

Is the International an 884? I grew up on a 444 and currently have a 484, they are nice tractors.

I had a similar situation, that kind of happened the opposite way, about a year ago. About 3 years ago, I upgraded main tractors to a McCormick MTX 120 with a McCormick L160 loader (really an ALO Quicke loader painted red). It came with nice bucket, but no bale fork. I bought a cheapo dual spear fork with 49"x 1-3/4" tapered forged spears, mainly because I could get it quickly. I was only carrying single 4' x 5' bales, so that was okay.

Until last winter, when I parked it after feeding one evening. I was in the habit of just dropping the loader to the ground quickly, which was also okay as long as the forks were level or tilted upward. This evening they weren't. The tips of the spears hit the shed floor, and before I realized and could get off the joystick, tried to pick up the front of a ~14k lb MFWD tractor. The forged spears survived just fine, the 3"x3"x1/8" wall tubing main frame did not. No pics, but it was ugly.

Tried to do some hammering, bending, and rewelding, but there was no saving it. Almost everything was tweaked, or worse. I nursed it through a few more weeks of feeding and did a complete rebuild in the spring. I only saved the 49" spears, and the Euro quick attach brackets, which were all undamaged. The new frame is similar in overall dimensions, but made of 4"x4"x1/4" tube on the bottom, where the spear sleeves mount. The rest is 2"x4"x3/16" tube, reinforced and welded a lot better than the first one. Pretty sure this one is here for the duration.

Nice forklift, btw!

The forklift "should" go the places it "needs" to and we'll see about everywhere else :lol_hitti

It is an International 884 !! I like it a lot. We went through it a few years back and the main clutch, T/A and lots of gaskets and seals got replaced/serviced. WAAAAAAAAAAAAY back on Post #2178

That poor fork didn't stand a chance !!! Thank you for sharing the story !!! It ***** to break stuff but it always feels good to have the welder in hand repairing it thinking the whole time "never again"

The fork repair has begun
50920849982_926fe2bd4a_b.jpg

I sleeved the 3" piece with a 2-1/2" piece that will go into the fork about 12". I think it'll hold plenty fine once it's all together
50920027928_69329af713_b.jpg

With enough booger welds it should hold together just fine !!

Doesn't look like a 3rd grader welded it together from this angle. Which reminds me .... I think it's time to start having these kids learn to weld and such so they can help out in the shop :lol_hitti

The kiddos wall is complete. Mama Bear thought the white puffy clouds would be too much so she just did a pair of trees. I think it looks great !!

Every floor needs a personal touch burred under it before carpet :lol_hitti
50920849822_b3f85e5dec_b.jpg

We read the pail and it said to pay glue over the whole floor and let it dry and then lay the carpet squares down. Something about walking on glue didn't sit well with us but what do we know ?? (Spoiler alert, it seems to have worked out)
50920027823_b61c5c4220_b.jpg

Crank the heat to help it dry a bit !! This little oil heater on low is keeping it a balmy 75F in here without too much trouble.

Nice find on the forklift. Their parent company recently purchased my work. Just don't take that cushion tire off concrete/blacktop (maybe bone a$$ dry compacted gravel) and it'll serve you well.

I'm hoping it'll be fine to run between the shop and hayshed over real hard packed crushed concrete. I think it will but we shall see :dunno:

I don't plan on taking it in the meadow to bring bales home but I have thought about it :lol_hitti

AWESOME FORK LIFT!!

are you walking on the glue before you lay those carpet squares down? was there any glue on the carpet squares or did you have to put glue on them too sort of like how we glue laminate to plywood?

that room really came together quickly.

best of luck on the home build and i'm hoping lumber prices don't go up any more.

stay warm!!!

I guess I left that a bit vague didn't I !! No, we did one row of glue, than laid the tiles down, than more glue, than more tiles until we had the room done. I was up there a few minutes ago and it's all stuck down nice and tight !!

I'm pumped about the forklift as well !! It's not here or paid for yet but I was full time employed by the guy eons ago and we shook hands so it's a done deal. Once it's here I'll pay for it, or whatever I own on it at that moment. I'm installing some really nice WiFi/Camera stuff at their places and am hoping to "work it off" in labor :D

That sounds like a challenge to me :3gears:

Won't you feel silly when I post pictures of it buried to the seat WITH the rear wheels in the mud as well :lol_hitti

Just be sure to take good pics with all the loaders and tow tractors lifting and tugging it out of the meadow lol.
Upper room looks great, kiddos will love it.

Wow you guys really went all in on that project. At least you shouldn't have any problems with it for a while now.

Mine is sitting in the shop right now waiting on parts. Diesel fuel in the engine oil. :(

Does yours give a bit of a whine from the hydraulic pump at certain speeds?

Oh I think if it goes far enough into the meadow to need that much to pull it out it'll have sank to the bottom of the bog long before I could get a chain hooked to it :lol_hitti

This will rattle you a little...Saw a couple of tractors pulling discs in about 300 acres this weekend....Weather guessers say we may see 12F this weekend.
Lots of frosted little corns going on right now down by you. This time of year we expect a little nasty weather but I can't imagine what sort of mayhem these temps are causing down your way !!

I started out trying to adjust the clutch lol. We decided in short order that if things are going to come apart we should rebuild everything we could as long as it was already in pieces. It turned out well and is one of the more used little tractors around here.

Cylinder blow by or other stuff going on to put fuel in the oil ?? Any ideas why yet ??

Hyd pump whine is usually due to sucking air and cavitating a bit. Mine doesn't do it as far as I can tell. Changing the hyd filter is a good easy start. Well maybe not easy but the simplest. The hyd filter on the 884 is an element only and pretty much everything but a shot glass full of oil will end up running down your arm unless you drain it first :willy_nil

Time to put the new tires and tubes on the 884.

Lily decided she wanted to help. Can't say no to that !!

New tire is on !!

She rolled it over there and attempted to put it on the hub. She did alright for it weighing as much as she does :D

The upstairs room is ready to be used !! The girls didn't have school Thursday-Friday so we spent most of Thursday out here. They watched a few movies, sang songs, colored stuff, read books and helped in the shop a bit. It was a good time for all
50941119412_cebe8695d8_b.jpg

I hung a black blanket a few feet in front of the window so it didn't glare as much in the TV. They can still look outside and the glare is gone. Win win !!

A couple pieces of SS rod and a chunk of uni-strut and you've got yourself a decent pry bar holder.
50941120212_361cb254fc_b.jpg

I decided a small vacuum for upstairs wouldn't be a bad deal to have around so I snagged a sweet little Ryobi stick vac. So far so good. It works well.

When it's -21F the steers get a little frosty and a bit steamy.

Awesome work on the remote learning classroom! That will be a nice way to keep them engaged in both school and the shop.

That room for your kids in the shop seems perfect for them. That was a good bit of planning.
Just curious what the temperature inside the "beef barn" is when the outside temp is -21*. Does the body heat from all cows increase the temp much?

Thank you. I sure hope by being our here more they'll want to be in the shop more. They already wander out and come "help" so it's already working

Miss Lily seems to like helping with "dirty hands" sort of things and I love it !!

It's cold enough to freeze Whiskey out here. No joke. I left a plastic bottle of Fireball as well as some Crown in an old plastic Aquafina bottle outside last night and both were solid this morning :lol_hitti

All along it was planned to be their "living room" and I must say, I am very happy with how it turned out. Pops is going to put the trim in it and the shoffice this week so they'll both be "done" finally. The square baler will be making its' way into the shop soon so we can tear that apart and actually fix something in here !!

The steer barn stays a few degrees warmer than ambient temp but not too much. It feels way nicer though because there is very little wind.

The end of the propane tank by the shop is the coldest thing I could find around here this morning. It is facing North and there was a bit of a wind so it may have been chilled a bit past ambient temp which was around -24F. -32F !! That's -35C for the rest of the world. **** cold.
50944254506_7e3f72a6b7_b.jpg

I did some checking with the temp gun around the outside of the shop and this is the warmest spot I could find. I do not think there is much heat loss going on which makes me very happy. :)

There are talks about temps above freezing beginning Saturday and I'm ready for it. It's only been a week or so of below 0 but things are starting to freeze over and get dumb already. I've chipped these open a few times already. They have heaters in them but the steers play in the water and splash it all over and make a frozen mess :willy_nil
50943553148_95f3799750_b.jpg

The chicken barn side fans have quite the shitcicles forming under them :lol_hitti
50944353467_9f1d460a0c_b.jpg

I knocked over the closer to the barn ones on all 6 fans. There is a drain there and the moisture that collects in the fans needs to drain out so it doesn't run back in the barn. Shitcicle no more !!
50944353457_3aec496d25_b.jpg

Driving by it looks like the place is on fire with all the steam coming out. 82F air hitting -24F air makes a steamy show

I know you have to get outside and take care of the critters and your stuff, but OMG that looks cold from my chair. WOW!!

one of the members who lives north of you in Canada said when it gets around -50 they have to not only put chargers on their cars, but I think he mentioned nitrous instead of air in the tires. also you can't let any vehicles sit outside or tires go out of round and stay that way?

anyway I hope it warms up a bit for you cause it has for us.

take care and stay warm!!

I installed a "frost free" Mira-Fount double drinker (floating ball type) in my barn lot in 2012. It's the only good water source my little beef herd has in the winter. I haven't had one issue with it trying to freeze up, until this past Friday. The last day we had above freezing was 2/5. Several nights in the single digits above since then. I think the balls may be getting water-logged, because they don't fit up as tight as they should anymore. I had one ball trying to freeze tight in the hole, and even the valve trying to freeze up at 2°F Saturday morning.

Made a trip to the MFA coop, and bought the last compact, submersible 250W heater they had. I installed it under the center valve cover of the waterer, suspended from the stand tube, right below the valve. Just clears the float. Had to get creative with a small channel cut in the perimeter of the top cap, and a 100' extension cord carefully routed to the machine shed to power it. But hey, it was all the way up to 10°F when I was doing that!

And hallelujah, it worked! Completely clear yesterday morning at -2°F, and this morning at -3°F, and heavy snow. Supposedly -7°F in the morning, but back above freezing by Saturday. About damn time - our normal daily high for 2/15 is 45°F. Our high today was 0°F.

Fresh frozen beef!

My mom's friend is a nurse in Minneapolis. Said she was worried for her life walking from the parking lot to the hospital because of the temps. I don't like when it rains here at the ski resort, but at least it was +35°F
